STRIKE a pose, August 12 is National Bowling Day! 🎳

There are records of student bowling clubs at Stevens as early as 1905. The
game’s popularity grew on campus, which led to class, fraternity and faculty
teams, as well as a varsity team that competed in intercollegiate matches. Games
took place off-campus until six bowling lanes with automatic pin-setting
machines were installed in the basement of the Howe Center in 1963. The
subterranean lanes were a hit with the campus community like the students seen
here!

Do robots dream of electric sheep? Can socialbots behave like a friend, offer
knowledge, help with problems, care and share personal experiences? That's what
team NAM (Never Alone With Me), a group of Stevens graduate students under the
advisement of assistant professor Jia Xu set out to learn in the Alexa Prize
SocialBot Grand Challenge 5 (SGC5) where they took second place. 🤖 🏆

Ahoy, Ducks! Throwback to the mid-1960s, when university administrators found an
adventurous solution to a housing challenge brought on by a growing student
body: a boat. Moored in the Hudson River near the foot of Eighth Street, the
S.S. Stevens housed approximately 150 upper-level students each academic year
from 1968 until 1975. 🚢

to campus by Daniel Yassa '24. On display now through Sept. 15!

Daniel's vision for this exhibit was born during his internship at BMW. Thanks
to his dedication, support from Phi Sigma Kappa, Stevens Hillel, Fraternity and
Sorority Life and the Office of Student Culture and Belonging, this exhibit is
now open at the S.C. Williams Library.

Today at @propelify 2023, Stevens alum Justin Trugman '20 M. Eng. '21 performed
a demo to fellow innovators and entrepreneurs about Software Testing AI — a
platform that enables developers to have confidence in their code through the
power of artificial intelligence.

LaunchPad@Stevens was present as well. This is a program that provides Stevens
students with the opportunity to work with real-world entrepreneurs to build new
technology-based businesses.

SIAI Director Professor Brendan Englot was on hand with a live robot demo, as
was Stevens' own second-place-winning Amazon SocialBot Challenge team led by
faculty advisor Jia Xu.

Meet Bobbi, a 10-year-old aspiring scientist who creates personal care products
with a twist — they solve problems using natural ingredients. Last month during
a special visit to campus, Bobbi and her family chatted with students and got an
insider's look at the STEM programs and leadership opportunities offered at
Stevens. But Bobbi’s journey to Stevens began when she took on a different
challenge: fighting invasive spotted lanternflies in her neighborhood. Her
determination made headlines and inspired support from the STEM community.

This semester-long seminar supports students in their transition to college

🤝 Duck Support Network
We've further prioritized student well-being with our Duck Support Network,
training dozens of volunteers in Mental Health First Aid.

🏘️ New Living-Learning Communities (LLCs)
Five new LLCs took flight this semester, connecting students with faculty and
staff around common themes. From the arts and leadership to culinary adventures,
these communities make campus life richer.
