According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), last year governments spent two thirds of their total spend on healthcare costs – and more money than they spent on education – subsidizing fossil fuels. The Positive Power Plan is the product of ambitious thinking from climate scientists, policy specialists and business leaders. It was originally put forward by Fortescue – a global integrated green technology, energy and metals company. The Positive Power Plan is how we'll keep people and our planet healthy, strengthen the economy and create jobs. It’s how we’ll wean ourselves off damaging fossil fuels and harness the unlimited power of renewable energy. It’s how we can all enjoy a future that’s a whole lot brighter. It’s time to make our voices heard. At COP28, the 28th session of the United Nations climate change conference, we are calling on leaders and policy makers to put our climate first. Adding your name to the Positive Power Plan is how you can tell governments and global leaders to adopt the recommendations so we can all live in a greener, healthier world. SO… WHAT DOES THE PLAN INCLUDE? Renewables not offsets Relying on carbon offsets is not how we’ll get to a greener future – renewables are. Carbon offsets just kick the can down the road and let big business off the hook. We must instead commit to reducing emissions through greater use of renewable energy. Cut fossil fuel subsidies to zero To increase green energy manufacturing we need to put a stop to the subsidies our governments pay to prop up the fossil fuel industry. Money that comes from your taxes. We want zero fossil fuel subsidies by the end of the decade. Price carbon properly Transparency about the true cost of fossil fuels and their impact matters – investors need to see why they should back green energy projects instead. A proper price on carbon is necessary. Build big green incentive schemes We need to make green energy projects more appealing by building incentive schemes relevant to each country, using frameworks like the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act as a guide. Back green energy with guarantees Greater reassurance for investors and business is essential, with government guarantees in place for all green energy projects; in particular, green electricity, green hydrogen and green ammonia, initially focused on Latin America and Africa where it’s most needed. Commit to green free trade Getting rid of old tariffs and barriers that make it harder to trade in green technologies, fuels and commodities will encourage more businesses to innovate, build and thrive. Protect future generations It’s vital we make sure the environmental laws we have in place are followed and acknowledge that by law, every future inhabitant of our planet has a right to be protected from climate change.
