For fans of Randy Newman, Father John Misty and the Lemon Twigs, underdown's
latest offering combines the raucous rock 'n roll piano of Little Richard with
the introspective lyricism of Leonard Cohen, and the big band glamour of 70s
Elvis with the whimsical melodies of Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney. 

'Life in the Can' is a showstopper in underdown's live set, bringing the sound
and soul of the early 70s together with 50s flair, while also exploring the
torture of eternally living in one's own mind and memory.

ORIGINS & RELEASES

underdown formed in 2022, when Rhys moved to London. Playing his songs, with
just his voice and piano, around various London venues throughout 2023, he
gradually pieced together a band. They played their first show in December of
that year. 

Since then, underdown has been bringing a unique brand of piano-driven rock ’n
roll to small sweaty rooms around London. 

underdown's songs are meditations on memory, love and loss, blending the energy
and rawness of early rock with the poetic weight and sincerity of 70s singer
songwriters like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. 

underdown released debut single ‘Some Idea of Fun’ in September 2024, recorded
at Ctrl+P studio, London. ‘Phone a Friend (re-dial)’, recorded in a bedroom in
Hackney, followed in November. The song appears in another form on ‘Emynion’, an
EP recorded live to tape from his family home in August 2024.

The release of 'Life in the Can' will be accompanied by live performances at The
Social (Jan 24th) and Next Door Records, Hackney (February 9th).
