WORLD SERIES RATINGS REMAIN HISTORICALLY LOW IN GAME 4

by Jon Lewis

Even without much in the way of competition Tuesday night, World Series ratings
remained mired in historically low territory.

Tuesday’s Rangers-Diamondbacks World Series Game 4 averaged a 4.5 rating and
8.48 million viewers on FOX, marking the least-watched Game 4 of the Fall
Classic on record. The previous low was 9.56 million for Dodgers-Rays in the
2020 “bubble.”

The Rangers’ comfortable win, in which they led 10-0 in the third inning,
delivered the fourth-smallest World Series audience on record — ahead of only
Games 2 and 3 of this year’s series (8.15 and 8.13 million respectively) and
Dodgers-Rays Game 3 in 2020 (8.34M). The first four games of this year’s World
Series rank among the five least-watched.

After opening with 9.17 million for the Rangers’ extra-inning, walk-off Game 1
win, viewership for the World Series has yet to return to the nine million mark.
Prior to this year, only one World Series game on record had ever averaged fewer
than nine million, the previously mentioned Dodgers-Rays Game 3.

Ratings decreased 32% and viewership 28% from last year’s Wednesday night
Astros-Phillies Game 4 (6.6, 11.81M). Diamondbacks-Rangers opened with a 20%
decline in viewership last Friday night and each subsequent game has posted a
steeper drop — 24, 27 and now 28 percent respectively.

As goes without saying in the current era of television, even the least-watched
World Series games on record are largely dominating the rest of television.
Outside of the NFL, no program that has aired opposite the World Series has
cracked even the six million viewer mark. Game 4 finished comfortably ahead of
the second-place show Tuesday night, NBC’s “The Voice” at 5.30 million.

Game 4 averaged a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49, a third-straight 1.1 in 18-34, and
a 2.2 in 25-54 — down 38, 44 and 35 percent respectively from last year (2.8,
1.9, 3.3).

Locally, the game averaged a 19.7 rating and 50 share in Dallas-Ft. Worth and a
12.7/36 in Phoenix. Game 3 the previous night had a 20.3/47 in Dallas and an
18.1/45 in Phoenix.

Maybe the fact there is a stupid pitch clock, when no one cares how long a
game is, can’t block plate, etc, and all the stupid, idiotic, moronic rules
this imbecile of a commissioner has implemented, are part of the reason.
    JUSTTTTTTTT maybe!

This will never happen but I think MLB should shorten the regular season
(with expanded playoffs, it’s too long and baseball should not extend to
November), play the World Series in warm weather location and rotate like
the NFL to create some publicity, and somehow reduce strikeouts to increase
    action on the field

Through four games it’s averaging around 8.5M which is shockingly low, but
not all hope is lost. The NBA’s lowest Finals viewership (outside the bubble
year) was an average of 9.3M in the nadir of 2007. But within three years,
they were averaging almost double that. These things have been cyclical
before, and hopefully for MLB they will be again.

Baseball did not learn a thing from NASCAR, Both alienated their base in
search of more fans and money.
I was a diehard Cardinals fan. I had been watching baseball since I was
about 9 years old. I put up with the strike, the steroids, and the DH in the
NL. As soon as they announced they were putting a clock on the field, they
lost a 45 year fan who probably won’t come back. Rob, I hope you got enough
millenials to watch to cover the time, energy, and money this fan put into
    the game.

Pitch clock is best thing MLB has done in years. If anything it will keep
fans interest, not turn them away.

I certainly agree. I can not understand fans who oppose the pitch clock.
There was nothing traditional – or fun – about 3 hour and 45-minute
        games.

Pitch clock is horrible. Can’t block plate, throw to first, mound
visits, have to throw to x number of batters, etc, etc. It is NOT
baseball any more. It is the Madden baseball league. IT IS RUINED!

The precipitous decline of baseball in my lifetime is incredible to behold.
I can recall a time when football and baseball were battling it out in the
60s and 70s for being America’s favorite. And even when the football
overtook the baseball as the #1 sport, most NFL fans still had baseball as a
close second, actively followed the league, supported their hometown team.
Then you had basketball and baseball battling it out for that #2 spot in the
90s and 00s. But baseball was still a titan in the sports world.

But shoot, even fifteen years ago, there were still a good handful of active
players that were household names. The postseason, especially the World
Series, was an event for all sports fans. And if your city was in it, even
the most ardent sport agnostics showed their support.

Nowadays, baseball is no longer the national pasttime. It’s no longer
national at all, frankly. It’s a regional sport at best; #2 in popularity in
a few major coastal cities, and a low-level following everywhere else. And
most self-proclaimed baseball fans today don’t care about the sport at all
if their local team isn’t in the postseason. And this will only continue as
the baby boomer generation (who still favor the sport on some degree well
below the NFL) dies off. Gen X seems to have all but abandoned the sport in
favor of football and basketball. Millennials never cared for it to begin
with and champion soccer and basketball (and football to a far lesser
degree) as their generation’s sports. Gen Z cares more about e-sports than
anything involving a ball; maybe soccer or basketball have some clout.

People thought the strike era were some lean years. Compared with today, may
well have the golden age of relevance. The bottom has only begun to fall
out. By the end of the decade, things are going to be rough with the
collapse of the RSN model and further decline of popularity.

In hindsight, 2020 would’ve been much worse if a big market team wasn’t
    there

I thought there wasn’t going to be a series with lower ratings than that,
I wonder if Manfred will do something about it.
