Sexual politics plays an important role in Nineteen Eighty-Four. In the novel,
people's intimate relationships are strictly governed by the party's Junior
Anti-Sex League , by opposing sexual relations and instead encouraging
artificial insemination. Orwell was also openly against homosexuality , at a
time when such prejudice was common. That has nothing to do with his relations
with his homosexual friends.

Certainly, he had a negative attitude and a certain kind of anxiety, a
denigrating attitude towards homosexuality. That is definitely the case. I think
his writing reflects that quite fully. Orwell used the homophobic epithets
"nancy" and "pansy", notably in his expressions of contempt for what he called
the "pansy Left", and "nancy poets", i. Orwell's will requested that no
biography of him be written, and his widow, Sonia Brownell, repelled every
attempt by those who tried to persuade her to let them write about him. Various
recollections and interpretations were published in the s and '60s, but Sonia
saw the Collected Works [] as the record of his life.

She did appoint Malcolm Muggeridge as official biographer, but later biographers
have seen this as deliberate spoiling as Muggeridge eventually gave up the work.
Sonia Brownell then commissioned Bernard Crick , a professor of politics at the
University of London , to complete a biography and asked Orwell's friends to
co-operate. Crick concentrated on the facts of Orwell's life rather than his
character, and presented primarily a political perspective on Orwell's life and
work.

After Sonia Brownell's death, other works on Orwell were published in the s,
with being a particularly fruitful year.

This is one of those books where they came up with a title that they thought
would sell books, and didn't care that it doesn't really describe the book. This
is not a collection of profiles about "American Heroes"; it is a collection of
essays on American history some of these are profiles, some are not. I really
enjoyed some of these essays, the one on the Salem Witch trials and the profile
of Franklin, for example, but others were dull. This review has been hidden
because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. The prologue was really
worrisome to me.

I was afraid that the whole book would be like it, with him bouncing around from
topic to topic, mentioning one person and that leading to another with no
warning. He seems to assume that we know everything he's talking about already
which makes for a really confused reader. This is not for the faint of heart.
Whether it was explorers from the The prologue was really worrisome to me.

It was really interesting to learn that people placed such an importance on the
old writings, identifying or trying to identify new species of animals and
plants based on the old writers of Europe. They judged what America would be
like and what it should be based on old writings. Morgan said that Columbus
wasn't one of his heroes because of his treatment of the natives and that was
good to hear.

He said the Indians were more monastic with their way of life, not capturing
material things and helping neighbors, whereas the really "religious" groups who
claimed to be Christians were the exact opposite. They coveted material wealth
and treated Indians abominably. Indians had the right qualities without
"civilization" and Christianity and it upset the Europeans and Spanish. I was
shocked by how dangerous he portrayed libraries to be, how reading breeds
heresy. I've never thought of someone having dangerous ideas from reading
certain works.

But it does also encourage independent thought and spark change, so he ended the
chapter by saving he hoped libraries stayed dangerous for years to come. I was
so surprised that anthropologists found more variation in head shape, jaw
length, skin color, etc. The differences suggest they didn't come over from Asia
at the same time or from the same place.

Morgan said there's no such thing as "the" American Indian but they all did have
one thing in common: they refused to be absorbed into the European culture.
Indians were willing to listen to stories of the English God but they didn't
care about the rewards or punishments He meted out. The Cherokees felt that
everyone was free to think for themselves and that's why there was great
diversity of religion between them. They thought they had to civilize the
Indians before they would convert to Christianity, and thought college would do
that.

But when they got boys in college, they would skip classes to go in the hills.
The French excelled at marrying Indian women.

They were so eager for French husbands that they jilted the Indian men. The
English government offered 10 pounds and 50 acres town who married Indian women
or to Indian women who married Englishmen but few did. When Englishmen traveled
with Indians on trading, surveying, or hunting expeditions, they were offered
the prettiest maidens. When a man married a woman he seemed devoted to her and
her family and that way of life and didn't desire to be among the English. Even
though they adopted guns, cloth, and items into their way of life, they didn't
fully assimilate into white culture.

Indians thought white men who so discontented and uneasy with the world that it
was a wonder they didn't go out of it. The Indians didn't fight or use bad
language and name-calling with each other. They respected each other and didn't
have long conversations. Whites would get unnerved by their silence.

They would speak so low out of courtesy and Europeans had trouble hearing them,
and Europeans would speak so loudly that Indians would ask if they thought they
were deaf. They never raised their voice even when angry.

If any Indian violated their customs, the treatment was intended to shame them
into reform and not force them. Sarcasm seemed to be a good method, such as
commending a thief for their honesty or praising the courage of someone who ran
in battle. Europeans thought the biggest gift to give the Indians was
Christianity. They deemed the Indians lazy from the start, even though the
wealthy whites lived a life of pleasure themselves. Indians were careless about
wealth, unimpressed by it and actually wanting to avoid it.

He was a self-proclaimed Christian Deist, so he was not irreligious but rather
more secular than most common people of the day. Prosser was tried and executed

That is why the chapter immediately following makes so much sense--the role of
the Antifederalists, those who opposed the Constitution because of their fears

They valued the person and their abilities to hunt and be a warrior. A chief had
to give away all his possessions and if he was thought to be selfish he would
lose his authority. It's amazing that Robert Rogers wrote about the Indians that
their principles are that every man is free and independent and no one has the
right to take that away from them, 11 years before the Declaration of
Independence.

I was uncorked table when Morgan called Indians incorrigible, said "we" hated
them because they exemplified the Christian way of life better than us, and they
fit the values of the Declaration of Independence better than we do. He said
"we" don't want to be like them with a thousand petty republics, no authority to
make us behave, or to abandon our riches, and "we're" irritated by them who
exhibit our values better.

A. American Heroes is a collection of essays which span about six decades of
authorship; there are several themes from the '40s and 50's, one from as recent
as and a couple of previously unpublished pieces.

The notions of American "heroes" span pre-colonial times and discuss the travels
of Christopher Columbus and ends with modern pieces highlighting George
Washington and Ben Franklin. He includes several essays dealing with witchcraft
and others dispelling myths regarding the Puritans. Less interesting for me was
an essay detailing the differences in leadership between Timothy Dwight and his
predecessor, Ezra Stiles as presidents of Yale in Morgan's page biography of
William Penn primarily delves into Penn's religious beliefs and the basis of
Quakerism.

A point of contention I have with some other reviews of this book and those like
it essay collections of historical figures is the bemoaning of the "biographies"
being "too short" or not being "in depth. These essays provide a great deal of
information as well as providing the reader an idea if a topic or person would
be of more interest. As well, I likely would never have heard of either Giles
Corey or Mary Easty; a man and women executed during the witch trials of the mid
to late seventeenth century.

I couldn't possibly imagine how thick this book would be if everyone discussed
within its covers were given an exhaustive biography each! Not short on
information or research, this book contains essays which can be long winded or
just too lengthy for subject matter of little interest to me; as for the topics
of interest, the depth of the essays are great.


ON WAR, SERVICE AND HEROES

is now 93 years old, so I was surprised to see a new book from him on the
shelves. And of course, it turns out that the book is a collection of essays
written over the past many years. Most of the pieces have been previously
published.
