FOUR GENERATIONS OF A BRITISH BANKER’S FAMILY WERE WIPED OUT WHEN 14 PEOPLE DIED
IN A PLANE CRASH AT AN EXCLUSIVE COASTAL RESORT.

TRAGEDY: Roger Wright, his wife Lucila Lins and eight family members died
instantly in the crash

Roger Ian Wright, a leading Brazilian financier, his socialite wife Lucila Lins,
and eight family members died instantly when their twin-engine aircraft ditched
just short of the runway.

The plane’s pilot, co-pilot and a family nanny also died in the tragedy late on
Friday at Terravista Airport in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

Local reports last night said the plane was overloaded when it came down.

Lucila and Wright, 56, who once played hosts to Prince Andrew during an official
visit to Brazil, were travelling to their holiday home at the plush Terravista
golf resort in the town of Trancoso in his personal plane, Brazilian officials
said.

With them were Wright’s two children from his first marriage, Veronica and
Philip, their spouses Rodrigo and Heloisa, his three grandchildren Victoria,
Gabriel and six-month-old son Francisco, and his aunt Vera Lucia Mercio.



Lucila’s granddaughter Nina Pinheiro was also on the flight with Francisco’s
nanny, Rosangela Pereira Barbosa, the plane’s pilot Jorge Lang Filho and his
co-pilot Nelson Caminha Affonseca.

Medical examiner Antonio Carlos Batista Brito said their “completely charred
bodies” had been sent to the state capital of Salvador for identity by DNA tests
or dental records.



The King Air B350 plane took off from Sao Paulo at 6.31pm and crashed 150 metres
short of the Terrvista runway at 9.13pm.

Moments before, the pilot reported that “visual and landing conditions were
normal.”

Witnesses said a strong gust of wind appeared to have buffeted the plane as it
approached the runway.

By a tragic coincidence, Wright’s first wife Barbara also died in a plane crash
when a TAM Airlines jet with 99 passengers crashed moments after taking off from
Sao Paulo airport in 1996.

Wright was a TAM director. British-born and a Brazilian citizen, he sat on the
boards of several banks including Credit Suisse and recently set up his own fund
management firm Arsenal Investimientos.

He was one of Brazil’s leading art collectors. Lins, from a line of wealthy
Brazilians, was often featured in society columns.

The couple’s marriage in 2004 was shrouded in secrecy and attracted media
speculation over which Caribbean paradise isle it would be held on.
