TEXAS ROADHOUSE ROADKILL

Texas Roadhouse has a wide variety of meat dishes to choose from. One of my
favorites is the Roadkill. Sure, it doesn’t seem appetizing, but wait until you
try it. 

The combination is pretty simple. It’s burger patties, onions, mushrooms, and
cheese.

But man, it just hits all the right notes. It’s tender and juicy, earthy, rich,
and cheesy. It’s everything you can ever ask for in comfort food!

With this easy-peasy copycat recipe, there’s no need to head to Texas Roadhouse
the next time a craving strikes.



With basic ingredients and a few simple steps, you can enjoy the goodness of
Texas Roadhouse Roadkill in the comfort of your home.


INGREDIENTS 

 * Ground Beef. Be sure it’s not too fatty! The best burger patties have the
   perfect combo of lean and fatty. Use ground chuck steak with an 80:20 or
   85:15 meat to fat ratio.
 * Egg. To bind the patties. 
 * Lawry’s Seasoning. For spice. If you don’t have it on hand, season the beef
   with sugar, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder, and your choice of spices.
 * Salt And Pepper. To taste.
 * Mushrooms. For a chewy, earthy contrast to the savory beef. 
 * Onion. For texture, flavor, and aroma. 
 * Cheese. Burger patties just taste a thousand times better with cheese.


TIPS FOR THE BEST DISH

 * Preheat the pan to high heat before cooking the patties, or else, they’ll
   stick to the pan. 
 * Do not overwork the patties. Do not mix them too much, do not flatten them
   with a spatula, and do not flip them more than once. Doing so will yield dry
   burgers.
 * Give the patties 5 minutes of resting period post-baking. Let the meat
   reabsorb the juices it’s released in the oven.
 * The best mushrooms for this dish? I say cremini, white button, shiitake,
   portobello, or wild mushrooms. 
 * Whichever mushrooms you choose, be sure they’re fresh and that you clean them
   well. All you’ll need is to rub them with a damp paper towel to get rid of
   dirt. Do not soak the mushrooms in water. They’ll absorb it, stopping them
   from browning.  
 * Store leftovers in an air-tight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
 * You can also freeze leftovers in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
   Thaw them in the fridge overnight and reheat them in the microwave until
   warmed through.




VARIATIONS FOR THE PATTIES

This copycat recipe for Texas Roadhouse Roadkill is pretty on point, but there
are tons of tweaks you can try for more flavor. Here are some suggestions:


 * Burger patties are usually made with ground beef, but you can also use ground
   pork, turkey, lamb, or chicken. 
 * Sprinkle the patties with crushed pepper flakes, cayenne, or paprika for a
   nice kick.
 * Add more cheese, because there’s no such thing as too much cheese! The recipe
   calls for 1-2 slices of mozzarella or Swiss cheese per patty, but feel to top
   it with more. Cheddar, Monterey Jack, blue cheese, gouda – take your pick! 
 * More vegetables. For flavor, crunch, and a healthier dish, add shredded
   zucchini and/or carrots to the patties. Trust me, it’s so good, the kids
   won’t mind. 
 * Bacon. Let’s be honest, everything tastes better with bacon. Whether it’s
   strips or crumbled, you can’t go wrong. Fry the bacon until golden crisp for
   the best texture contrast. 


WHAT TO SERVE WITH THIS DISH

As show-stopping as it is, this burger casserole shines even more when paired
with a side dish.



Transform this delectable dish into a complete meal by serving it with these
sides!

 * Texas Roadhouse Roadkill is a bit lacking in carbs. The solution? Potatoes!
   Mashed potatoes, baked, fried, scalloped – any spud-based dish pairs
   wonderfully with burgers.
 * Want more starchy sides? Serve the casserole with white or brown rice. Seems
   simple, but I bet you’ll ask for seconds.
 * For a classic hamburger, serve the patties in buns.
 * Here’s a classic combo: hamburger and pasta. Now, this is something the kids
   will definitely be on board with! Whether it’s spaghetti, carbonara, or mac
   and cheese, they won’t say no.
 * For a lighter option, go for roasted veggies. Brussels sprouts, carrots,
   broccoli, cauliflower – take your pick! The simplicity of the side dish
   perfectly contrasts the richness of the casserole.
 * Coleslaw goes well with burgers as well. The contrast between hot and cold is
   absolutely amazing!
 * I’ve got another classic for ya: onion rings! Mildly sweet and ultra-crunchy,

INGREDIENTS

 * 2 pounds ground beef

 * 1 egg, beaten

 * A dash of Lawry’s seasoning

 * Salt and pepper to taste

 * 1 pack of sliced mushrooms

 * 1 medium onion, sliced

 * 1 pack of Mozzarella or Swiss cheese slices


INSTRUCTIONS

 * Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
 * In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, egg, Lawry’s seasoning,
   salt, and pepper. Be careful not to over-work the beef. Shape it into
   hamburger patties. Press your thumb into the center of each patty to form a
   depression. Chill for 10 minutes.
 * Meanwhile, cook the mushrooms and onions over medium heat until the onions
   are translucent, about 5 minutes. Remove them from the heat.
 * Cook the burger patties in a pan over heat on each side until browned, about
   2 minutes. (They don’t need to be cooked through since they will cook further
   in the oven.)
 * Transfer the patties into a 9×13-inch baking dish and top with the sauteed
   mushrooms and onions.
 * Top each patty with 1-2 slices of cheese. Bake for 10 minutes or until the
   cheese is melted. Enjoy!
