The State Bank of India (SBI) last week launched the RuPay National Common
Mobility Card (NCMC), a prepaid card, at the Global Fintech Fest 2023 for the
ease of commuters by ensuring seamless payments of fares for travelling on
metros, buses, ferries, and for parking facilities.

In a press release, SBI said people can pay for all these services in addition
to retail and e-commerce transactions through a single card.

Commenting on the card, SBI Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara said: “The card, powered
by RuPay and National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) technology, is set to
revolutionise the commuting experience and is aligned with the national vision
of “One Nation One Card”.

Earlier, RBL Bank had issued an NCMC card in association with Bengaluru Metro


HOW THE NCMC CARD WORKS?

The NCMC card, developed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, is
designed to be an interoperable transportation card. RuPay, in collaboration
with the ministry, aims to expand the card’s adoption nationwide for commuting
and retail transactions.

It is expected to create a cashless payment system for public transportation
across the country, such as metros, buses, cabs, etc. It also features a wallet
for contactless payments, and it can be issued in various forms—prepaid, debit,
and credit RuPay cards. Currently, 25 banks, including SBI, Punjab National
Bank, and Paytm Payments Bank, are part of the project.

It can be used as a regular debit card for ATM withdrawals and a wallet for
quick, contactless payments without additional authentication. The NCMC card is
designed to handle low-value payments for transit, smart cities, tolls, parking,
retail, etc.

Recharging the NCMC card is also hassle-free. One can recharge it online,
through mobile apps, or at authorised outlets. In the coming years, the NCMC
cards are expected to transform how people in India travel and transact,
ushering in a new era of convenience.
