SPARTANBURG — South Carolina First Steps plans to host two events in Spartanburg that are a part of its statewide Countdown to Kindergarten initiative. Every summer, South Carolina First Steps hosts events in counties across the state that help children get ready for the school year. On Aug. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m., there is an event at the Children’s Museum of the Upstate in downtown Spartanburg. Families will be able to gather resources and supplies from local community partners. Children can practice real life kindergarten experiences and play in a mock classroom. Another event will take place at the Upstate Family Resource Center on Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children will receive school supplies and participate in learning activities. There will also be COVID-19 vaccines, dental screenings and eye screenings available on-site. “For a child to be ready for kindergarten, they need the verbal skills, fine motor skills and pre-math skills,” said Georgia Mjartan, executive director of South Carolina First Steps. “There are a lot of different components to what readiness looks like and it’s not just academic readiness.” Spartanburg News $1.3M SPARTANBURG LEAD PAINT REMOVAL EFFORT INCLUDES 17 HOMES * Asia Rollins arollins@postandcourier.com Spartanburg Politics REDESIGNING SPARTANBURG’S CENTER: COMMITTEE FORMED FOR PUBLIC PROCESS * By Chris Lavender clavender@postandcourier.com South Carolina First Steps is a state agency and nonprofit whose goal is to make sure children are prepared to start school. For the Countdown to Kindergarten initiative, the organization launched a website where families can find information on upcoming celebrations, search for their child’s school and find tips and resources related to school readiness. The site outlines 60 different developmental milestones that a rising kindergartner should have met. “We know that all children from birth to age five need different levels of support, and their families need different programs to help them get ready for success in school,” Mjartan said. Another component is a home visit program. The future teacher of the kindergartener will visit the home for five weeks in the summer, and the sixth visit takes place at the school. The nonprofit and agency works with families from before birth up until a child’s first day of kindergarten. South Carolina First Steps is in every county in the state. In some counties, families can sign up to have books delivered to their homes starting in the first month of their child’s life. Some counties focus on making sure children have access to high quality childcare. Local directors and teachers work with childcare center directors to make sure programs are educational for children. Other counties focus on parent education, home visits and parenting groups.
