A: First and foremost, I view it as “our” vision not “my” vision. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s success is built on the belief that when we take collective action, we can generate upland outcomes much larger than each of us can produce alone. Today, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever represent the largest community of upland habitat enthusiasts in North America. The organization’s history of success, coupled with the increasing relevance of grasslands, creates significant opportunities for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever to grow its impact. The current state of upland bird populations would be dire without Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s 40 years of habitat delivery. Yet, we know to overcome the loss of habitat, that has resulted in long-term upland bird population declines, the organization must develop and execute a robust science-based vision for the future. The pressures placed on upland habitat have never been greater, even though the benefits associated with grassland habitat are needed now more than ever. To be successful during increasingly challenging times, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are developing our 2030 vision for upland habitat and upland bird populations. Q: WHY WERE YOU MOTIVATED TO MAKE A PLANNED GIFT TO PHEASANTS FOREVER? A: My husband, Clyde, and I have benefited significantly from the uplands, so we wanted to ensure future generations have similar opportunities. Clyde has been hunting since he was eight years old. I was raised on a North Dakota ranch, so the outdoors has always been part of our lifestyle. We have a large extended family with lots of nieces and nephews, and we couldn’t imagine a world where they wouldn’t be able to experience an upland landscape filled with birds. Prior to me becoming President & CEO, we had been members for more than twenty years, and I had been a Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever volunteer for the past eight years. This allowed us to see first-hand the impact the organization is having on the landscape. Our experiences with Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever eventually led us to include a planned gift to the organization as part of our estate plan. We determined that planning for the future is important to the long-term success of the organization’s mission, so making a planned gift just made sense. Q: HOW CAN OTHERS HELP UPLAND BIRDS? A: We all have something to give, so it’s a matter of determining how best you can help. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever need passionate volunteers, donors, members, and conservation partners committed to creating an upland legacy for future generations, and we need resources (time, talent, and treasure) to deliver our mission. It will take all of us working together to create a bright future for upland birds. Thank you to all of those who have included Pheasants Forever in your will or estate plan. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to Pheasants Forever or other charities. A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create. You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost. You fund this type of trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also make additional gifts; each one also qualifies for a tax deduction. The trust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Pheasants Forever as a lump sum. You fund this trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. Each year the trust pays you or another named individual the same dollar amount you choose at the start. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Pheasants Forever as a lump sum. A beneficiary designation clearly identifies how specific assets will be distributed after your death. A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and Pheasants Forever where you agree to make a gift to Pheasants Forever and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life.
