A Kansas man who was accused of strangling his pregnant girlfriend after
scouring the internet for information on choke holds has killed himself in jail,
according to a report and officials.



Alexander Lewis, 22, died on Thursday morning around 5:30 a.m., the Wichita
Eagle reported , citing Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Nathan Gibbs. The Sedgwick
County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release posted to Facebook that day that
an inmate died in custody at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.

“Preliminary reports indicate the death was a result of self-inflicted
asphyxiation,” the news release said.

Lewis was arrested on August 26 on a first-degree murder charge, as The
Messenger previously reported . That day, Lewis allegedly killed his 19-year-old
girlfriend, Zaiylah Bronson, who was about 16 weeks pregnant and attended school
at Wichita State University.



When deputies arrived, they found Bronson’s body stuffed in the trunk of Lewis’
car just outside his apartment. Emergency personnel began to perform life-saving
measures but pronounced her dead at the scene shortly after.

Investigators uncovered a questionable internet search history in the hours
before Bronson died.

The day before her death, Lewis searched for information on the internet on
“stun guns, lethal weapons, and ‘weapons that can kill,’” according to a
probable cause affidavit. And the next morning, his cellphone browsing history
shows that Lewis conducted searches on a “choke hold,” abortion, “snapping
necks,” and murder, the affidavit reportedly says.

The Wichita Police Department classified the incident as an act of domestic
violence.
