All of these businesses benefit from the region's deep and diverse talent pool, with local universities like Georgia Tech, Emory, and HBCUs Morehouse and Spelman College producing thousands of annual graduates. DENVER WORK.LIVE.PLAY: THE 411 An outdoor lover's paradise: quick access to skiing, mountain biking, climbing, hiking, camping, fishing, and more in the Rockies. Denver is also one of the sunniest cities in America, with over 300 sunny days a year! Denver is the capital of Colorado, and the state's dedication to entrepreneurs is clear: Governor Jared Polis was a co-founder of Techstars (globally-renowned accelerator), and Attorney General Phil Weiser founded Silicon Flatirons (CU Boulder’s center for digital/entrepreneurship law). Startup Success/Wins: Denver Startup Week is one of the nation's most vibrant gatherings of entrepreneurs and investors, attracting thousands of visitors from around the country for the annual fall event. Local startups like Ibotta and Guild Education help lead the community with hundreds of millions in venture backing, and are joined by other successes like Halp, which was recently acquired by Atlassian, and Ping, which IPO’d. Across the state, Colorado startups received more than $2 billion in venture capital funding in both 2018 and 2019. DETROIT, MI WORK. LIVE. PLAY: THE 411 Detroit is one of the hottest up-and-coming food destinations in the country! Detroit is a powerhouse music city. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, and the rest of the Motown lineup started here. Some also cite the city as the originators of house techno music, and renowned hip-hop artists like Eminem and Danny Brown call the city home. Startup Success/Wins: Revolution-backed companies like StockX and Shinola have helped lead the latest generation of Detroit startups. Consumers around the world know and love these brands, both of which lean into their Detroit roots. As the birthplace of the global auto industry, Detroit is now positioning itself as a leader in the development of autonomous vehicles with local leaders like Ford and Detroit deploying testing fleets alongside other startups. One of the city’s most famous “locals”, Quicken Loans founder & Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert has invested at least $2.5 billion over the years to rehabilitate buildings in the heart of the city. PHOENIX, AZ WORK.LIVE.PLAY: THE 411 Phoenix is known as a premier golf destination, and with the sport's meteoric revival in 2020, it's a surefire way to connect with your community in a fun, safe, and socially distant way. If you'd rather watch than play, the annual Waste Management Open has the highest attendance of any event on the PGA tour: more than 500,000 people over four days! If sports or golf aren't your thing, Phoenix is a well-known destination for arts, music, and architecture. There are numerous museums and concert venues, as well as 11+ Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the greater Phoenix area. Startup Success/Wins: GoDaddy, the iconic name in domain registration, was founded in the Phoenix area in 1997, and now has more than 7,000 employees worldwide. Since then, high-flying startups like Tuft & Needle and WebPT have added to the city’s startup bonafides and Arizona State University’s outsized commitment to entrepreneurship has helped foster a hotbed of locally-grown innovations. SEED SPOT, based in Phoenix, is ranked as one of the top accelerators in the world, and was named one of the Top 3 Social Impact Incubators in the United States. The region is also home to CO+HOOTS, Phoenix’s first co-working space, which has a 10+ year track record of supporting startups with a focus on inclusivity. AUSTIN, TX Atlanta, GA WORK.LIVE.PLAY: THE 411 Austin is an outdoor lover's paradise! There are many nearby lakes to explore, state parks to hike, and swimming holes to discover just outside the city. The city is known as one of the live music capitals of the world. SXSW and Austin City Limits bring hundreds of musical acts to the city each year, with plenty more concerts on the calendar across the many venues in Austin. Many major tech companies have offices in Austin, including Facebook and Google. STARTUP SCENE HEADLINES Dating app Bumble is headquartered in Austin, and went public earlier this year. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd became the youngest-ever female founder to take her company public. Revolution Growth-backed BigCommerce also recently went public in one of the most successful public offerings of 2020. The city’s tech scene has also been in the headlines recently for attracting some major Silicon Valley companies - such as Tesla and Oracle - to relocate to Texas. Most startup roads in Austin lead to Josh Baer’s Capital Factory, which has been the most active investor in Texas since 2010 according to Pitchbook. That is how Rise of the Rest met Austin-based portfolio company ZenBusiness, which recently closed a $50M+ Series B round. BALTIMORE, MD Atlanta, GA WORK.LIVE.PLAY: THE 411 If you're looking for crab-cakes and football though, you came to the right place. Few cities have more pride in their NFL team than Baltimore, and people come from all over the country to the Chesapeake Bay to get a taste of the unique cuisine. Techstars just announced the Techstars Equitech Accelerator to build and nurture an innovation economy in Baltimore where “all belong”. Equitech companies include those grounded in the values of diversity, those led by underestimated founders, and those developing technologies that increase access and equity in society. All are welcome in Baltimore. STARTUP SCENE HEADLINES Catalyte, which builds technology to identify and train the workforce of the future, has scaled to more than 300 employees and raised over $50M from VCs like Rise of the Rest, MaC Venture Capital, Camden Partners, the founder of Tinder, and others. Whether you love staring up at the skyscrapers, or are looking for a home, Chicago is an architecture-lover's dream city. The history of the city is reflected in the architecture of different areas, whether you work in a Mies van der Rohe office in the Loop, or live in a Prairie School home in Oak Park. As the third largest city in the country, there are tons of job opportunities for workers in all sectors, including technology. Big tech companies like Google, LinkedIn, and Salesforce all have offices there, alongside the hundreds of startups supported by organizations like 1871, one of the largest co-working communities in the country, which is located in the city’s historic Merchandise Mart. STARTUP SCENE HEADLINES Some of the country's most successful startups have started and scaled in Chicago, including Groupon. Founder Eric Lefkosky (a Rise of the Rest LP) has continued to build and invest in Chicago, launching VC firm Lightbank and Revolution Growth-backed Tempus Labs, a healthcare data analytics platform. The winner of the 2020 Rise of the Rest Virtual Tour: Equity Edition is based in Chicago: Rheaply. Led by Northwestern alum Dr. Garry Cooper, Rheaply is building a more sustainable future by helping enterprises manage and monetize their underused assets. DALLAS, TX Atlanta, GA WORK.LIVE.PLAY: THE 411 Three of the top ten companies in the Fortune 500 are headquartered in the Dallas-Fort Worth region: Exxon Mobil (3), McKesson (8), and AT&T (9). 23 other local companies are on the list including American and Southwest Airlines and Texas Instruments. Say Yes to Dallas, a campaign from the Dallas Regional Chamber, has a website that busts common myths about the region.
