Title: Progressive feminist group calls on Democratic Party to adopt definition of anti-Semitism8/14/2018 ● 9:01 AM A women’s group has called on the Democratic Party to distance itself from anti-Semitism cloaked as criticism of Israel. By: Shiri Moshe, The Algemeiner A liberal women’s rights group is calling on the Democratic National Committee to adopt an official definition of antisemitism to combat a “rising tide” of anti-Jewish discrimination in the party. In a petition launched on Friday and signed by some 120 people, Women’s March For All (WMFA) warned that anti-Semitism — “often cloaked as anti-Zionism” — “has now become a serious problem in liberal movements worldwide,” including in Canada and the United Kingdom. The group was formed as an offshoot of the 2017 Women’s March on Washington, after the movement’s leaders — Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, and Carmen Perez — came under fire in March for their praise of Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader who has railed against “Satanic Jews” and been accused of sharing misogynistic, homophobic, and transphobic views. An official statement distancing the Women’s March from Farrakhan was dismissed by some as insufficient, with several regional chapters criticizing movement leaders and nearly 4,000 people signing a petition calling for their replacement. Nisi Jacobs, who helped draft that petition, later went on to launch WMFA. The group has since drawn attention for its opposition to antisemitism in left-wing spaces, as well as for its fundraiser on behalf of the Occupy Lafayette Park protests outside the White House, which has raised more than $13,000. “Being anti-Zionist is inherently anti-Semitic if the person claiming to be anti-Zionist is not against self-determination for any other oppressed group,” the WMFA petition read. “If one supports Palestinian self-determination, or Armenian self-determination, or Kurdish self-determination, but not Jewish self-determination (Zionism), that would be antisemitic.” It warned that some candidates from the edges of the Democratic Party “have made horrible and libelous remarks about Jews and Israel,” including Maria Estrada — who accused Israel of “genocide” and expressed support for Farrakhan — and Leslie Cockburn, who wrote a book that a New York Times reviewer said suggests that Israel is “somewhere behind just about everything that ails us.” Also identified are Julia Salazar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, two candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, which supports the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel — a Palestinian-led movement whose co-founder has rejected the notion that Jewish people have a right to national self-determination. Noting that “most Jews are both Democrats and Zionists (i.e. supporters of Israel’s right to exist),” WMFA called on the DNC to endorse the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which has been adopted by 31 members countries including the US. The IHRA describes antisemitism as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews,” and includes examples such as advancing “the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy” and “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination.” “Jews have successfully led, and fought for, progressive causes in this country for centuries,” WMFA emphasized. “Jews have earned the respect and support of the Democratic Party, which must take seriously the concerns of the Jewish community.” The post Progressive feminist group calls on Democratic Party to adopt definition of anti-Semitism appeared first on World Israel News.

Title: Netanyahu apologizes after Shin Bet detains American Jewish journalist8/14/2018 ● 5:32 AM The Shin Bet security agency has apologized for detaining American Jewish journalist Peter Beinart at Ben Gurion Airport. By: TPS and World Israel News The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) issued an apology Monday after American Jewish journalist, author and academic Peter Beinart was detained and questioned at Ben Gurion Airport when he arrived in the country for his niece’s bat mitzvah earlier this week. Beinart, who in the past has advocated for a boycott of Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria, published a blog post in the American Jewish website The Forward in which he said he had been taken aside for questioning and asked whether he had ever participated in any demonstrations in Israel. In March, the Knesset passed a law banning foreigners who promote a boycott of Israel from entering the country. On Monday, the Shin Bet said Beinart was detained due to “the mistaken considerations of personnel on the ground. We apologize for the inconvenience suffered by Mr. Beinart. The head of the Shin Bet has ordered an inquiry into the incident.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said via a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office that he had spoken with the agency to inquire when the incident occurred and was told it was due to an administrative error. “Israel is an open society which welcomes all – critics and supporters alike. Israel is the only country in the Middle East where people voice their opinions freely and robustly,” Netanyahu said. In response, Beinart tweeted, “Benjamin Netanyahu has half-apologized for my detention yesterday at Ben Gurion airport. I’ll accept when he apologizes to all the Palestinians and Palestinian-Americans who every day endure far worse.” The post Netanyahu apologizes after Shin Bet detains American Jewish journalist appeared first on World Israel News.

Title: Iran Takes Another Step Towards Restoring Nuclear Program8/13/2018 ● 12:38 PM Iran is working to restore its pre-nuclear deal capabilities to build a nuclear bomb. By: United with Israel Staff Iran announced on Saturday that it will bring back to the country the second batch of 20 percent enriched uranium which has been kept in Russia under the 2015 nuclear deal, another step in restarting its illicit nuclear program. Iran claims that the uranium will be used at the Tehran Research Reactor. “When we were inking the nuclear deal, we stopped production of 20 percent fuel and deposited the excess fuel in Russia in nearly 10 batches. We received the first batch nearly seven months ago and the second batch is about to be transferred back to Iran,” Behrouz Kamalvandi spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) stated, Iran’s Fars News agency reported. Each batch can be used for nearly a year, and therefore Iran has 20 percent fuel for the Tehran Reactor for at least seven to eight years, Kamalvandi said. “If the nuclear deal remains alive, the other sides should sell us the fuel and if the nuclear deal dies, then we would feel unimpeded to produce the 20 percent fuel ourselves,” Kamalvandi said. Uranium can be enriched to levels ranging from reactor fuel or medical and research purposes to the core of an atomic bomb. The low-enriched uranium is suitable mainly for generating nuclear power and requires substantial further enrichment for use in the core of a nuclear warhead. At 20 percent enrichment, the U-235 isotope has already traveled 90 percent of the distance required to reach weapons-grade. In April, AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi said his organization can restore 20-percent uranium enrichment at its Fordo nuclear facility in just four days if the nuclear deal is scrapped. He said this statement should be seen as a warning by the “other side” against cancelling the deal, stressing that Iran could reveal more extensive progress in other parts of its nuclear activities that exceed previous levels. Title: Corbyn’s 2015 Campaign was Partly Financed by Pro-Hamas Donors8/13/2018 ● 9:31 AM Corbyn’s campaign for the Labour leadership was partly funded by two supporters of Palestinian terrorists. By: United with Israel Staff Jeremy Corbyn’s 2015 campaign to become leader of the United Kingdom’s Labour Party was partly funded by Dr. Ibrahim Hamami of London, who is alleged to be aligned with Hamas, the genocidal anti-Semitic terrorist organization, and by retired Professor Ted Honderich, who stated in 2011 that Palestinians had a “moral right” to engage in terrorism, the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) has revealed Monday. CAA reviewed Electoral Commission documents and found that Hamami gave £2,000, while Honderich gave £5,000. Corbyn had three main individual donors to his campaign, of which Hamami and Honderich were two. According to an investigation by The Telegraph in 2015, Hamami is founder and director of the pro-Hamas Palestinian Affairs Centre and has been a columnist for the official Hamas newspaper, The Filastin. According to the Daily Mail, Hamami praised violence against Israelis on his Facebook page, describing the attacks as acts of “dignity, freedom and honor”. Honderich wrote in The Guardian in 2011 that “Palestinians have a moral right to their terrorism within historic Palestine against neo-Zionism”. Corbyn reported the donation from Hamami as being from a “Dr Ibrahim Hamam,” but Hamami confirmed to The Telegraph that he was the donor. The donation was given under strange circumstances, the CAA points out. Hamami’s donation was reportedly part of a £10,000 donation raised at a fundraising dinner by Friends of Al Aqsa, whose founder told a cheering crowd in 2009 during a war between Israel and Hamas that “Hamas is not a terrorist organization. The reason that they hate Hamas is because they refuse to be subjugated to be occupied by the Israeli state and we salute Hamas for standing up to Israel.” £8,000 of the £10,000 raised at the dinner was not declared because Corbyn claimed that the donations had been made out to the wrong person. Support from a Listed Terrorist Organization According to Electoral Commission returns, previous donations to Corbyn included a donation of £2,821 from Interpal, a British charity which was listed as a terrorist organization by the US due to its ties to Hamas, and a donation of £1,300 from the Palestinian Return Centre, which has in the past faced accusations of being “Hamas’ organizational branch in Europe”. “In light of Mr. Corbyn’s decision in 2014 to lay a wreath at the graves of the Black September terrorists who brutalized and slaughtered Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, his donation history is all the more concerning,” the CAA stated. It was referring to an investigation by the Daily Mail published over the weekend that found evidence suggesting that Corbyn laid a wreath and participated in a prayer at the graves of the Black September terrorists responsible for the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Title: Women steadily rising in IDF combat ranks8/13/2018 ● 8:41 AM This post Women steadily rising in IDF combat ranks is via Kehila News Israel. JERUSALEM, Israel – Increasing numbers of women are opting for combat roles in the Israel Defense Forces. This year, 1,050 female soldiers joined combat units – up from 500 just three years ago – the IDF announced this week. While the IDF is pleased with the trend, it creates inevitable tension within the ranks, especially among the religiously observant. Brig. Gen. Guy Hasson, head of the IDF’s Armored Corps, sees the increase of women in combat roles as a plus. IDF women in training, Photo, IDF Facebook“We understand the potential in the operational value of both the Border Defense Forces and the Armored Corps. There is potential here for girls who really want to work for the defense of the state,” Hasson said. Israel Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin promoted the first female squadron commander and the first female air traffic controller. IDF combat soldier, Photo, IDF FacebookThere’s also a slow, but steady increase in the number of ultra-Orthodox men serving in the military. Some of them have been shunned by their families and communities for the decision. The IDF has invested a great deal of effort to accommodate their religious requirements. While the majority of religious girls choose national service (Sherut Leumi) rather than military enlistment, even that number is changing. A Knesset study released a little over a year ago showed 2,000 enlistments in 2015, up from 930 in 2010. This YouTube video, posted a year ago by zig123ize, shows how these young women train. But it’s not only religiously observant soldiers who have a problem with their female counterparts, especially as instructors. A basic tenet of Judaism calls for separation of men and women. At the Kotel (Western Wall), Photo, IDF FacebookA recent incident involving a female instructor illustrated the dilemma. During a teaching session, the majority of the class either looked away or turned their backs on her, YNet news reported. “This wasn’t a group of Haredim [ultra-Orthodox],” YNet quotes her as having said. “This is the abysmal reality.” In response to the incident, the IDF Spokesman’s Office issued a statement. “During a training lesson at the Paratroopers Brigade’s parachuting course, a female instructor demonstrated an exercise to the soldiers from a platoon consisting of Hesder Yeshiva students. Some 30 soldiers who did not wish to view the demonstration by a female soldier turned their heads. The unit’s commander told them afterward their behavior was unacceptable and any cadet who behaves “disrespectfully toward a female instructor will be removed from the course.” In June, the IDF proudly introduced the army’s first four female tank commanders. They’re joining a unit at the border with Egypt. This article originally appeared on CBN News, August 12, 2018, and reposted with permission. Title: Rocket barrage raises tensions in southern Israel8/9/2018 ● 7:56 PM This post Rocket barrage raises tensions in southern Israel is via Kehila News Israel. Israelis in the South were forced to relocate day camps to bomb shelters or close them altogether as nearly 200 rockets were fired at Israel in one day, injuring seven people and damaging buildings in the region yesterday. On Thursday afternoon an official in the Gaza Strip declared that the latest round of violence had ended early and that armed groups in Gaza would cease their fire and that it was up to Israel to do the same. “The current round in Gaza has ended. The resistance responded to the enemy’s crimes in Gaza,” a Palestinian official said. “The continuation of calm in Gaza depends on (Israel’s) behavior.” Despite the declared cessation of launches, Palestinians launched a brief round of rockets on Thursday afternoon including one that landed near Beersheba. This was the first time the southern Negev city — some 25 miles north of Gaza — was struck since the Gaza war in 2014 and shows that the militant groups in the coastal enclave have long-range missiles in their arsenal. The initial rocket barrage was triggered by the accidental killing by the IDF of two Hamas members after the army mistakenly thought the terror group was staging a cross-border attack. Hamas was running a military exercise at the time. The IDF had been anticipating a revenge attack. Israel’s Home Front Command cancelled summer day camps and agricultural work was prohibited. Public events were limited to 300 people and rail traffic between Ashkelon and Sderot was halted. Beaches and a local college were also closed. So far, the military has focused on targeting Hamas infrastructure while avoiding casualties, in an apparent effort to prevent further escalation of violence. Israel struck 150 terror sites in air strikes, the army said. Israeli officials indicated that they are prepared for a wider confrontation with Hamas if need be. “Whatever is needed to protect our citizens and our soldiers will be done, no matter what the price will be in Gaza,” said Housing Minister Yoav Gallant, who serves on the security cabinet. “Let’s hope for peace, and let’s be ready for war.” In recent months, Hamas has launched several one-day rocket barrages at Israel with more than 100 rockets in 24 hours each time. The rounds of violence have yet to escalate into full blown war as in 2014, but tensions have remained high in the border communities in southern Israel. One source of tension has been the constant stream of kites and balloons sent into Israel with incendiary devices attached to them. These seemingly innocuous objects have silently destroyed thousands of acres of farmland and caused millions of shekels worth of damage over the last few months. Since March, Palestinians have regularly demonstrated at the Gaza border. The demonstrations escalated to violent confrontations in May coinciding with the opening of the American embassy in Jerusalem. Since then, kites and balloons have continued flying over the border in addition to occasional 24-hour eruptions of rocket launches. Title: Startling reversal: Israel to export natural gas to Egypt8/7/2018 ● 5:13 PM This post Startling reversal: Israel to export natural gas to Egypt is via Kehila News Israel. JERUSALEM, Israel – Egypt is poised to begin importing natural gas from Israel early in 2019. The $1.5 billion deal signed last February will hopefully benefit both countries. Between 2011 and 2014, Islamic terror cells embedded in the Sinai Peninsula periodically attacked Egypt’s natural gas pipelines to Israel and Jordan. Security cameras caught some of the jihadists on film. Today, the situation is reversed. The importer and exporter have exchanged roles. “Imports will start in small quantities first and will gradually increase to reach their climax in September 2019,” Reuters quoted an anonymous source, who declined to provide details on the agreement. According to the report, the agreements call for Israel to transport 64 billion cubic meters of natural gas from two offshore fields – Tamar and Leviathan – to Egypt’s Dolphinus Holdings over the next 10 years. Watch the installation of the Tamar Platform. Half of the gas will come from the Tamar field, which has an estimated 238 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and the other half from Leviathan. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi believes the agreement will elevate Egypt’s status as an energy provider in the region. Since his election in May 2014, el-Sisi has devoted much of his time and energy to rehabilitating the economy. His first major undertaking was refurbishing and expanding the Suez Canal, projected to more than double its annual revenue from $5 to $12.5 billion. The ambitious project includes a new city, industrial areas, fish farms and other facilities. El-Sisi also called on Israel to help rout terror cells embedded in the Sinai. The government answered the call, allowing Egypt to deploy its troops to the Sinai under the watchful eye of the Israel Defense Forces. Egypt also clamped down on Hamas, destroying many of its tunnels dug near the Rafah border crossing to smuggle weapons and reinforcements to the Sinai terrorists. Egyptian mediators have been less successful in convincing rival Palestinian factions to reunite. Agreements have come and gone over the years. Egypt has also served as mediator in ceasefire agreements between Israel and Hamas. Despite political differences, Egypt and Israel’s 1979 peace agreement has remained intact, though most contact takes place behind closed doors. Title: Israel receives highest-ever credit rating8/7/2018 ● 12:43 PM This post Israel receives highest-ever credit rating is via Kehila News Israel. The Standard & Poors (S&P) credit rating agency upgraded its credit rating for Israel from A+ to AA- (stable outlook), ushering Israel into an exclusive group of 15 nations that hold the prestigious AA ratings (AA+, AA and AA-). The upgrade was announced on Friday, August 3rd after S&P changed its outlook for Israel’s economy from “stable” to “positive” approximately one year ago. This upgrade represents the highest-ever credit rating given to Israel by S&P or any other credit rating agency in the history of the nation and comes one month after Moody’s credit rating agency also raised its outlook for Israel from “stable” to “positive” in July 2018, indicating an upgrade in their rating from A1 to Aa- in the coming 12-18 months. S&P explained its decision by stating that “Israel has demonstrated sound economic performance since the global financial crisis, with a current GDP of about $140 billion (or 50%) larger than in 2010, the current account in a sustainable surplus, and unemployment at historical lows,”. They also added that despite Israel’s political situation being “highly fragmented” and the public debt remaining relatively high, “we now think that fiscal slippages leading to a significant reversal of the debt path are unlikely. This is based on our belief that, absent global trade shocks, Israel’s economic growth outlook will remain solid and allow the government to accommodate pressures coming from social and infrastructure spending, as well as a potential moderate escalation of security risks”. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the upgrade, stating: “These decisions reflect the strength of the Israeli economy and the correct and responsible economic policy that we are leading on behalf of Israel’s citizens”. After being at the helm of Israel’s economy since 2015, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon also expressed his satisfaction from the S&P upgrade. “In the past three years, the Israeli economy has soared to the best macro data in its history. The confidence expressed by the strongest economic bodies in the world allows us to continue to grow the economy and to help reduce social gaps and strengthen the middle class and weaker sectors. The increased rating of AA- will save us billions of shekels in financing expenses, which we will redirect to the health, education and welfare ministries.” He said, optimistically adding “Although now it is double-A minus, this minus will disappear in a year”. Moody’s stated two main reasons for its outlook upgrade last month, one being recent positive trends in Israel’s government debt and the second Israel’s robust economy. “The general government debt ratio has declined by more than 10 percentage points since the last upward move in Israel’s credit rating in 2008 to around 60% of GDP, reflecting in part a prudent budgetary framework and a robust growth performance. This contrasts sharply against trends in many other advanced country peers both before and after the global financial crisis. For example, Israel is one of only a handful of advanced economies (including Norway, Switzerland and Singapore, which are all rated Aaa with a stable outlook) with a lower debt to GDP ratio today than before the global financial crisis. Furthermore, central government deficits have remained below 3% of GDP over the past 4 years, despite repeated upward revisions of the government’s own deficit targets.” “The second driver of the decision to assign a positive outlook is Israel’s increasingly resilient economy, supported by the dynamism of the high tech sector, increased energy independence and a strengthening external position, which, if sustained, will continue to support more favourable growth rates than similarly rated peers,”. Finance Minister Kahlon reacted to Moody’s outlook upgrade, stating “The rating outlook upgrade is further evidence of the strength and stability of the Israeli economy. All the data indicate that the economic policy that we are pursuing, including a free and responsible economy alongside strengthening the middle class and poorer sections of society, is the right way”. Credit rating agencies base their ratings on the governments ability to repay its debts, but also heavily consider geo-political, macroeconomic and other strategic factors pertinent to each country, often comparing between peer countries. The ratings given by S&P, Moody’s and Fitch are the most prominent indicator of a country’s economic situation and are used to evaluate investment opportunities of many types. A higher credit rating expresses confidence in Israel’s economic policies and its future, and will allow the government to finance at lower costs. Because of the credit rating upgrade, Israel’s capital market reacted positively with significant gains on Sunday, August 5th, seeing the largest indexes, Tel-Aviv 35 and Tel-Aviv 125, rising 1.69% and 1.55% respectively by the end of trading. This is the highest level the market has been at in almost three years. The Shekel also strengthened 0.5% against both the USD and the Euro due to the upgrade. Looking ahead, S&P analysts predict an average year over year GDP growth of 3.3% between 2018 and 2021, resulting from private consumption, corporate investments and strong performance in the high-tech and fields of service exports. Title: Sin: What is it?8/13/2018 ● 9:11 PM This post Sin: What is it? is via Kehila News Israel. The Hebrew word for sin is khet, which is the word used on a firing range when a target is missed. The opposite of the wordkhet is torah, which means the standard of instructions for hitting the targeted objective. The three-letter Hebrew root of that word torah is yara, which means to shoot in a direction, the same root as mora (teacher), and hora (parent), and horaot (instructions). Torah is often poorly translated as Law (which is in Hebrew, khok). This is well understood by such writers of the New Testament as Yohanan (1 John 3:4), who wrote “Whosoever commits sin (khet) transgresses the Law (torah), for sin (khet) is the transgression of the Law (torah).” Sin is not only a single act of stealing or committing adultery, but is a direction travelled. It is a dynamic movement that may begin with a single step in the wrong direction, but then will most assuredly lead to a second step in that direction, and ultimately to a voyage culminating by incremental changes in catastrophe. The Ten Commandments (in Hebrew: the Ten Words) inform us that the process proceeds from the first generation to the third and fourth generations and, if not repented, to destruction. The first generation took the first step in the wrong direction, away from the Light, whose behavior then is inherited to the next, and by the third the sin has become a normalized lifestyle, and by the fourth, near to irredeemable chaos of darkness, ripe for the consequences of judgment. This principle is also illustrated in Israel being held in Egyptian captivity until the fourth generation, until the sin of the Amorites came to its fullness (Genesis 15:16). Perhaps one of the best illustrations of this process appears in Spielberg’s film Back to the Future. There we have a marvelous story of events occurring in a normal small California town in the 1980’s, until Doc comes up with a time machine. His time travel with young McFly to that same town in the 21st century is thrown into skelter when a bad fellow, Biff, discovers and takes an almanac tossed into the trash that tells of all the sports wins of the 20th century. Biff travels back to the 1950’s and gives his younger self the almanac, and the young bad Biff becomes a multi-millionaire. When doc and McFly return to the quiet town of the 1980’s they discover a totally different town of violence and corruption, led by the rich Biff. Then Doc discovers they were now in their alternative town, and the only way to change history back was to take the time machine to the 1950’s and get the almanac from the young Biff, bringing salvation by preventing that disastrous outcome. Which finally they succeed in doing. It is like the Bible’s description of the Jerusalem that is above, and the Jerusalem which is below: sin has created the alternative Jerusalem, until the Heavenly Jerusalem descends from its upper dimension. It is the miracle of grace in the Messiah’s crucifixion and resurrection in the fallen alternative Jerusalem of the 1st Century that the inevitable catastrophic course may be stayed and turned and re-directed back to the Light of life and health. The dark consequences of sin are taken into that sacrificial Lamb of God, the merciful divine provision for the forgiveness of sin, a healing and new beginning available to individuals and nations, if they so choose. Come, let us return to YHVH. He has torn us to but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. – Hosea 6:1-2 This post Sin: What is it? is via Kehila News Israel.

Title: Parashat Re’eh: The Bible is not about me, it’s about others8/13/2018 ● 8:07 AM This post Parashat Re’eh: The Bible is not about me, it’s about others is via Kehila News Israel. Read the teaching below, or watch a video of the teaching by Yehuda Bachana. Shabbat Shalom. This Shabbat We read Parashat Re’eh. The opening of this week’s parasha indicates a choice. The people are give the choice to think for themselves. This possibility is given to the people – they can think and choose. This option is given to the city, to the community, to the family, and down to the individual. Anyone can think, anyone can choose. The Importance of Doubt Everything you do for people and families who need help is 100% as if you did it personally for Yeshua. In every religion, too many issues have become absolute axioms, they must not be discussed, they must not be questioned, they must not be examined. We must not ask questions – we must accept them as truth! And if not – we are in great trouble – we’ll be gossiped about, condemned, and judged as heretics. What is the importance of free will? The great importance is that it invites hesitation, uncertainty, even doubt. If someone has no doubt at all, and everything is clear and known to him, such a person is usually not a good person. Because such an approach invites absolutism and fatal zeal. Such an approach engenders human extremism, arrogance, lack of consideration, and insensitivity to others. Our parasha offers us the opportunity to question the truth. Everything is subject to choice, there is no predetermined nature. There is no faith that comes without the agony of doubts, tests, thorough study, and then more tests and more studies. If we go through this torment, we will gain pure faith, modest faith, and great concern for others. Because we understand that regardless of the opinions, faith, or choice of the person at our side, the person was nevertheless created in God’s image and likeness. The Bible is Not About Me, It’s About Others And indeed we find in our parasha an emphasis on caring for others, widows, orphans, converts, and simply: poor people. Look at the holidays, which appear towards the end of the parasha. It is impossible even to celebrate the holidays properly, as a commandment, without caring for the poor, without opening the hand and the heart to foreigners, to the weak, and to the poor among us. If we notice, the main emphasis of the Bible is not me, myself, and I. The Bible is not about me. I am not at the center of the Scriptures. Yeshua teaches me that God is at the center of Scripture, and as a second point, my neighbor is at the center of Scripture. The entire Old and New Testaments – according to Yeshua – come down to our relationship towards God and our relationship towards others. And to our surprise, generally our faith is not in the center of Scripture, but rather our actions, our fruit. Not what we believe in the heart, but what we do with our own two hands. We have become accustomed to emphasizing our tenets, brushing up our doctrine, and sharpening our Bible lessons. The true emphasis of Scripture is on doing. The execution of Scripture, the physical manifestation of faith. Yeshua Prefers Action Over Faith One of the passages in the New Testament that has always attracted me, and has always been hugely significant, is the “Judgment of the Nations”. In Matthew 25, Yeshua sets the righteous on the right and the non-righteous, the wicked, on the left. What does the king say? Jesus says to the righteous, “You gave me water, because I was thirsty, you fed me because I was hungry, you helped me because I was miserable.” What is the answer of the righteous? “Yeshua, our Lord, our king, when? When were you hungry, or thirsty, or in need? When? I helped a lot of people, but I remember them all, I made contact with each and every one, I gave personal attention to everyone. Sir, I do not remember you! Apologies, but you are confused. Maybe someone else helped you?” The King, Yeshua, will answer and say, “Everything you did for those people and those families who needed help is 100% as if you did it personally for me. Come into your inheritance, come into the Kingdom of Heaven.” Jesus does not mention faith here at all, but rather what people did or did not do. They helped or did not help. Period. The Torah is About Charity In this week’s parasha, more than 50 commandments are mentioned. But the commandments that deal with charity are especially prominent. “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them.” – Deuteronomy 15:7 [NIV] The commandment “…be openhanded…” appears twice (Deuteronomy 15:8,11). The parasha continues with addition commandments which care for the poor. Today we learn about: tithing for the poor (in every third year, the entire year’s tithe goes towards the poor and those in need), the cancellation of debts, giving loans even when the seventh year approaches, and the giving of payment or some type of tithe to a slave who ends a period of slavery. Even the commandment of “Be joyful at your festival…”, in the three festivals, includes “…the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows…” You Can’t Take Anything With You In the context of charity I want to start with a story: A few years ago a successful businessman, who was known as a rich but gracious man, died. He occasionally donated to worthy causes and charities. When that rich man was about to die, he entrusted his children with two closed envelopes and ordered them to open the first immediately after his death, and the second after the end of the “shiva”, the Jewish time of mourning. When the day arrived… and he passed away. The boys opened the first envelope with the father’s request: “I want to be buried with my socks on.” The boys wanted to fulfill their father’s last request, but the Chevra Kadisha (the Jewish burial service) insisted that according to Jewish law no man was to be buried with socks. All their pleas, cries, and threats – and even the large bribes – did not help. And the father was buried without socks. They all looked forward to the end of the shiva to discover the secret of the second envelope. All the family and friends gathered and the eldest son took the envelope with trembling hands and opened it. Inside it was written: “I know you buried me without socks. I just wanted to show you that no matter how much money and property you have in the world. When you leave it, you will not be able to take even one measly pair of socks with you…” We Can Choose Blessing Yeshua taught us not to gather our treasure here, in this world, which can lose its value, can be stolen, rot, or simply disappear. Instead, Yeshua encourages us to store up our treasure in Heaven, where our savings are guarded, where there is especially large interest – even tenfold. This week’s parasha teaches us that the choice is ours, we can choose the blessing, we can choose to fulfill the Word of God, to carry out the commandments and execute the faith. And God’s word promises us a blessing, which is translated as peace, tranquility, security, fruitfulness, success, health, and joy in the family. There is one verse that jumps out at me personally from the parasha. I have read it already, but I want to read it again: “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need.” – Deuteronomy 15:7,8 [NIV] The commandment here is clear, we must help the poor, the people and families in distress. How Netivyah Helps the Poor I encourage you to find a charitable organization that you trust and is close to your place of residence, to participate there and lend a hand. Also, if you are interested in helping out in Jerusalem, we help 130 families on a weekly basis. On average each family has 5 people, so we help about 650 adults and children. Every week a representative of each family contacts us, and they receive a selection of selected fruits and vegetables, a selection of frozen products such as fish, chicken and meat, and a selection of products such as oil, rice, or even cornflakes. In Netivyah, we have been carrying out this sacred work since 2000, 18 years of charity. We work hand in hand with the staff of Jerusalem’s welfare offices. Our weekly Torah portion emphasizes the giving to the poor, the concern for the weak in society, the caring for those who are different from us. A Tale of Two Seas – Which One Are You? I will end with a short story: There are two lakes in the Land of Israel: in one, its waters are sweet and fish live there. Trees spread their branches over it and send their thirsty roots into its healthy waters. Children play along its shores, as children played in biblical times. The Jordan River brings to this sea sparkling water that comes down from the hills. The people built their houses near its banks and the birds built their nests here, and all the animals are happy that they have settled in this place. But the Jordan River continues to flow south, and flows into another sea. Here there is no trace of fish, no leaves, no birds singing. Heavy air hangs on the water. Man, beast, and bird do not drink from the waters of this lake. What is the cause of this enormous difference between the two lakes, which are not that far apart? The Jordan is not to blame, it pours its water into both lakes. The environment is not to blame, nor is the land. The Sea of Galilee receives its water from the Jordan River, but the Sea of Galilee does not store the water for itself. For every drop that flows into it, it issues a drop from it. The second lake stores the water coming into it with the greed of a miser. It will not give up its water. Every drop that comes to it is held onto. The Sea of Galilee gives, and therefore it is a living sea. The second sea does not give, and we call it the “Dead Sea”. There are two kinds of lakes in Israel, and two types of people are in the world. This article originally appeared on Netivyah and is reposted with permission. Title: Israel Security Officials to US: Don’t Cut UNRWA Gaza Funding8/14/2018 ● 9:28 AM Israeli officials requested that the United States not cut funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza. Their request came amid concerns that it may push the humanitarian crisis in the Strip over the brink. In January, President Donald Trump’s administration announced a massive 50% cut to the U.N agency, which received approximately $150 Million from the U.S. annually. The decision was made following a Tweet by President Donald Trump which read: “We pay the Palestinians HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect,” adding that “With the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?” American officials requested Israel’s stance on the matter, to determine how much money can be cut from UNRWA’s budget. In response, Israeli security and diplomatic officials stated that while they have no problem with shutting down UNRWA’s activities in Judea and Samaria, as there are plenty of organizations set in place to fill its shoes, they oppose cutting funding to the agency’s Gaza activities, as there are no organizations set to take their place. It may lead to a massive deterioration in the humanitarian situation in the strip. While the professional stance of the Israeli security and diplomatic apparatuses is against shutting down the agency in Gaza, the official stance of Israel’s government is actually that UNRWA must be dissolved altogether. In January, following President Trump’s announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “UNRWA is an organization which perpetuates the refugee crisis of the Palestinians, as well as perpetuates the narrative of the [Palestinian] ‘right’ of return in order to destroy the State of Israel,” adding that “This is an organization that was established 70 years ago exclusively for Palestinian refugees, while there already exists a UN High Commissioner to deal with the rest of the world’s refugee problems… This absurdity must cease.” At the time, Netanyahu suggested that the funds meant for Gaza be diverted to other UN agencies working in Gaza, however, this recent report suggests that that is not possible or practical, as UNRWA is not only the only organization in Gaza with the capacity to operate in Gaza, but also the largest employer in Gaza. Following the American announcement in January, Israel’s Foreign Ministry tried to find a compromise on funding UNRWA, as it too believes closing down the agency’s operations would push Gaza past the point of no return. However, the suggestion that Israel was working behind the scenes to moderate Trump’s threats generated criticism within the prime minister’s Likud Party and within the coalition. Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said in response to the reports that he “finds it hard to believe that Israel’s Foreign Ministry is opposed to defunding UNRWA,” an organization he said “perpetuates the Palestinian refugee problem instead of solving it.” Accusing UNRWA of “supporting terrorism in various ways” Erdan said: “This is the organization the Foreign Ministry is protecting from defunding? I truly hope that is not true.” Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of Likud’s coalition partner, the Jewish Home party, said “UNRWA is a terror supporting organization. It’s very existence perpetuates the dire state of the people of Gaza, who are being oppressed by the Hamas regime. Support to the people of Gaza should be no different than the support of the people of Syria who are suffering under a terror regime, or from any other group of descendants of refugees anywhere else in the world… I expect all government bodies in Israel, including the Foreign Ministry, to support a decision to defund an organization which employs Hamas terrorists and hides their rockets in its schools.”

Title: Turkish Lira Sinks Against Dollar, Economy in Trouble8/14/2018 ● 7:32 AM The Turkish lira plunged as much as 11% against the dollar, hitting a record low, before recovering some of its losses in volatile trading. The lira had already plummeted more than 20% last week as a political clash with the United States intensified and investors fretted about the Turkish government’s lack of action to tackle the problems plaguing its economy. The lira’s tailspin has unsettled global markets, with shares of European banks coming under particular pressure because of concerns over the lenders’ exposure to Turkey. The jitters have also hit the currencies of other major emerging markets, such as South Africa and India. On Monday, stocks fell 2% in Tokyo and more than 1% in Hong Kong. Major European markets were down around 0.5%, with shares in banks including Spain’s BBVA and Italy’s Unicredit (UNCFF) sliding 3%. Related: How a currency meltdown in Turkey threatens Europe Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed calls for the country to raise interest rates to try to ease the crisis — and has lashed out at the United States after it announced new trade tariffs on Turkey. “You are a strategic partner in NATO and on the other hand you stab your ally in the back? Is this acceptable?” he said in a speech Monday. Fears of a debt crisis Economists are warning that if confidence isn’t restored quickly, Turkey could lurch into a recession and debt crisis requiring a bailout from the International Monetary Fund. “Investors are clearly concerned that Turkey’s government won’t act (or allow the central bank to act) to shore up the currency, and fears are mounting that this could result in a crisis in Turkey’s banking sector,” William Jackson, chief emerging markets economist at research firm Capital Economics, wrote in a note to clients Friday. The lira is now down more than 40% against the dollar since the start of the year, making it far harder for Turkish companies to pay back loans they have taken out in the US currency. Meanwhile, the US government is using the lira crisis to ramp up pressure on Turkey over its detention of an American pastor. “I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar!” President Donald Trump tweeted Friday. “Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!” Investors wait for ‘convincing response’ The Turkish government has so far struggled to soothe investors’ concerns. Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said in a series of tweets late Sunday that the government had started introducing an economic action plan of “necessary measures” to address the situation. Albayrak, who is Erdogan’s son-in-law, didn’t provide much in the way of details. The central bank then announced in a statement early Monday that it would “take all necessary measures to maintain financial stability” and “provide all the liquidity the banks need.” It also saidit would slash the amount of funds that banks are required to hold in reserve. The Turkish currency erased some of its earlier losses, but the announcements weren’t enough to trigger a rally. The lira was down around 7% against the dollar in afternoon trading in Europe. Investors are waiting for “a convincing response from the central bank and government,” Rob Carnell, an economist at investment bank ING, said in a note to clients Monday. One dollar now buys a little under seven lira, compared with fewer than four at the start of the year. Murat Askanat, a toy seller in Istanbul, told CNN that rising prices were making it harder to do business. “We do not know what will happen next, this is the problem,” said Askanat. “The products that I used to buy for 10 lira become 20 now. How can I reflect this to my clients?” Turkish leaders have insisted that the lira’s crash is the result of a speculative attack rather than any real problems in the country’s economy. Turkish authorities said Monday that they were investigating 346 social media accounts that they accused of provoking the wild movements in the currency, according to the state news agency. The “law will be applied to those who release fake news about banks, financial institutions and companies that are open to the public,” the Turkish Capital Markets Board said in a statement. But investors are more concerned about the lack of strong action by the central bank, which stunned markets late last month by leaving interest rates unchanged. Many observers interpreted the unorthodox decision as a sign Erdogan, who supports lower interest rates, had increased his influence over the bank. “We did not and will not compromise the rules of free market economy,” Erdogan said. “Nobody should listen to speculations.” Emerging market turmoil Investors have flocked to the United States in recent months, drawn by rising bond yields and a stronger dollar as the Federal Reserve continues to gradually increase interest rates. The trend has set off turmoil in emerging markets: Argentina was forced in June to ask the International Monetary Fund for a $50 billion bailout. Turkey’s plight has raised fears of more casualties. The South African rand plummeted as much as 8% against the dollar early Monday before recovering to trade down more than 2%. India’s rupee lost around 1% against the dollar, touching a record low. But some market analysts are advising investors against abandoning emerging markets in general as result of the turbulence in Turkey. “The drivers of the lira’s decline are very specific to Turkey,” Kerry Craig, a global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, said in a note to clients. “Therefore it should not derail the positive fundamentals in other emerging markets over a longer term.”

Title: Can Medicine Bring Israelis and Palestinians Together?8/14/2018 ● 7:03 AM It is an irony of the Middle East. At the same time that Gaza terrorists send burning balloons and kites and have – for now – stopped hurling rockets and missiles at southern Israel, Israeli and Palestinian physicians are collaborating at Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center. Medicine and caring for the sick it seems, can bring enemies together. The July issue of The Lancet Oncology medical journal has published an article describing a successful model of Israeli-Palestinian collaboration between Rambam and Augusta Victoria Hospital in east Jerusalem. Professor Ziv Gil co-authored the article. “The partnership of Israeli and Palestinian physicians from both hospitals demonstrates the great potential of peacemaking in our region through improving treatment of cancer patients,” says Gil, director of the otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat)-head-and-neck surgery at Rambam. The Lancet article presents the growth curve for radiation treatments of oncology patients at Augusta Victoria since the program began and highlight how quickly the Palestinian physicians learned how to treat a variety of malignancies. The article also discusses the subject of continuity of care for complex tumors in Palestinian patients by staff from both hospitals. The joint project, which began five years ago, aims to promote interpersonal relationships among staff from a variety of disciplines to foster independence of the Palestinian healthcare system. It hopes to reach two targets – the formation of an independent Palestinian healthcare system; and assuring continuity of medical care in the Palestinian sector until an independent healthcare system is established there. The project includes a hospital-skills-enhancement program at Rambam for Palestinian medical staffers; Palestinian and Israeli medical teams working together at Augusta Victoria located on the southern side of the Mount of Olives; and referral of patients with complicated clinical conditions from Augusta Victoria to Rambam to be managed by staff from both hospitals. So far, 23 doctors from the east Jerusalem hospital have participated in the program for enhancing hospital skills in various disciplines, including head and neck surgery, oncology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, nephrology and plastic surgery. Graduates of the skills’ enhancement program have obtained positions in other hospitals and clinics throughout Judea and Samaria. Using their newly obtained skills, they have established medical services previously nonexistent in the Palestine Authority (PA). Treatments for these patients include specialized surgical procedures not currently available in the territories, including robotic surgery, endoscopic surgery, reconstructive surgery, transplants and surgical removal of skull-based tumors. “The collaborative Israeli-Palestinian physicians’ program and its results over the past five years are evidence that common goals can be deployed as the basis for building cooperation and understanding between our peoples,” adds Gil. “The model demonstrates the potential of cancer treatment as a tool for building peace in our region of the world.” “It is clear that successful development of a healthcare system is contingent upon a multiplicity of parameters, and we cannot rely upon this program only or on other similar initiatives,” adds Dr. Salem Billan, an Israeli-Arab who heads Rambam’s head-and-neck-tumor unit at Rambam and one of the program’s developers. “This platform should be adopted by Palestinian and Israeli government agencies or by the international community to be used as a constructive tool for development of a healthcare system in developing countries in areas of tension.” About four years ago, during Operation Protective Edge, The Lancet published a biting letter criticizing Israel. The letter, entitled Open Letter to the People of Gaza, bashed Israel’s policies and caused a stir in the world of academia and medicine. Physicians and researchers worldwide called for a boycott of the journal, while some called attention to The Lancet’s overall “anti-Israel editorial policy.” At the height of the controversy, Rambam director-general Prof. Rafael Beyar and Prof. Karl Skorecki, the hospital’s director of medical and research development, invited The Lancet editor-in-chief Prof. Richard Horton to Israel to see the reality of the country with his own eyes and learn about its healthcare system. Prof. Mark Clarfield, a gerontologist at Beersheba’s Ben-Gurion University, also joined the mission. During Horton’s visit, the British physician apologized to some of the Israeli doctors: “There is no cause for a BDS-like boycott on Israeli physicians and researchers,” he asserted. A short time after the visit, he published an article in his journal describing his impressions of the Israel visit, complimenting the medical institutions he saw. In addition, transcripts of debates in which Horton participated, as well as his lecture at Rambam, were published in Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal (RMMJ.org.il), an international journal sponsored by Rambam that is both peer reviewed and indexed in PubMed. During that visit, Horton decided to devote a whole issue of The Lancet to the Israeli healthcare system, and it was published in May 2017 within the framework of a Tel Aviv science convention attended by medical and academic administrators that included Prof. Arnon Afek, then deputy director-general of the Health. The special issue of The Lancet was presented at two other scientific conferences held that week in Nazareth and Beersheba and finally at a formal meeting in the home of the President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, with Horton, his editorial staff and authors of the papers in that issue in attendance.

Title: Netanyahu condemns UK’s Corbyn for Munich terrorist memorial8/14/2018 ● 12:46 AM United Kingdom Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu exchanged words on Twitter on Monday after photos surfaced last Friday of the former laying a wreath near the graves of the Black September terrorists who killed 11 Israelis at the 1972 Munich Olympics. “The laying of a wreath by Jeremy Corbyn on the graves of the terrorist who perpetrated the Munich massacre and his comparison of Israel to the Nazis deserves unequivocal condemnation from everyone – left, right and everything in between,” Netanyahu tweeted. George Galloway, a former Labour Party MP known for his fierce anti-Israel stances and support for Corbyn, directly responded to the prime minister’s post with “Irony complete.” Corbyn retweeted Netanyahu’s post and responded, “Israeli PM @Netanyahu’s claims about my actions and words are false. What deserves unequivocal condemnation is the killing of over 160 Palestinian protesters in Gaza by Israeli forces since March, including dozens of children.” “The nation state law sponsored by @Netanyahu’s government discriminates against Israel’s Palestinian minority,” Corbyn said in a subsequent tweet. “I stand with the tens of thousands of Arab and Jewish citizens of Israel demonstrating for equal rights at the weekend in Tel Aviv.” Corbyn has come under fire from the U.K. Jewish community over his party refusing to fully adopt a definition of anti-Semitism which has been accepted by the other parties in Parliament.

Title: Trump approves largest-ever aid package to Israel, sets up showdown with Turkey8/13/2018 ● 10:53 PM U.S. President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on Monday, which includes $550 million in assistance to Israel and temporarily halts the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey. This comes amid tensions between the United States and Ankara, which is currently holding an American pastor hostage, among other political moves. The $717 billion measure includes a bipartisan measure honoring a decade-long memorandum of understanding between America and Israel, with the United States giving $3.8 billion annually to the Jewish state. The NDAA, titled the “John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for 2019,” authorizes funds for research and development pertaining to weapon-defense systems, including the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems told help Israel defend against missile and rocket threats. Additionally, the law provides $50 million for joint U.S.-Israeli work on counter-tunnel technology, which has emerged as a major security threat to Israel in recent years from the Palestinian terror group Hamas. A man walks near an Iron Dome missile-defense system near the city of Sderot in southern Israel on May 29, 2018. Photo by Yonatan Sindel/Flash90. The annual military blueprint also temporarily blocks the U.S. delivery of the F-35 fighter jets to Turkey in response to the detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson, whom the country accuses of participating in the failed 2016 coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Earlier this month, the United States slapped sanctions on two top Turkish government officials involved in Brunson’s detention. The White House also placed aluminum and steel tariffs on Turkey, and Trump said last Friday that he approved a doubling of those tariffs. The tariffs and sanctions have caused Turkey’s currency, the lira, to crash. Diliman Abdulkader, director of the Kurdish Project at the Endowment for Middle East Truth, helped advise lawmakers regarding the Turkey provision in the NDAA and supports the current U.S. measures against Turkey. “The F-35 is a big step in basically telling Turkey you’re not too big to fail,” Abdulkader told JNS. “Yes, they are a NATO ally, but the United States is also concerned for its own national security interests, and based on the rhetoric coming from Erdoğan, he seems to be threatening not only NATO interests but the United States as well.” An Israeli Air Force F-35 fighter jet flies during an air show at the Hatzerim Air Base in the Negev Desert, Dec. 29, 2016. Photo by Miriam Alster/Flash90. “[The] United States must adapt to the reality that we are not dealing with the same Turkey as in the past. Turkey under Erdogan is aggressive and contradicts American interests both in Europe and in the Middle East,” said Abdulkader. “Therefore, we have to change our foreign policy accordingly that will further isolate and pressure Turkey. We have to keep in mind all of Turkey’s internal and external problems are the doing of the Turkish government themselves not the United States.” Regarding U.S. sanctions and tariffs against Turkey, Abdulkader said that this pressure campaign cannot be limited to the country’s custody of Brunson. “Erdoğan’s hostage-taking of Americans to gain diplomatic leverage is one of many violations he has committed,” he said. “There are countless of human-rights violations by Turkey that must be considered part of the equation, including Turkish threats against Americans in Syria, the Kurds and, most recently, an attempt to raid and arrest American officials in Incirlik Air Base” in the city of Adana, Turkey. Bill to block access to international financial markets Aykan Erdemir, who served in the Turkish parliament from 2011 to 2015 and serves as a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told JNS that the relationship between America and Turkey goes beyond the F-35 jets. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with U.S. President Donald Trump at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2017. Credit: Official White House Photo by Shealah Craighead. “The first issue on the U.S.-Turkish relationship is [as] the economic crisis gets worse, as the bilateral crisis between the U.S. and Turkey deepens,” he said. “In the next few months to come, the more important question is Turkey’s bailout.” The Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a bill last month that would block Turkish access to international financial resources, such as the International Monetary Fund. Transferring the F-35s to Turkey would be “a concern,” Erdemir said, but it would be “a security matter, and the implications would not be immediate, whereas with the economic crisis and with access to international financial institutions, the consequences would be immediate because we’re talking week, if not, months.” The NDAA will need an appropriations bill to fund it. Such a measure already passed the Senate Appropriations Committee; its chairman, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), has been trying to get it on the chamber floor for a full vote in order to get it to the president before the fiscal year deadline at the end of September. The House of Representatives passed its appropriations bill last month. Any bill from the upper chamber would need to be reconciled with the House in conference committee negotiations

Title: Khamenei flat-out rejects Trump’s invitation for dialogue8/13/2018 ● 9:52 PM Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s unconditional offer on Monday to talk about relations between the two countries, as the U.S. reimposed sanctions last week on the regime, which is facing upheaval from civilian protesters. The Supreme Leader of Iran also blasted the Iranian government for mismanaging the country’s economy amid the U.S. sanctions, which were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. “I ban holding any talks with America,” Khamenei said on state TV, according to Reuters. “America never remains loyal to its promises in talks.” “America’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal is a clear proof that America cannot be trusted,” Khamenei added at a gathering of thousands of Iranians. His word is law in the theocratic regime. “The Supreme Leader is doing President Trump an enormous favor by showing the international community and the people of Iran that he has no interest in diplomacy,” Richard Goldberg, former deputy chief of staff and senior foreign-policy adviser to former Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, told JNS. “As the administration ratchets up its pressure campaign and insists on compliance with U.S. sanctions, this statement will become a helpful diplomatic talking point.” Khamenei lamented the re-imposed sanctions, which target Iran’s transactions in gold and other precious metals, in addition to its purchases of American dollars and the U.S. car industry. “More than the sanctions, economic mismanagement [by the government] is putting pressure on ordinary Iranians,” Khamenei said, according to state TV. “I do not call it betrayal, but a huge mistake in management.” Khamenei’s remarks come as the United States is expected to ratchet up additional sanctions later this year that bar Iran access to financial messaging services, known as the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT). Senior European officials want to protect Iran’s access to SWIFT, but the White House is considering sanctioning SWIFT officials if they maintain Iran’s utilization of the system, according to Axios. “Cutting off Iran from SWIFT is critical for a maximum pressure campaign to succeed,” said Goldberg, who was the lead Republican negotiator for a few rounds of sanctions targeting SWIFT and other aspects of the Iranian economy. “We saw the damage inflicted on Iran’s economy in 2012 when sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran were combined with a cut-off from SWIFT.” “It’s important to remember that returning to that level of sanctions isn’t the intended end point,” he continued. “It’s the intended starting point for pressure going forward. That’s why the Trump administration will most certainly use all its authorities to pressure SWIFT into compliance.” Regarding the latest protests in Iran, Goldberg said it is early to predict what will come of them. Thousands of Iranian citizens have been protesting across the nation, including in major cities such as Tehran, over the apparent and imminent crashing of its economy, which began after the first of two phases of the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions taking effect following Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran deal last May. Questions to ask, according to Goldberg, include “Will more people join the protests over time? Will security forces come to a point where they refuse to kill their fellow Iranians? Will the general population begin to coalesce around a credible plan for what might come next should the regime fall?” “These are all important questions that policymakers need to be asking right now,” said Goldberg.

Title: Tapping into the ‘Golden Age’ of cantorial music for the 21st century8/13/2018 ● 6:40 PM Aryeh Leib Hurwitz is attuned to all things musical. A chazzan (“cantor”) and ordained Chabad rabbi born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., he studied at yeshivahs around the world while honing his voice and performing skills. The 29-year-old father of nearly 3-year-old twins has been on stage in Berlin and Johannesburg. He has sung before NBA crowds. He can belt out familiar pieces from “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Les Misérables,” croon at weddings and headline a jazz band. And, of course, he sings in synagogue during the High Holidays in the classic tradition of chazzonus, the quasi-operatic Jewish music of more than a century ago—music that transports listeners back to a time before great human sound wasn’t accessible by the click of a button. Here, he shares a bit about himself and the Eastern European musical tradition that is his hallmark. Q: Is cantorial music entertainment, spiritual nourishment or both, and how so? A: In the 19th century, cantorial music was the only form of Jewish entertainment. You looked forward to going to the synagogue to hear your favorite cantor perform, and with that, receive spiritual nourishment. Of course, that changed significantly over the decades, in time and place. Today, cantorial music is an art performed globally on the High Holidays. However, its art is beautiful year-round, and still plays the role of both entertainment and spiritual nourishment in various communities around the globe. Q: How has cantorial music changed in the past two decades since the turn of the 21st century? A: The golden age of chazzonus was in the early 1900s. There’s been a major decline since the likes of Josef “Yossele” Rosenblatt, Moishe Oysher, Moshe Koussevitzky and so on. Having said that, since the turn of the century there has been a nice comeback unfolding. With cantorial music now available with the click of a button (YouTube) and people appropriating culture, there are many different occasions where cantorial music is on display. Q: What is its role in Jewish life? A: The cantor is the shliach tzibbur, the “representative of the community.” Their job is to pray to the Almighty on their behalf. Cantorial music is the tool that the chazzan uses to spiritually connect the congregant with the God. That’s why it’s largely associated with the High Holidays and life-cycle milestones. Q: Does cantorial music have a special role during the High Holidays? A: Yes. It’s the highest of holidays. The time to connect to God makes it all the more essential. On a technical level, the prayers are less known. So it’s important that the quarterback—aka, the cantor—knows the rules, the prayers and the songs. Cantor Aryeh Leib Hurwitz (left) performed at the Berliner Philharmonie in Germany, home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with a 70-piece orchestra. Q: Is cantorial music meant to affect the worshipper? Does it complement prayer, or is it singular in nature? A: Cantorial music is based in the essence of nusach ha’tefillah, the “modes of the prayers,” which were passed down generations since the time of the Temple in Jerusalem. There is holiness in the music. When used in its true form, it absolutely affects the worshipper, as it also compliments the prayer. Q: What is the voice range of a cantor? Are they mostly tenors? A: Most have been tenors, historically, like the “Cantors of the Golden Age.” I am a tenor. But today, it’s more common to be a baritone … I would say maybe 25 percent of cantors today are baritones. And, of course, within those general definitions are different types and ranges. Q: What is the difference between the concert chazzan and the synagogue chazzan? A: Let’s start with the important job of the synagogue chazzan. The chazzan is sincere, humble and with a sweet voice pours his heart out to the Almighty. The concert chazzan can be a true entertainer, or he can be a synagogue cantor giving a concert. Does the music fit with nusach ha’tefillah? Is it a piece that connects one spiritually? Or is it a piece that is a joy to listen to? The greats did both at a high level. Q: Do niggunim and cantorial music serve different purposes? A: Completely. Niggunim is Jewish music meant for everyone to join in and be inspired together. Cantorial niggunim is an art that is best done with the participants silent. Q: What does music mean to you and your religious life? A: Music is a tool to connect. Unlike many career musicians, for a religious Jew, music is another form of serving God, whether dance music, classical music or cantorial music. Q: What are your most memorable moments on stage? A: My most memorable moments were certainly singing as the very first cantor ever to perform a Jewish song in the main hall of one of the most prestigious halls in the world—the Berliner Philharmonie in Germany, home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra—with a 70-piece orchestra. I was also fortunate enough to perform in three cantorial concerts in Johannesburg, South Africa. And to perform the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” before two different NBA games for “Jewish Heritage Night” events: for the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City and the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center in New York City. Q: Who is your musical role model? A: So many … if I had to choose one: Moshe Koussevitzky. He served as a cantor in Vilna and Warsaw, escaping the Nazis with his family during the Holocaust by fleeing to the Soviet Union. They came to the United States in 1947; five years later, he became cantor of Temple Beth-El in Borough Park (Brooklyn). He was one of four brothers, all cantors. In December 1947, they sang together in a concert at Carnegie Hall. Q: Do strong voices run in families? A: They certainly can, yes. Parents, siblings, children can all have beautiful voices. I have a brother who’s a wedding singer. I come from a family with musical lines. But it is an art to be studied. The cantorial greats, they worked to refine their voices. Q: Do you have a favorite music city? A: Nashville, Tennessee. I have performed a few times there and will be going again. It’s an entire city that has an appreciation of and love for music—all music. I find that fascinating.

Title: Man charged with fraud for fixing synagogue’s bingo game8/13/2018 ● 10:15 PM (JTA) — The caller at a suburban New York synagogue’s bingo game has been charged with fraud for fixing the games. Neil Simon Gross, 71, turned himself into police last week after being charged with gaming fraud, according to Lohud.com, a local news site. Gross, who calls out the numbers at the Yorktown Jewish Center in Westchester County, allegedly took advantage of the position to change the outcome of games. Police were tipped off to the alleged crime and investigated Gross along with the New York State Gaming Commission. While the commission did not reveal the extent of Gross’ alleged crime, the felony charge implies that the value of the stolen cash exceeds $1,000. Gross is due in court in September. The Yorktown Jewish Center’s website said the bingo game was canceled this week. The post Man charged with fraud for fixing synagogue’s bingo game appeared first on Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Title: Why Spike Lee’s ‘BlacKkKlansman’ is a cautionary tale for 21st-century Jews8/13/2018 ● 9:40 PM “BlacKkKlansman” tells the story of two cops — a black and a Jew — infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan in 1972. (Screenshot from YouTube) Spoilers for “BlacKkKlansman” below. NEW YORK (JTA) — In 1965, two young Jewish men, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, were murdered along with black activist James Chaney by Ku Klux Klansmen in a Southern horror memorialized in the 1988 film “Mississippi Burning.” My own Jew-adjacent summer camp showed the film to us when we were about 12, with a non-Jewish camp director adding in an impassioned speech that while the days of the violent Klan had passed, it was our responsibility, as well-meaning white people, to eradicate casual racism. Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” initially shares his well-meaning optimism before dashing it in favor of a grimmer reality. The film, in which two cops — a black and a Jew — go undercover to infiltrate the Klan, is based on a true story whose racial hijinks may remind viewers of Dave Chappelle’s famous “black white supremacist” skit. Alec Baldwin opens “BlacKkKlansman,” set in 1972, with a surprise cameo as a white supremacist filming an infomercial. Dressed like a B-list Colonel Sanders, he repeatedly fumbles his condemnations of blacks and the “Jewish justices of the Supreme Court.” Lulling the viewer – perhaps only the naive white viewer – into a false state of comfort, Lee’s opening implies that organized white supremacy, as embodied by Baldwin’s character, is an antiquity of our American past to be laughed at rather than a contemporary movement to be feared. The first hour or so of the film, chock full of racial quips and legitimately funny moments, continues the purposeful misconception. Lee portrays white supremacists as sloppy and ignorant. It is only when Klan Grand Wizard and “National Director” David Duke (Topher Grace) arrives in Colorado Springs that the proverbial comedic hood comes off of “BlacKkKlansman,” revealing a bleaker plot indicative of a disquieting reality. The film, as Jewish writer David Klion put it, is “surprisingly fun for a while and then not fun at all.” “BlacKkKlansman” becomes not fun at all when Duke, speaking at a private KKK banquet, embarks on a campaign speech of sorts, telling his followers exactly what they want to hear about blacks, Jews and the like. The Klansmen and their wives and girlfriends soon watch, enthusiastically, D.W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation,” the 1915 film that Richard Brody of The New Yorker calls a “racist fabrication which had the immediate practical result of reinvigorating the Klan nationwide.” Lee intercuts the banquet scene with a visit to the Colorado College Black Student Union from a man named Mr. Turner (Harry Belafonte), who tells, in agonizing detail, the story of a lynching of his friend, Jesse Washington, noting that he hid in the attic to avoid being found while locals sold Washington’s body parts and celebrated his murder in postcards. (The lynching, which took place in Waco, Texas, is a true story). Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), the black cop ironically assigned to protect Duke against death threats, is, like Mr. Turner once was, hiding in an attic of sorts at the banquet – in a raised space, behind a small window, watching the disturbing scene unfold. It’s difficult to imagine any Hebrew school graduate watching the scene without thinking briefly of Anne Frank and her own temporary attic refuge from white supremacy. As the film grew darker, its references to President Donald Trump drew fewer laughs and more collective despondency from the sold-out theater where I saw the film. Anachronistic cries of “America first” and “Make America Great Again” mark nearly every Klan gathering, while every Klan space is plastered with Richard Nixon campaign paraphernalia. In the most obvious allusion to Trump, Stallworth’s white sergeant (Ken Garito) suggests that Duke’s attempts to mainstream white supremacy could eventually result in an American president who, through immigration, affirmative action and tax reform, will embody Klan values but make them palatable to the American public. “Politics,” Sergeant Trapp notes, is another way “to sell hate.” “America would never elect somebody like David Duke president,” Stallworth says. Trapp responds: “For a black man, you’re pretty naive.” Lee wants to shatter this naivete. “People become delusional and think they’re not black anymore because they are accepted — it’s the okey-doke,” Lee told Time magazine. “You can say that now, but they still think you’s a nigger.” Just as even the most naive viewer recognizes that America’s racist past is not separate from but directly tied to its present and future, so does the Jewish cop, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver). Earlier in the film, Zimmerman refuses to admit to Stallworth that he has “skin in the game.” Later he realizes that no matter what he does or how culturally accepted he may be, to the Klan he’s still a Jew – still a “kike.” “I never thought about it before,” Zimmerman confesses to Stallworth, reflecting on the fact that he was not raised particularly Jewish. After spending time with the Klan, who repeatedly reference yarmulkes and circumcision, even casually asking if a situation is “kosher,” he now admits “I’m thinking about it all the time.” While Stallworth, perhaps embodying contemporary black Americans, needs no reminder of his own vulnerability, Zimmerman, perhaps embodying contemporary Jewish Americans, does. As indicated by anti-Semitism’s central place in the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville and the movements behind it, contemporary Klan types haven’t forgotten about American Jews. In the closing moments of “BlacKkKlansman,” Stallworth and his love interest’s collective cozy contemplations of their future are interrupted by a Klan cross burning nearby. Moments later, viewers’ contemplation of America’s future is interrupted with disturbing real-life footage from the Charlottesville rally, complete with participants’ chants of “Jews will not replace us” and cutaways to Trump equivocating on the white supremacist violence. Eventually Lee provides a memorial to Heather Heyer, killed by a white supremacist who drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters. Lee ends the film by filling the screen with an upside-down American flag – a signal of distress. It’s an unmistakable comment: Everything in America is not OK, not only for blacks but also for Jews and countless others. It is perhaps a surprising gesture of solidarity with Jews from a director whose past portrayals of Jews were criticized as stereotypical and unflattering. Nevertheless, “BlacKkKlansman” is an alarm clock, telling Jews — who still need police protection at their places of worship – to wake up. “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when? And if not me, who?” asks black radical Kwame Ture (Corey Hawkins) at a rally during the film. The line is a paraphrase of Hillel the Elder. Title: If Israel has such bad PR, why does it remain so popular?8/13/2018 ● 9:33 PM Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu understands that Israel’s “hasbarah” can only get the country so far. (Illustration by Charles Dunst/JTA; photo: Michal Cizek/AFP/Getty) (JTA) — The first mention in JTA of the Hebrew word “hasbarah” was in 1988, at the height of the first intifada. The article focused on Israelis and American Jews and their deep concern that the media were distorting the unrest and showing the Israeli military in a bad light. The answer, interviewees agreed, was better “hasbarah” — a Hebrew word, explained the author (OK, it was me), “whose meaning falls somewhere between information and propaganda.” “Israel has never actually looked at hasbarah as an integral part of policymaking,” said Dan Pattir, a former press secretary to prime ministers Yitzhak Rabin and Menachem Begin. Fast forward 30 years. Writing last week in the Los Angeles Times, Noga Tarnapolsky makes a convincing case that Israel’s public diplomacy efforts are flawed, unprofessional, scattershot and out of touch. Critics tell her that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu relies too much on social-media videos to defend Israel. They say its military spokespeople are ill prepared to answer questions about controversial events, like May’s deadly riots on the border with Gaza. ““There is … no single authority that coordinates and supervises these various activities,” complains Michael Oren, who is (wait for it) Israel’s deputy minister in charge of public diplomacy. The critics, however, don’t make a convincing case why any of this matters. Complaints about Israel’s hasbarah efforts are as regular and ritualistic as the Jewish holidays. Without answers from a strong PR campaign, the theory goes, the litany of anti-Israel charges gains traction. But among whom? Israel remains hugely popular among the American public. According to Gallup, 64 percent of the U.S. population sympathizes with the Israelis over the Palestinians, and only 19 percent say they sympathize more with the Palestinians. Congress remains firmly pro-Israel. Yes, a Pew survey in January showed a wide partisan divide over Israel, with 79 percent of Republicans and only 27 percent of Democratic sympathizing more with Israel than with the Palestinians. But the poll questions forced respondents to choose between Israelis and Palestinians (why not both?), and the results may have reflected only the deeply partisan nature of American politics — not anything you can hasbarah away. Despite wide publicity and Jewish consternation, the Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment movement hasn’t taken root outside the far left. As of June, 25 states have enacted anti-BDS laws. In fact, the whole point of BDS is that Israel has a positive image that needs to be undermined. You wouldn’t know about BDS if celebrities didn’t regularly include Israel on their world tours. The charge of “pinkwashing” — that Israel touts its relatively progressive record on LGBT rights to distract the world from the occupation — targets what the BDS folk think is a positive and effective means of hasbarah — otherwise, why would they bother? And paradoxically, every charge of pinkwashing only reminds the casual reader of Israel’s strong LGBT record. Two kinds of critics, often overlapping, criticize Israel’s hasbarah. The first is convinced that the media have in it for Israel. Such critics also hold the mistaken notion that the media’s role is to tell a story as they would have it told. Coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is hardly perfect, and examples abound of stories becoming stories only when Palestinians are the victims, or headlines that ignore cause (a terror attack) for effect (the Israelis’ response). In general, however, Palestinians have a point when they complain that the media often shape the narrative according to an Israeli point of view, depicting Palestinian life with an Israeli gaze. If you want to see what coverage of the conflict would look like otherwise, read a pro-Palestinian website like Electronic Intifada or a far-left Israeli site like +972. It’s nothing like the Israel coverage you see in the mainstream media. The other kind of critic blames unpopular policy on bad hasbarah. Good hasbarah, they insist, could presumably have forestalled the brouhaha over the Israeli nation-state law (a brouhaha, I’d wager, that most Americans never even heard about). That story got legs not because of a bad marketing rollout, but because the law was a policy decision that fed directly into a perception that Israel’s right-wing government was growing less democratic and more nationalistic. Passage of the law capped a week in which the Knesset allowed the education minister to bar groups critical of government policies from speaking in public schools, made it harder for Palestinians to win land disputes and blocked single men and gay couples from having children through surrogacy. More broadly, Netanyahu’s close ties with President Donald Trump may be understandable and justifiable, as his outreach to European nationalists, but there is a political and PR price to be paid for such embraces. Netanyahu has good instincts for English-speaking audiences, and sometimes he realizes that a positive pitch can only get you so far. In the past few weeks, left-wing activists have complained that Israeli airport security have detained them and asked specifically about their activism and their political beliefs. On Monday, after the liberal Zionist writer Peter Beinart said he was stopped and interrogated, Netanyahu issued a statement saying it was an “administrative mistake,” adding that “Israel is the only country in the Middle East where people voice their opinions freely and robustly.” The latter statement is a staple of pro-Israel hasbarah. It’s a terrific policy, as long as it has the added benefit of being true. But when actions prove unpopular, PR won’t save you. The root meaning of hasbarah is “explanation,” not “alchemy.” The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of JTA or its parent company, 70 Faces Media. Title: Palestinian flags fly in Tel Aviv as Arabs protest controversial nation-state law8/13/2018 ● 8:03 PM Some protesters waved Palestinian flags like this one during a gathering in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square on Aug. 11, 2018, to protest the recent passage of Israel’s nation-state bill. (Mohammed Abed/AFP/Getty Images) TEL AVIV (JTA) — Tens of thousands of Israeli Arabs, some waving Palestinian flags, gathered in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square on Saturday evening to protest the recent passage of Israel’s nation-state bill enshrining the state’s Jewish character. At a protest organized by the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, an umbrella group representing Israeli-Arab civil society organizations, speakers railed against what they described as a law that formalized a racial hierarchy among Israeli citizens in which Arabs enjoyed a diminished legal status compared to Jews. Arabic, previously defined as an official language, is designated under the law has having “special status.” Defenders of the law counter that it does not undercut guarantees of equal status for all citizens enshrined in Israel’s Basic Laws, the functional equivalent of a constitution. Some protesters waved Palestinian flags, while others carried signs protesting “apartheid” and sang chants describing the law as fascist. The Higher Arab Monitoring Committee’s chairman, Mohammad Barakeh, called the green, red, black and white banners as “flag[s] of a proud nation” and declared that there would be another Nakba, or catastrophe, the Palestinians’ term for the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. Barakeh told The Times of Israel that while he had “asked the public not to bring [Palestinian] flags,” he “can’t control what people do.” While many protesters declared that “Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies,” others affiliated with the Arab Balad party were reported to have chanted “with spirit and blood we will free Palestine.” “Zionism has no meaning if it does not intend to create a society that strives for peace,” Hebrew University professor Eva Illouz, a Moroccan Jew, told the crowd, The Jerusalem Post reported. “Today is a historical moment because Jews and Arabs together are stating that they are protesting together for equality.” Knesset member Ayman Odeh, head of the Joint List, told the Israeli news site Ynet that the protesters had a “democratic and ethical message” and that a “democratic state must be a state for all its citizens.” Jewish politicians across the political spectrum, including opponents of the bill, expressed opposition to the use of Palestinian flags. “I can’t go to a protest where they are calling for the ‘right of return,’” said Labor chair Avi Gabbay. Yair Lapid, head of the centrist Yesh Atid party, likewise questioned the flags, asking on Twitter what would happen “to those who would try to march in the center of Ramallah with Israeli flags.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held up the flags as an example of why the law was needed in the first place. Speaking at the weekly Cabinet meeting on Sunday morning, Netanyahu said that “yesterday we saw PLO flags in the heart of Tel Aviv. We heard the calls: ‘With blood and fire we will redeem Palestine.’ Many of the demonstrators want to abrogate the Law of Return, cancel the national anthem, fold up our flag and cancel Israel as the national state of the Jewish people and turn it – as their spokespersons said – into an Israeli-Palestinian state, and others say: A state of all its citizens. “It is for precisely this that we passed the nation-state law. We are proud of our state, our flag and our national anthem. Israel is a Jewish and democratic state. The individual rights of its citizens are anchored very well in the basic laws and other laws. Now it is clearer than ever that the nation-state law is also necessary.” Senior representatives of Israel’s Druze minority also panned the flags, Ynet reported. “We are against the waving of the Palestinian flag. I think that it’s unnecessary,” said former Druze Knesset member Shachiv Shnaan. “If you protest because you want equality in your country, why wave flags of another state? But it isn’t anything new that Arab Israelis have a continued identity problem. They are torn between the national Palestinian identity and their real lives in Israel in partnership with the state.” More than 50,000 Druze and their supporters gathered in Tel Aviv last weekend for a protest against the law. Many members of the Druze community — whose members, like Jews, serve in the Israeli army and security forces — felt betrayed by the law, which they said fails to give them equality despite their loyalty to the state.
