Barbara decided to open her own children’s home, one that treated the children like family, and Hogar de Niños Fátima was born. OUR PURPOSE OUR PURPOSE: Over the past sixteen years we have become a model for child protection. We strive to provide the same level of care for the children in our Home as we would want for our own sons and daughters. Every child who stays at Hogar de Niños Fátima is part of our family and receives housing, a balanced diet, clothing, access to education, health care, psychological support, legal assistance, and lots of love! Our goal Is to ensure that whenever the children leave our Home they are well-prepared for whatever future awaits them. OUR CHILDREN OUR CHILDREN Our Home can house up to 42 children. Newborns, toddlers, and children up to seven years old are placed in our care by order of a Family Court Judge. The children have often been removed from their families or caregivers for reasons of abuse, abandonment, or neglect. The child stays with us while a government agency investigates the child’s family in order to see if there is a family member who is able to receive the child. This process can take weeks, months, or in some cases years. Most children are reunified with a family member after several months in care. When no family is found, the child will be declared eligible for adoption and the National Adoption Agency begins the process of finding a suitable family. Currently only families in Guatemala or eligible to adopt Guatemalan children. SEE FIRSTHAND THE WORK WE DO EVERY DAY AND THE CHALLENGES WE FACE AS WE STRIVE TO GIVE OUR CHILDREN THE BEST POSSIBLE QUALITY OF LIFE OUR HOME * Ludoteca * Nursery * Bedrooms * Facilities LUDOTECA ACTIVITY CENTER Our activity center includes a stage, a computer area, a library, a rack of dress-up clothes, coloring books, and tables for doing homework. In the morning our teacher spends time with the pre-school age children playing with play-dough, drawing in coloring books, and playing games that teach fine motor skills. In the afternoon, the older children work on their homework and when they are finished, rush to the computer to play games. NURSERY NURSERY Our nursery is actually four separate rooms. We are able to provide care for 14 infants and toddlers in the nursery. There is always a nurse on duty with our smallest children. When they are not eating or sleeping, they are nearly always in the baby play area. A large room filled with bright colors, lots of toys, and a soft floor so that our babies can explore. BEDROOMS BEDROOMS The children’s rooms were beautifully decorated by volunteers. The boys love their airplanes and the girls have an enchanted forest full of butterflies and green trees. A childcare worker stays in the room with the children during the night so there is always someone on hand in case of an emergency or to comfort a homesick child. Our older children, those who have been a part of our Home for many years, have their own rooms to offer them a bit more privacy. FACILITIES OTHER AREAS We also have a kitchen, a laundry room, an office for the psychologist, and a small clinic to host weekly visits from the doctor. While we use all of the rooms, the kitchen and laundry room are certainly the most busy! Many of the children are undernourished when they arrive and we have a monthly menu prepared for us by a dietitian. Every day our cook prepares breakfast, two snacks, lunch, and dinner for the children. The laundry room has several washing machines that seem to spin more often than not, washing endless amounts of clothing for our fun-loving children who love to decorate themselves with dirt, black beans, and finger paint, SEND US A LOVELY MESSAGE It takes a village
