Welcome to the webpage of Geelong Freedivers Inc!
We are an Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) affiliated Spearfishing and
Freediving club, formed in 2015. Club activities are based in Geelong, the
Bellarine Penninsula, and the Surf Coast.
MONTHLY CLUB MEETINGS
We hold a monthly club meeting on the second Wednesday of each month at the Sir
Charles Hotham hotel in Geelong (usually in the back function room). Meeting
kicks off at 6:30pm.
Club meetings are a good way to meet and socialise with fellow club members, get
information for and discuss up coming club events, and keep up to date with club
and general spearfishing news.
Meetings are open to members and non-members alike, so even if you aren’t in the
club, feel free to drop in and say hello.
COMPETITIONS
CLUB SPEARFISHING CHAMPIONSHIP
Geelong Freedivers Inc. offers a variety of competition options. We hold a year
long spearfishing challenge for members called the “Club Spearfishing
Championship“. This comp allows members to enter fish caught over the course of
their normal diving to be scored against the fish captured by other club
members.
SURF COAST CUP
We also have a series of single day spearfishing competitions collectively
called the “Surf Coast Cup“. This competition format is set out in the calendar
and may include “shore based”, “Boat based”, and “Pole spear only” comps
combined with some of the AUF state-wide events such as the state titles.
NON-SPEARFISHING COMPETITIONS
We also run a series of Underwater Photofishing competitions for members. These
are like our spearfishing comps, with points awarded for species identified as
‘caught’ on camera. This activity takes members into marine sanctuaries.
POOL TRAINING
Geelong Freedivers Inc. holds a weekly pool training session at Geelong Aquatic
Centre. Pool training is one of the more frequent club activities, and allows
members to work on their dive form and technique under the guidance of our club
coaches, or as a way to work on their own diving fitness.
SOCIAL DIVES
We hold a members social dive on the first Sunday of each month. These dives are
a good way to meet fellow club members, find dive buddies, test out new gear,
or seek advice from our club coaches in our “Spearo Clinics’. Best of all, it’s
a great excuse to get in the water!
GOURMET BARBECUES BY THE BEACH
After our in-water club events, we often hold a barbecue! Even if you don’t
dive, members (and non members!) are welcome to come on down post-event for a
bite to eat and listen to the debrief on the days dive.
CLUB CAMPING TRIPS
We occasionally hold a club trips to various locations in and out of the state.
These events are typically over long weekends based on member interest.
