WELCOME

Hello, I am Gene Canning…

Welcome to my website. You will see a variety of painting subjects and styles.
I find it hard to restrict myself to only one theme and so… for better or
worse... I don’t.

My favourite medium is oil, but I also work in acrylic and  graphite (pencil). I
love how oil paint feels as it moves under my brush, the flexibility to blend
and work through ideas without the worry of the paint drying while I work.

As you tour my site, please stop and read about my project on Tom Thomson;
celebrating his time in Algonquin Park from 1912 to his death in 1917.

“On the Trail of Tom Thomson, 100 Years Later” was my way of exploring his art
and his way of working. It was completed in an effort to recognize and
appreciate Tom Thomson as an outdoorsman. Paddling and painting his way into
history all those years ago.  As author David Wilcox said to me,” …it will end
being more of a journey about you, than about Thomson” and he how right he was!
It changed me forever as an artist. I’d like to think for the better. One way,
or the other, that project and the time I spent in Algonquin has had a major
impact me as well as on my art.

Amongst the wide variety of subjects I love to paint, you’ll find a few
portraits, African wildlife, North American wildlife, dogs and canoes as well as
landscapes. Although the subjects vary, they all reflect my love of the
outdoors.

I love travelling to the places I want to paint. It allows me to study the
environment; the feel of the place. It helps me to better  interpret the world
onto all my canvases.

Enjoy the journey with me.

I’m excited to note that I just added one of Journeys of an Artist shows to
Youtube. It is episode 13. Gives a summary of all the season. You will find it
on my PBS tab. Enjoy!
