Want to hear from Ontario’s top forensic pathologist on his studies of a rare neurological disease in sub-Saharan Africa? Curious about hearing from an internationally-renowned neurologist and neuropathologist on his perspective of novel concepts of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's, and another expert on the progress of finding a cure for both? Or simply interested in free breakfast and lunch, and simultaneously learning how what you eat can be linked to Alzheimer’s through your gut bacteria? The Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology Student Union at the University of Toronto proudly presents the 12th installment of our annual conference series "Why Brain Matter Matters: Navigating Neurodegeneration." Join us this January as we take a deep dive into the innovative research conducted by renowned researchers on neurodegenerative diseases. This conference will shed light on the pathological and cellular underpinnings of disease etiology, and the progress from transitioning treatments from the bench to the bedside. Our aim is to inform and inspire our attendees by showcasing the most recent developments in this field and their potential to revolutionize our comprehension of these debilitating illnesses. We will be featuring our keynote speaker Dr. Gabor Kovacs, an internationally-renowned expert on the neuropathology of neurodegenerative diseases. We will also be featuring the research of our 6 general speakers: Dr. Michael Pollanen, Dr. Carmela Tartaglia, Dr. Karun Singh, Dr. Martin Ingelsson, Dr. Olga Rojas, and Dr. Jeehye Park. The conference is FREE to attend and will take place at the University of Toronto's St. George Campus and is open for anybody to attend. Coffee/tea and lunch will be served with no additional cost. Attendees will also have the opportunity to win several raffle prizes at the end of the conference! Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. You MUST REGISTER on Eventbrite in order to attend the event! If you have any other inquiries, please email us at lmpexecs@gmail.com. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I need a background in neuroscience to understand the talks? No, this event is open for people with any scientific background! Our speakers are encouraged to present their data in an accessible manner, and we will also be sending an email to all registrants explaining any concepts and techniques in simple language before the conference starts! Do I have to be here the whole day? No, please feel free to come late or leave early; we only ask that you check-in with our registration desk when you first arrive for logistical purposes.
