BES STUDENTS CELEBRATE WORLD READ ALOUD DAY BES STUDENTS CELEBRATE WORLD READ ALOUD DAY Submitted by Lindsey McCaw, BES K-5 Reading Specialist Students at BES recently celebrated World Read Aloud Day. They had the opportunity to participate in virtual read alouds with well-known authors at various points throughout the day. The celebration of reading continued at home by enjoying some of their favorite books with their families and decorating a book spine to help fill the BES bookshelf on display in the hallway. #BESBEARSLovetoRead #BESBEARProud OUR LIFELONG LEARNERS, A.K.A. TEACHERS, VISIT SPAATZ MUSEUM OUR LIFELONG LEARNERS, A.K.A. TEACHERS, VISIT SPAATZ MUSEUM As part of the district's professional learning day on Friday, February 16th, Mrs. Landis, Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning, and members of our educational team visited the General Carl Spaatz Museum right here in Boyertown. The museum has been part of MSW's walking tour field trip, and provides our teachers with a valuable learning experience right in our own backyard. #BEARTeachersAreAlwaysLearning GENERAL CARL SPAATZ NATIONAL USAAF MUSEUM The general was born in 1891, in Boyertown, Pa. In 1910, he was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy. He graduated June 12, 1914, and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry. It was sponsored by the Valley Forge Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers and featured teams from eight local schools, and a total of 67 individual contestants in grades sixth through eighth. We are proud to share that a team from Boyertown Middle School West finished second. Along with the team event, the competition also named the following individual winners: • First place — Luke Moyer, Boyertown Middle School West. • Fourth place — Declan Smith, Boyertown Middle School West. Both of the BASD individual winners will compete at a state-level MATHCOUNTS event in Harrisburg on March 22 and 23. Congratulations to all our MSW contestants! Best of luck to Luke and Declan!! #MSWBEARProud ONE SCHOOL, ONE BOOK AT WES ENDS WITH MORE THAN $2.5K FOR ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND ONE SCHOOL, ONE BOOK AT WES ENDS WITH MORE THAN $2.5K FOR ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND The selection for this year's One School, One Book events at WES was The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. For a full hour, he poured lemonade. The world is a thirsty place, he thought as he nearly emptied his fourth pitcher of the day. And I am the Lemonade King. Evan Treski is people-smart. He’s good at talking with people, even grownups. His younger sister Jessie, on the other hand, is math-smart—but not especially good at understanding people. She knows that feelings are her weakest subject. With just five days left of summer vacation, Evan and Jessie launch an all-out war to see who can sell the most lemonade before school starts. As the battleground heats up, there really is no telling who will win—and even more important, if their fight will ever end. ~ Amazon At WES, they turned the art of war into the art of caring as they came together to see how much money they could raise for Alex's Lemonade Stand - the non-profit organization the raises awareness and funds to fight pediatric cancer. The project closed with a school-wide assembly and a visit by Christie Fischer, a representative of the foundation. Not only was she there to share the story of Alex's Lemonade Stand, she was also there to accept a donation of more than $2.5K raised as part of their very own "Lemonade War." Brianna Speese, Hadley Ludwig, and Anthony Rossi proudly presented the check on behalf everyone at WES. #WESBEARSAreGenerous #WESBEARProud zoom_out_map zoom_out_map zoom_out_map BASH SENIORS TO BE PART OF UPCOMING RECOGNITION SHOWCASES BASH SENIORS TO BE PART OF UPCOMING RECOGNITION SHOWCASES zoom_out_map LAURA ADAMS BECOMES AN EAGLE SCOUT Congratulations to Laura Adams on becoming an Eagle Scout! Ryan successfully auditioned and made districts, re-auditioned and was selected to regions. Ryan is a percussionist and the amount of competition for his specific instrument is quite large and challenging. Making it to regions was a major accomplishment! The concert was a tremendous success and he had a great time! What is even better news, is that Ryan re-auditioned once again and has been selected to be a member of the PMEA All-State Wind Ensemble! That means Ryan is one of the top 20 percussionist in the entire state of Pennsylvania. This is an incredible accomplishment and one that I am so proud of him for. He has worked tremendously hard to get here and all of the educators who have helped him along the way from grade 4 to now could not be more proud! We couldn't agree more and are working to feature Ryan during an upcoming School Board Meeting as well! Stay tuned. BASH STUDENT IMPACT DAY 2024 - 2/22/-2024 BASH STUDENT IMPACT DAY 2024 - 2/22/-2024 Last Thursday, more than 70 students and staff members came together in the Cub Gym for Student IMPACT Day 2024. Hosted by the BASH Impact Club, the day included guided activities focused on relationship building and connection. Students and teachers built trust, met new people, and shared and received feedback in a safe environment focused on student leadership. "If you could teach a parrot one phrase, what would it be?" In pairs, participants were asked to share their responses in an effort to get to know one another and establish a connection. As a follow-up, the pairs were then asked to share their answers to another, more specific question. "When communication is successful at BASH, what makes it successful?" Everyone was connected by their involvement at BASH, but each was encouraged to share their personal perspectives on communication. At the end of the activity, students were encouraged to take the mic and share their partnership experience. Their responses regarding successful communication at BASH were positive and varied, including experiences through our English Language Learner program, morning TV news, the school counseling office, teacher connections, and the value of in-person learning. By the end of the day, the students created action plans to be shared with their building administrators - providing the opportunity for further reflection and consideration. Their shared voices and varied responses fostered deeper connections, trust, a collaborative learning environment, and appreciation for their shared experiences. A MESSAGE FROM STATE REPRESENTATIVE DONNA SCHEUREN A MESSAGE FROM STATE REPRESENTATIVE DONNA SCHEUREN SPEAKING AT THE BOYERTOWN YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT MEETING This week, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Boyertown Youth and Government meeting, hosted at the Boyertown YMCA. This is a club for high school students with an interest in government and politics. It has been hosted by the YMCA since 1946. During these meetings, participants can choose between three categories: Press, Senate, and the House. It works similarly to how we do things in Harrisburg, with those who participate in either the House or Senate working on legislation, while the press reports on what they pass. They also travel to the Capitol once a year, usually in March or April, to partake in a mock state government session. I can’t wait to see them again and show them how we do things here in Harrisburg! We discussed the challenges I face as a legislator, along with my 30-years in the private sector, my experience as a business owner, my 12-years of service on the Souderton Area School Board, and how it all contributes to my inherent value as a state representative. It was a real honor to speak to these passionate and intelligent students. It makes me hopeful for the future of our state when young people are so enthused about government and our legislative process. Keep up the good work and keep asking questions to learn about all sides of the issues! #BASDBEARSInYouth&Government The GIANT Company is excited to kick off its Feeding School Kids Campaign to support our district’s meal program. The campaign kicked off on January 1 and will run through the end of March. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised at our local GIANT store on Holly Road in Gilbertsville through ‘round up’ will benefit our school district. ‘Round up’ is Giant’s program of asking its customers if they want to round up their grocery bills for non-profit organizations. BASD has been the recipient of their winter program generosity in the past. Through their giving, we have offset the rising cost of food and provide nourishing meals to all students regardless of their ability to pay. Along with customer generosity, The GIANT Company will match up to $100,000 of dollars raised across their stores. Thank you for your ongoing generosity!
