Don’t let her cancer snatch her away from me!” Manikam cries. She’s unable to control her tears as she looks at her 8-year-old daughter, Gowri, lying in hospital. “She’s in pain every day, yet she tries to put on a brave face and smile when she sees us. I can’t bear to think that without treatment, this might be the last time I see her smile.” Gowri has been diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A fatal form of blood cancer, Gowri’s disease has left her fighting for her life. It all began a few months ago, when Gowri’s health began to deteriorate all of a sudden. With constant fatigue and a low appetite, her skin began to grow pale. “I did everything I could to make sure she was resting, and even cooked all her favourite foods to get her to eat. Nothing worked.” Manikam recalls Soon, she also began to frequently cough up blood and developed wounds inside her mouth. Scared for her health, Gowri’s parents rushed her to the hospital. “The doctors tested her for tuberculosis, and the results came back negative. I was so relieved to hear the news, that it took me a few minutes before I realised that this meant my child was going through something far worse.” The only way to save her is for Gowri to undergo urgent intensive cancer therapy worth Rs 12 lakh ($ 16004.94). Unfortunately, this sum is far too much for her parents to afford. A simple housewife and labourer, Manikam and Sudharni have exhausted their savings on their child’s treatment so far. They’ve begged, borrowed and taken loans from almost everyone they know to be able to get this far. Now, they no longer have the funds to carry on. “I don’t have the heart to tell her that her disease can take her life. Gowri doesn’t deserve this suffering- she’s too young to even understand what is going on.” With each day that passes waiting for treatment, Gowri’s condition worsens. She’s constantly in pain and keeps begging her parents to take her back home. This family is in dire need of your help. Don’t let them lose their child at the hands of cancer.
