1.Is age a factor in implant treatment?
To get dental implants, the patient has to be over 17-18 years. The procedure
requires a fully grown jaw, and that is why younger patients are not ideal for
dental implants. However, there is no upper limit to getting dental implants.
Even patients above 70 years receive them. If the jawbone is strong enough to
hold the implants in place, the procedure can certainly be done.
2.When can I brush and eat solid food after tooth extraction?
Wait to use a toothbrush to clean your teeth until 24 hours after surgery and
extraction of your tooth. While doing so, avoid brushing against and applying
pressure on any blood clots.
You can eat solid food 24 hours after surgery. There is no clinical reason to
avoid solid food beyond then. However, you must carefully choose your food items
as chewing extra crispy or hard food can cause pain at the spot of the extracted
tooth.
3.Should I eat and drink with gauze in my mouth?
No, you must not. Gauze is generally applied to the area where the tooth was
extracted. After the process, it keeps the bleeding in check. But, when you are
drinking water or eating food, you must remove the gauze first. Once you are
done, place a new piece of gauze at the site of the wound.
4.How do I determine if I am a candidate for dental implants?
A determination for dental implants is done based on the foundation of your
healthy gum and jawbone. If you have adequate bone that is strong enough to hold
the implant, you can opt for it. You have to ensure that you don’t suffer from
gum issues or periodontal disease either. A patient with good oral health is
often a candidate for dental implants.
1.What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?
Oral and maxillofacial surgery includes a broad range of procedures that are
performed for the reconstruction of the face. It is a facial trauma surgery that
is often done on the face, oral cavity, neck and head, jaw, and jawbones. This
type of surgery also includes facial cosmetic surgery. It is recommended for
patients suffering from disorders affecting the skeleton and facial complex. It
may also be performed if the patient has been in an accident that has affected
the facial structure.
2.When is it necessary to extract a wisdom tooth?
If the wisdom teeth are not coming out and remain trapped in the gum, they
should be surgically removed to reduce pain. The wisdom teeth can grow while
crowding the teeth beside them. This can cause pain and discomfort and requires
extraction. As wisdom teeth are located in the back of the mouth, they are
difficult to clean with a brush and are prone to cavities, decay, and pain. In
such instances, you need to have the wisdom teeth removed.
3.How are wisdom teeth extracted?
Firstly, the oral surgeon will inject local anesthesia into the gum to numb your
mouth. If you opt for general anesthesia, you will be put to sleep by inhaling
gas through a mask. The oral surgeon will create an incision to expose the tooth
and bone. If the bone blocks the access, then it will be removed. The oral
surgeon will remove the tooth whole or in parts if necessary. Next, the site
will be cleaned of debris. The procedure will end by stitching for healing, even
though it might not be needed in all cases.
4.When is the best time to extract wisdom teeth?
Most of the time, oral surgeons believe that the wisdom teeth need to be removed
at a younger age before the roots and bones around them become stronger and
fully formed. Complications may occur if removed later. If it is done at an
early age, the recovery is faster too.
