HAYLEY HEALEY

A desire to share the stories of extraordinary historical women led VIU
Education grad Haley Healey to become a published author in 2020. Four years
later, the high school counsellor by day, author by night has published five
non-fiction adult and children’s books highlighting boundary-pushing women as
well as a fiction novel featuring a strong female protagonist.

“Women are underrepresented in history books and history in general,” she
explains. “I was inspired to discover their accomplishments and resilience and
thought other people might be also.”

A GROWING GIFT FOR THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2023

Last June, the VIU Alumni Association, together with TD Insurance, partnered
with Tree Canada’s National Greening Program to plant and maintain 4,000 tree
seedlings in honour of our 2023 grads.

The trees were planted in the Williams Lake region. In 2017, a major forest fire
ravaged Williams Lake First Nation. In the aftermath of the fire, the land
experienced very little natural growth of vegetation, leaving the land
vulnerable to erosion. As the native tree species that Tree Canada planted
on-site grow, they will help stabilize the slopes, minimize erosion, sequester
carbon and provide a new habitat for wildlife that has been displaced from the
area.

Together, we are helping to remove carbon from the atmosphere and contributing
to a cleaner future in our province. We are proud to be the only BC
post-secondary institution to partner with Tree Canada to help build a cleaner
tomorrow.

To read more about 4,000 trees that were planted in the Williams Lake First
Nation community and the important work that Tree Canada does across the
country, please visit treecanada.ca and watch the video below.
