MEDAL OF FREEDOM WINNER OPAL LEE RECEIVES HONORARY DEGREE FROM SMU

Opal Lee, known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," received an honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters degree from Southern Methodist University on May 11, 2024. At
97 years old, she stood proudly in SMU's brilliant academic robes before
thousands of graduates and their families, becoming a Mustang and further
cementing her legacy.

 


SMU REMEMBERS WILLIAM “BILL” L. HUTCHISON ’54, ’55 FOR SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP TO
SMU

SMU mourns the loss of prominent leader in the oil and gas industry, longtime
University supporter and SMU Trustee Emeritus William “Bill” L. Hutchison ’54,
’55, who passed away on August 5, 2024, at the age of 92.

 


SMU WAIVES APPLICATION FEE FOR FIRST-YEAR AND TRANSFER STUDENTS

It will be easier to become a Mustang starting Aug. 1 as SMU celebrates joining
the Atlantic Coast Conference.

everything from Kick Off to Convocation! This extended orientation experience is
your ultimate in-person welcome to the Hilltop. Some students may arrive early
for pre-Stampede programs.
