VANISHED – IF HITLER HAD WON THE WAR

It always feels a bit strange, thinking of change as dawn of a new era.
Nevertheless, that is how I feel at this point in time, at the precipice of the
release of my new novel – VANISHED.

It took me seven months to write this book. I spent the first three months
knocking out the outline, and then the subsequent four months writing it. I
struggled with some chapters but breezed through the others. As with life, some
pages were easier to write than others, but that doesn’t make them any less
meaningful.

The idea for VANISHED came to me when I was standing kerbside over a cobblestone
street in Old Town Prague in October 2016. I saw first the words on the front
cover in my mind’s eye, and then heard the echo of a dialogue, which would
become the opening chapter of the book. Within seconds, the story began taking
shape in my head.

When I returned to London, I played around with the plot, and then – a month
later – went back to Prague on a research trip. I moved twice during the writing
of this novel – first from London to KL, then from KL to Melbourne. It is in
Melbourne where most of the work is done.

If you ask me to describe VANISHED in one sentence, I would say it is not just a
story about what Europe would look like today if Hitler had won the war, it is a
story about chance encounters.

A story about sliding doors moments.
