2:04pm Day 2 has been called off! This was always on the cards, once drizzle
chose to play hide and seek throughout the morning. The overnight rains did not
help either. No sun to dry any of the wetness underneath the sheets, too.
Tomorrow the weather forecast is quite better - don't rejoice, there is a bit of
rain around. Should not be as bad as today though. Fingers crossed. That's all
we have from the Kanpur Test today, do join us tomorrow nice and early. Goodbye
and take care.

Mahi: "My favorite memory is when Tamim scored 151. Bangladesh was in a good
position at 290-3, then collapsed... I thought Bangladesh could have put up a
tough fight if they had set a target around 200."

1:58pm The rain has reduced to a drizzle, and they played through this before
lunch yesterday, says Alagappan. And he has spotted the umpires walking out to
speak to the ground staff. It was a very short chat and they have gone back to
the change room

Neamat Ullah: "In 2010, just before the first Test of the series, Virender
Sehwag commented that Bangladesh's bowling attack was ordinary and that they
couldn't claim 20 wickets from their opponents. However, in that Test match in
Chittagong, Bangladesh responded by taking 18 wickets. Although they ultimately
lost the match, it was the first time we saw a spark of fight from them until
the very end in a Bangladesh-India Test. That remains my favorite memory of this
rivalry in the longer format."

1:45pm Rain is back, Alagappan pings. "Forecast was for heavier showers but they
haven't come. With the ground taking a lashing from yesterday and there being no
sunshine today, it's tough to clear the water off the covers, let alone the
outfield underneath."

Niraj Dhoot : "Favourite ind bangladesh test series memory has to be the sachin
kumble comical run out mixup. The entire dressing room was laughing." It was
ruled as a couple of runs and both batters actually survived that run-out

Huzefa: "The EPIC last wicket partnership of Sachin & Zak."

Sumon Charua: "Seeing BD playing red ball cricket for the first time in history
against India in Dhaka, and veteran Aminul Islam scoring the first ever test
century for his country. A dream come true!" Wow, ages ago!

1:35pm Hello again, people! No positive news from Green Park as of now. We
continue to wait. While we do so, why don't you share your memorable moments
from India-Bangladesh Test matches from the past? And have you checked out
today's #DailyCricQuiz yet?

Sahadat Ahmed B: "Mashrafe Bin Mortaza to Wasim Jaffer, first ball of the match,
pitches outside off, Jaffer shoulders his arm and timber! Favorite memory of
mine in a Bangladesh-India test."

Ashwin: "Ashwin Iyer Partnership in the 4th Innings 140 odd run chase thriller
in the 2nd test "

Vidyut : "my favourite memory is when Ashwin and Iyer finished a match which was
really nerve wracking. India almost bottled up an easy chase of 130 odd runs"

With that, Sudarshanan is back for another stint.

1.10pm In other news, Musheer Khan, the Mumbai allrounder and brother of India
player Sarfaraz Khan, has suffered neck injuries in a road accident on the
outskirts of Lucknow on Friday. He was on his way for the Irani Cup. Details
here.

1pm Here's an update from Alagappan: "Covers have been on all day. Only from 11
have the super soppers been in operation. That too there's only three of them.
The ground staff haven't bothered with removing any of the covers even in this
last hour or so when there was no rain. Outfield is still pretty wet. Puddles
still on top of the covers because theres been no sun to dry it off."

Aashish Calla: "Does it look likely that we will see some cricket today, later
in the day, for 30-35 overs? or does it seem too bleak? " --- Bleak at the
moment but let's hope for the best.

If you had to predict a result for this Kanpur Test, what would it be?
17.3K votes
Draw, no doubt
A win/loss result is on

12.40pm Elsewhere, Osman Samiuddin analyses where's offspin ten years since the
end of Saeed Ajmal and the doosra. Do give it a read.

Vivek: "Bithoor nearly 20 KM away from Kanpur, it's started raining again."

12.15pm More from Alagappan: "This is the brightest it's been all day in Kanpur.
Sun is not exactly out but it's definitely no longer apocalypse adjacent. The
key thing now is for no more rain."

12.10pm Welcome back. Here's an update from Alagappan: "There's not really a lot
of rain today. It's just drizzles coming through on and off. Steadily a few more
ground staff have made their way to survey the playing field. Earlier it was
only the three on the super soppers. The covers are still very much on though
and on top of them there are still puddles."

11:35am Aaaaand our joy, whatever little of it that was, is short-lived as the
drizzle has returned. This was while the super soppers, one of it borrowed from
the Ekana stadium, were at work. Also, lunch has been taken, which means the
opening session of the second day has been washed out.

11:11am Alagappan says there is a huge cheer around Green Park as the super
soppers make their way out. The rain has stopped for now.

Milton: "Kanpur ground used to be a very popular ground one time ! How long ago
the previous match held in this as I'm hardly hearing about this ground these
day ?" It played host to the previous Test in the state - vs New Zealand in
2021. White-ball games are generally now held at the newer Ekana stadium in
Lucknow

Shubham Srivast: "It has stopped raining here at my place in Lucknow as well. :)
The weather apps for both the places show that tha worst might be over."

V S Srinivasan: "Like impact substitute in T20, can there be impact substitute
Ground so that rain affected match is moved there !" One of the more innovative
suggestions this :D

10:55am It has started raining again in Kanpur.

Bunty: "In the meanwhile Sri Lanka is hammering New Zealand in Galle."

Arsal: "@Mohan Dutt… with a retractable roof, how high would it have to be?
would the catches count off the roof? or will that be a 6? "

Jaswant: "Just to confirm, is the delay because of a wet outfield or ongoing
rain?" There was overnight rain. And a drizzle around start time. Rain had
briefly stopped but the covers were in place since more was expected shortly.
And it is here now

Bharat : "@Abb. When Vaibhav said El nino, he need not have been entirely wrong.
As you pointed out, this year is la nina event. But the oscillation between the
2 extreme weather events El nino and La nina are generally termed as El
Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle."

1:14

WERE INDIA RIGHT IN GOING WITH AN UNCHANGED XI?

10:40am While we wait for the rain in Kanpur to relent, you can catch up on the
stuff from the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024. The snapshots of teams in
Group A could be a good starting point

Some of the stories are inspiring, really. Like South Africa's Tazmin Brits
headed to the competition weeks after her mother was diagnosed with breast
cancer. Or India's Deepti Sharma talking about what a World Cup win would mean
to the women in the country.

Some are happy stories. Like India's Shreyanka Patil out to achieve her dream.
And stories of perseverance. Like Alice Capsey lapping up every opportunity to
learn and becoming a vital cog of England's line-up.

Abb: "@Vaibhav, it's La nina, not El Nino, La nina brings more rain in India
while El Nino brings drought in India. And yes this year 2024 is La Nina year so
that's why we are looking more rain here."

Shubham Srivast: "I am from Lucknow. It's been raining here as well,
continuously since yesterday evening. Funnily enough, we didn't get this kind of
rains during peak monsoon."

10:20am It is understood that the teams have left the ground to go back to the
hotel. Logical prolly, no point sitting in the confines of the dressing room.

In the little play that was possible yesterday, we saw Jaiswal take a low catch
at gully. He also had taken a stunner in the same position in Chennai. Here's
Sanjay Manjrekar talking about it all:

1:43

DECODING YASHASVI JAISWAL'S SUPERB SLIP CATCH

Vaibhav: "@Mukunth rain at this time of the year in North is highly unusual. I
live in Ghaziabad, UP and there is constant rain which normally isnt the case
once Monsoon is over. I suspect this is the effect of climate change, El Nina
phenomenon to be more precise and there is nothing anyone can do about it
unfortunately"

Anish: "The BCCI can certainly consider the expertise of a meteorologist before
scheduling a five-day cricket Test match. Sure way to ensure as much playtime as
possible, making the match more competitive and enjoyable." Think it is also a
case of unseasonal rain. I was speaking to Daya Sagar, who is from that part of
the country, and he says generally monsoon ends in early September. But, as i
can attest to from the weather in Mumbai, the patterns are really changing. So
we are probably seeing delayed/extended seasons

Nanda: "Sudarshanan - what do you guys do during rain interruptions? " Just
mainly coordinate with reporters for updates really. Can assure you it is not an
interesting time, waiting for the next update or for the game to resume

10:10am Hello everyone. While watching the outfield fully blue, thanks to the
covers on them, Alagappan says this, "There was significant rain yesterday after
stumps was called and it continued overnight. That's probably the reason why
today has been delayed and it looks like a proper delay." As per him as well as
the weather apps, the worse forecast is for today. Tomorrow is slightly better
and I actually see some sun-and-cloud symbols in the forecast for Monday and
Tuesday.

Mohan Dutt: "Cricket is still living in 19th century when the world has moved to
21st. Grounds should have overhead coverage that games are not stopped because
of rain or bad light. Sponsors lose millions and spectators get a bad deal.
Grounds should be fully covered to avoid delays due to wet outfield." I think it
is a good idea to moot, stadiums having retractable roof. There will probably be
a need to slightly revise playing conditions - as to when you can use them, and
can some part of the game be held without the roof covered, when it doesn't rain
etc etc

Kiran Ramagiri: "Can someone confirm if a draw here impacts India's WTC final
chances significantly???" I think India will have to win five of their next
eight games, if this Test ends up in a draw

And while we wait for play to start, here's Sudarshanan to keep you company.

10am An update from Alagappan: "It's not raining right now but there is no work
being done. The covers are firmly in place.

Nick : "Any news from the middle? What are the chances of getting any play soon?
My Beecroft cricket team (in Sydney) are playing their first game of the season
and happen to be a fielder short. Should I go or stay to watch my Indian cricket
team? " --- I would say go but keep one eye on ESPNcricinfo.

rzk: "Not thinking about. It is better to play with result win or less for both
team. For BD it is opportunity to compete against the best in their backyard and
for IND it is good momentum & preparedness ahead of their long schedule. "

Amin from atlan: "What is the forecast for last 3 days of this test ? I remember
Mumbai Test between IND vs AUS produced results in last 3 days of the test
match. Sounds like an age had passed but still remember watching every single
ball of that match. " --- There is a forecast for rain tomorrow and day after.
Regarding the 2004 Mumbai Test, that was a very different pitch.

Sajid : "if we get a draw here, will be gets point for that? I mean that would
be awesome for BD given they are getting points from the table topper! " ---
Yes, both teams will get four points each in case it's a draw.

9.45am Tamim Iqbal was on air a little while ago and he didn't hold back in
praising Mushfiqur Rahim's work ethic and commitment to Test cricket. "Yes, you
can talk about me, you can talk about Shakib," he said, "but if you want to
idolise someone, I strongly feel it should be Mushfiqur."

prakhar garg: "draws because of more than 100 overs lost due to rain should
result in 6-6 points instead of 4-4 points " --- I will convert 100 overs into
the time available because teams can manipulate over rate.

Tarif Sherhan: "It's not a regular thing for Bangladesh to visit India. So
unfortunate that the game is being hampered for rain. Even if they lose, they
need to play there."

9.30am Usually, it's great being Jasprit Bumrah. But that wasn't the case
yesterday. He bowled three straight maidens to start his spell but also allowed
17 leaves in his nine overs. He was a little up and down. And yet, the genius
that he is, he still produced 22 false shots and beat the bat six times. Read
more about that in Alagappan Muthu's match piece here.

Mukunth : "With WTC points at stake, home games gain more significance with high
chances of getting the maximum points. Draws due to rains hamper the cause. We
play 2 games only against Bangladesh but 5 in Australia. BCCI should look to
avoid venues where rains are expected in the month."

9.15am While we wait for the rain to go away, here's a recap of what happened on
the first day. India won the toss and opted to bowl. It's not what they usually
do at home. The last time India opted to bowl first in a home Test was nine
years ago: against South Africa in Bengaluru in 2015. Coincidentally, that Test
was also marred by rain. Bangladesh, meanwhile, wanted to bat first. And not
just that, they picked three spinners while India stuck with only two. It shows
how differently the two teams read the conditions. However, rain and bad light
allowed only 35 overs in the whole day, in which Bangladesh scored 107 for 3.
You can read more about that here.

Nagraj Todur: "Hemant@ is it raining because of which start of play delayed or
is it because wet outfield? " --- It's raining and the whole ground under
covers.

Prateek: "Did Rohit chose to bowl only given rain forecast? Bat big enough in
1st inning and have only 3 innings to close the game?" --- That's an interesting
observation.

Pratheek Jain: "It's astonishing how the richest board on the planet doesn't
feel it needs to invest more on drainage and covers and better measures to start
play sooner after a rain break. I'm sure there must be something innovation that
can be looked into to make that possible. It's high time the BCCI starts
becoming proactive."

8.50am And it's official now. The start of the second day has been delayed
because of rain.

Ravi: "Rain Rain Go away…Come again another day….The cricket kiddos want to
play"

8.30am Greetings one and all, and I'm afraid we start the day with some bad
news. One hour to go for first ball and there's a light drizzle in Kanpur, it
just started for the day, Alagappan says. The team buses just have arrived at
the ground to wild fanfare, so there's hope of some play. Fingers crossed, we'll
bring more updates soon!

Ankit: "Is half an hour earlier start for lost overs in ICC playing conditions?
Dont remember it applying for tests in Eng" Unlikely that it's in the playing
conditions because, like you said, Tests only get extended in England in the
evening.

Ak: "shouldn't the play start early at 9 to get in the overs lost yesterday?"
Well, even a 9.30am start is doubtful.

2:52pm Unfortunately, official news trickling in that it is stumps on day one in
Kanpur. It hasn't stopped raining and I am not sure the light would have
improved later on. So all we have from the opening day of the second Test are 35
overs. In that, Shanto and Mominul showed their mettle. Akash Deep showed his
guile with the new ball while Ashwin showed his nous in setting Shanto up for a
dismissal. How we wish we had more of this. Not to be, as rain has the final say
for today. And that means play should start half an hour early on the second
day. Do join us then for all the live updates. Till then, take care and stay
safe aficionados!

Adam: "Is there more rain in the forecast in the coming days? Might not be
destined for a result in this one." There is a bit of rain in forecast tomorrow
too. Let's hope we get a good chunk of play, though

2:38pm The rain has not relented. If anything, the visuals have only got
gloomier. Think we are in for a longish wait

2:23pm There is a drizzle around and it has gotten slightly heavier, Daya says.
Pictures also look quite gloomy. Proper rain at the moment, it's "POURING MAD"
Al writes to me in all caps

Jalda Sandeep: "There is always talk of Cricket Ground Venues to be rotated so
that all get equal opportunity to host international cricket but what i feel is
unless the ground has proper equipment, ground staff, lights and facilities they
should not be awarded the match especially Tests.. as a gully cricketer myself
in local matches faced issues related to ground and mismanagement of wicket.. it
leaves sour taste for the players.. This being international cricket, that has
to be a norm to be followed.." Green Park has most of the things you have
mentioned, Sandeep. Just that it is raining and can't really control that. The
whole ground is under covers, like the grounds in Sri Lanka are done.

2:13pm There was rain in forecast around 2pm, and it has not yet arrived. But
covers are being brought on now.

Chandu: "Introduce "Umpire's call" for pitching just outside leg stump (say 1
cm), where review is not burnt :)" There is no projection element in the ball
pitching, so not sure an ump's call is needed in there

Raju M Iyer : "@ Natesh : Hope the concept of Impact Player is extended from T20
to Tests; then we can have Shami come in for Akash Deep in 2nd innings!"

And with that, Sudarshanan is back in the hot seat.

2.08pm It has become pretty dark out there, and the players are walking off. So
we have had nine overs after lunch, in which Bangladesh scored 33 runs and lost
the wicket of Shanto - Ashwin trapped him lbw.

34.6
•
Bumrah to Mominul, no run

full around off and leaving the batter. Mominul hangs his bat out and gets
beaten

34.5
•
Bumrah to Mominul, no run

length ball down the leg side. There might been a weather edge but it fell just
short of Pant

34.4
•
Bumrah to Mominul, no run

Bumrah bangs this one in but it hardly gets up. Mominul drops his hands to be
safe as the ball bounces once more before reaching Pant

34.3
4
Bumrah to Mominul, FOUR runs

full and angling across. Mominul goes for the drive but gets a thick outside
edge that flies over the slip cordon

34.2
•
Bumrah to Mominul, no run

length ball in the channel. Left alone

34.1
1
Bumrah to Mushfiqur, 1 run

length ball angling in. A little bit of extra bounce. Mushfiqur adjusts by
taking his bottom hands off and working it towards square leg

Bumrah is back. Four slips and a short leg

Natesh: "Shami in his earlier matches used to be ineffective in 1st innings and
take heaps of wickets in 2nd innings. Akashdeep is just the opposite, it seems
he is more effective in 1st innings.."

Akash Deep to Mominul, FOUR runs

33.5
•
Akash Deep to Mominul, no run

full on the pads. Mominul misses the flick and gets hit on the pads. A huge

gone for the review. And the replay show the ball pitched juuuust outside leg
stump. Which means India have burnt their second review

and gets beaten
