In this blog post, the authors argue that understanding the complex interactions between human activity and ecological processes is crucial to ensure the preservation of valuable Andean ecosystems in the future, and also emphasize the responsible use of global biodiversity databases. READ MORE See More News & Events #FEATUREDSCIENTIST: PABLO GONZALEZ-MOCTEZUMA PhD Candidate The University of British Columbia As a mathematician (Bs) for rural development (Masters), I have applied scientific principles to develop knowledge and tools for sustainable development. Products of this quest are: a) the first rainwater collection system adapted to the Mayan version of milpa (the prevalent traditional agroforestry system to grow corn, squash, beans and other associated species); b) customized digital tools to collect data that influence rural and environmental policy in Mexico; and c) a widespread capacity-building program in bio-digestion technology and agroecological restoration now used in three continents. After five years developing technologies for the improvement of small-scale agriculture, constant limitations on data availability led me to seek ways to mine the data myself. I started my PhD in Forestry at The University of British Columbia in 2019 in order to fill some of the key gaps that would leverage sustainable development in the small-farm sector. As a field technician I was convinced that small farms' contributions to society were underrepresented because we know very little about them, so I built the first maps of small farms in Mexico, which will allow us to study the landscapes managed by small farms and the amount/types of foods they produce. Furthermore, my conviction to promote agroforestry as a great technology for the twenty-first century led me to find a way to study 450,000 family agroforestry plots in Mexico that have been established in the last five years. I look forward to sharing this work with all of you at the #GLPOSM5 in my home state of Oaxaca in November! FIND OUT MORE Department of Geographical Sciences University of Maryland 2181 Samuel J.
