NEW DELHI: Gold prices were trading flat in the domestic market on Monday,
bucking the firm global trend, after hovering near a three-week high in the
previous session.

Gold futures on MCX declined marginally 0.04 per cent or Rs 19 to Rs 48,575 per
10 grams. Silver futures eased 0.45 per cent or Rs 281 to Rs 61,856 per kg.

Ravi Singh, Vice President & Head of Research, ShareIndia said, "Due to rising
demand and spreading of Omicron, gold prices are going higher."

Physical gold demand in India showed a modest improvement last week as some
buyers rushed to stores anticipating a further rise in domestic prices, while
customers in other Asian hubs started bullion shopping for Christmas.

In the spot market, the highest purity gold was sold at Rs 48,791 per 10 grams
while silver was priced at Rs 61,811 per kg on Friday, according to the Indian
Bullion and Jewellers Association.

The spot price of gold has increased about Rs 1,250 in the last two weeks. The
yellow metal jumped about Rs 1,000 during the period under review.

Fears over the rapidly spreading Omicron coronavirus variant boosted the metal's
safe-haven appeal in global markets. The fall in dollar index and lower US bond
yields also boosted buying in gold post US FOMC meeting. Gold prices may keep
risk premiums high with growing Omicron worries and increased restrictions in
Europe.

Trading strategy
"We expect gold prices to trade sideways to up for the day with COMEX Spot gold
prices support at $1,780 and resistance at $1,815 per ounce. MCX Gold February
support lies at Rs 48,300 and resistance at Rs 48,900 per 10 gram," said Tapan
Patel, Senior Analyst (Commodities), HDFC Securities.

Global markets
Spot gold was up 0.2 per cent at $1,800.42 per ounce by 0113 GMT. U.S. gold
futures were down 0.2 per cent at $1,801.50.

Spot silver was up 0.1 per cent at $22.37 an ounce, platinum shed 0.2 per cent
to $928.23 and palladium dipped 1.8 per cent to $1,749.51.
