Kamiak High School
Class of 2023

I’M A COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENT WITH A PASSION FOR DRUMMING, MATHEMATICS, AND
ENGINEERING.

Rhythms and numbers are my specialty. Whether it's fractions or time signatures,
calculus or nine-stroke rolls, or book reports or book reports (get it?) I'll be
there. I look forward to sharing my story; full of dedication, challenges, and
clean beats.

COMMITTED TO THE CRAFT OF PERCUSSION

Jazz band, show band, concert band, winter percussion, rock band camps, private
lessons, etc. If it involves drums, I'm all in.

• DRUMSET - JAZZ ONE

• JAZZ COMBO LEADER

SHOW BAND 2022

• CENTER SNARE

• PERCUSSION CAPTAIN

• OUTSTANDING BATTERY PERFORMER AWARD

KAMIAK - JUNIOR YEAR

JAZZ BAND 2021-22

WINTER PERCUSSION 2022

"Portraits" | NWAPA Open Class Finals: 89.45 Score | Second Place Out of Four
Teams

• CENTER SNARE

• BATTERY CAPTAIN

• OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AWARD

The beginning of our winter season was less than ideal. We had the fewest
members in years, and only three members were seniors. With very little
experience, we managed to become one of Kamiak's most successful winter
percussion groups ever, achieving a high score, 89.45, in Open Class. Our group
may not have been as experienced, but we had a strong bond and a second family
by the end of the season. This was my first year as battery section leader in
high school, and I couldn't have been more proud of how far we progressed as a
team.

SHOW BAND 2021

"Off the Wall" | NWAPA AAAA Finals: 89.9 Score | Second Place Out of Twelve
Teams

• SNARE

• OUTSTANDING PERCUSSION PERFORMER AWARD

This year was amazing. The battery played very difficult music and rose to the
occasion, gaining Best Percussion recognition at one of our competitions. I even
had a solo, a total of eleven bars, and was one of the first high schoolers in
the Northwest to have a microphone amplify a snare solo in a competition. The
battery section was also recognized by the band as the most crucial section for
the season, awarding us with what we call the "Box 5" Award.

KAMIAK - SOPHOMORE YEAR

JAZZ BAND 2020-2021

• DRUMSET - JAZZ TWO

KAMIAK - FRESHMAN YEAR

WINTER PERCUSSION 2020

"About Us" | NWAPA Open Class Competition: 81.4 Score (performed only once due
to COVID) | Second Place

• SNARE

After doing three years of winter percussion at Harbour Pointe Middle School,
two of which were on snare, I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong. It was
so much more fun than I thought it would be, and it also required much more
dedication and hard work. For my first winter season, I couldn't have asked for
a better percussion section and positive atmosphere, and we certainly exceeded
all expectations by the end of the season. I had a solo, a metric decelerando,
and I have much better control from hand-to-hand because of it.

SHOW BAND 2019

"No Strings Attached" | NWAPA Open Class Finals: 87.25 Score | Third Place Out
of Sixteen Teams

• TENORS

• OUTSTANDING PERCUSSION PERFORMER AWARD

Getting quads (or tenor drums) was certainly a shock at the beginning of the
season. I had never even attempted to play tenors, and now I had to march on a
football field with them. With a combination of ab exercises, buying a tenor
pad, and extreme effort, I rose to the occasion and had a very successful
season, even winning an award from my percussion caption head.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PERCUSSION

I was very involved in the music programs at my middle school as well. I'm most
proud of earning the John Phillip Sousa Award in 8th grade. I go back frequently
to help teach, tech, and support their program.

FEATURED MUSIC PERFORMANCE VIDEOS

I've been playing the drums since I was five years old, with formal private
lessons for ten years. This is a small sample of my work on concert snare, drum
set, marching snare drum, and marching tenors.

2022 DCI MANDARINS TRIBUTE • SNARE

Senior Year. Over the summer I transcribed and learned the snare book for the
DCI World-Class Mandarins. I look forward to trying out for their snareline for
the 2023 season.

2022 SOLO ENSEMBLE COMPETITION • SNARE

Junior Year. I received a Superior Rating (highest) and qualified to move on to
the state competition for my performance of "Bolero for Ed" at the WMEA State
Solo and Ensemble Contest. (1 video)

2022 KAMIAK WINTER PERCUSSION • CENTER SNARE

Junior Year. Our show "Portraits" was Kamiak's first full season since 2019 and
my first full winter season in high school. After becoming battery section
leader, I helped launch the somewhat less experienced group to be one of
Kamiak's best winter groups ever. (1 video)

2021 KAMIAK SHOW BAND • SNARE

Junior Year. "Off the Wall" was one of my favorite seasons ever, breaking
multiple school records such as highest score, highest placement, and most
trophies won. (4 videos)

2021 KAMIAK SHOW BAND • SNARE CAM

Junior Year. A closeup look at the snare drum music from the 2021 Kamiak Show
Band season! (1 video)

2021 • KAMIAK JAZZ BAND • DRUM SET

Junior Year. For our second home performance, I played "I Can't Help It" which I
found difficult yet exciting. It even includes a drum break in the middle. (10
videos)

2020 KAMIAK WINTER PERCUSSION • SNARE

Freshman Year. Even with the season cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic,
we accomplished so much as a group, and it was my first experience on snare drum
at Kamiak High School. (1 video)

2019 KAMIAK SHOW BAND • TENORS

Freshman Year. After being put on tenor drums for the first time, I achieved the
Most Outstanding Battery Member award from our percussion caption head. (1
video)

ROCK • DRUM SET

Besides Jazz Band and private lessons, I also practice drum set on my own as a
hobby. My favorite bands include Led Zeppelin, Rush, and The Beatles. (4 videos)

A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT ME

Q.

WHAT ARE YOUR COLLEGE GOALS?

A.

I'm planning to take difficult math and science classes to go into a STEM field,
such as engineering. In parallel, I want to continue honing my craft of snare
drum and drum set performance through percussion classes and the college
marching band experience.

Q.

WHAT ARE YOUR LIFE GOALS?

A.

My goal in life is to be happy. To me, that means having a stable job using my
skills in mathematics while also continuing my hobby of drumming (unless it
turns into something more). My dream job in life is to work at Disney where I
could design or create rides. The combination of STEM and arts should help me
join their team of Imagineers eventually.

Q.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

A.

Besides drumming, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, playing
video games, and watching movies. My all-time favorite movies are from Harry
Potter, Marvel, and Star Wars.
