DESANTIS NOMINEE FOR UWF BOARD SAYS WOMEN SHOULDN'T DELAY MOTHERHOOD FOR HIGHER
ED, CAREER

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — For years, political scientist Scott Yenor has
advocated for overhauling colleges and universities, which he has argued
undermine traditional American families by encouraging women to pursue careers
and put off childbirth.

Now Yenor may get a chance to implement his policy proposals after Florida Gov.
Ron DeSantis appointed him to the board of the University of West Florida, a
public school in Pensacola with about 14,000 students.

The Republican governor’s appointment of Yenor and four others to the UWF Board
of Trustees this week comes two years after DeSantis stacked the board of
another public school, New College of Florida, in what critics called a hostile
political takeover. Within weeks, New College’s new board fired the sitting
president and then replaced her with a former state lawmaker and ally of the
governor.

A professor at Boise State University, Yenor has written extensively on what he
sees as the dangers of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in higher
education as well as the declines of traditional marriage and birth rates in the
U.S. He’s also a former fellow at The Heritage Foundation, which proposed
Project 2025 as a policy blueprint for a hard-right turn in American government
and society.

Speaking at the National Conservatism Conference in 2021, Yenor detailed what he
sees as the “evils” of feminism, labeled “independent women” as “medicated,
meddlesome and quarrelsome” and decried colleges and universities as “the
citadels of our gynecocracy” — a form of government run by women.

“If we want a great nation, we should be preparing young women to become
mothers,” Yenor said, “not finding every reason for young women to delay
motherhood until they are established in a career or sufficiently independent.”

Yenor argued that higher education “delays growing up,” saying that college and
universities are “indoctrination camps” that society should de-emphasize in
order to make progress on “family matters.”

“Every effort must be made not to recruit women into engineering, but rather to
recruit and demand more of men who become engineers. Ditto for med school and
the law and every trade,” Yenor said.

“If every Nobel Prize winner is a man, that’s not a failure. It’s kind of a
cause for celebration,” he added.

Yenor did not respond to questions from The Associated Press about his past
statements, but said he supports DeSantis’ education agenda.

“An education system shapes the culture. Our current education system, with its
divisive DEI policies and ideological monoculture, has produced an ever-worse
culture,” Yenor told the AP in an email, saying Florida’s education system is
better off because of DeSantis’ policies.

Chasidy Hobbs, an Earth and environmental science instructor and president of
UWF’s faculty union, called the comments “disheartening” and “offensive.”

“My most important work of my life was being a mother,” she said, “while also
working as a professional woman in a career that I find almost as important as
motherhood — to help the future generation learn to think for themselves.” But
she added that she looked forward to working with the new board.

Julia Friedland, the governor’s deputy press secretary, said the new board
members will “break the status quo” and “help refocus the university on the core
mission of education.”

She did not respond to questions about Yenor’s previous statements on women in
higher education.

In articles and speeches, Yenor has labeled DEI as a “grave and gathering danger
to national unity and state governance,” called for eliminating certain
disciplines like African Diaspora Studies and said even departments of History
and English could be on the chopping block. He’s also advocated for
sex-segregated education and called for banning state employees from collecting
data on the basis of race or sex.

Yenor and the other new appointees to UWF’s 13-member board must be confirmed by
the Florida Senate.

This story rewrites the headline to correct that Yenor is advocating for
prioritization of motherhood.

'TROUBLING AND ILLEGAL': ACLU SUES DESANTIS FOR FAILING TO HOLD SPECIAL
ELECTIONS

Florida's chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is suing Republican Gov.
Ron DeSantis for failing to call special elections for two empty state
legislature seats. The ACLU filed its lawsuit Thursday on behalf of voters in
Brevard and Santa Rosa counties, according to the organization. The vacancies
arose when state Rep. Joel Rudman and state Sen. Randy Fine announced their
upcoming resignations on Nov. 25 and Nov. 26, respectively, to run in special
congressional elections after Republicans Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz were tapped
for President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet. Rudman’s resig...

TRUMP WANTS TO CHANGE COLLEGES NATIONWIDE. GOP-LED STATES OFFER A PREVIEW

By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH and JOCELYN GECKER of The Associated Press, WILLIESHA
MORRIS of AL.com, and KEVIN RICHERT of Idaho Education News Nearly a decade ago,
intense protests over racial injustice rocked the University of Missouri’s
flagship campus, leading to the resignation of two top administrators. The
university then hired its first-ever vice chancellor for inclusion, diversity
and equity. Tensions were so high that football players were threatening a
boycott and a graduate student went on hunger strike. Today, the entire
diversity office is gone, an example of changes sweeping universities in states
led by conservatives, and a possible harbinger of things to come nationwide. “I
feel like that is the future, especially for the next four years of Trump’s
presidency,” said Kenny Douglas, a history and Black studies major on the campus
in Columbia, Missouri.

ACLU SUES FLORIDA GOV. DESANTIS FOR NOT CALLING SPECIAL ELECTIONS FOR STATE
HOUSE AND SENATE SEATS

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit
Thursday accusing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis of failing to fulfill his
constitutional obligation to call special elections for two seats in the state
House and Senate. The seats in question were vacated in November by state Rep.
Joel Rudman and state Sen. Randy Fine, who resigned to run for two congressional
seats that opened up when President-elect Donald Trump named U.S. Reps. Matt
Gaetz and Mike Waltz as Cabinet picks. Shortly after Gaetz and Waltz resigned,
DeSantis called for special congressional elections with a Jan. 28 primary and
an April 1 general. He has yet to set elections for the state-level openings,
however. “I don’t understand why the governor resists calling special elections
in a timely manner. From Jeb Bush to Rick Scott, past governors moved quickly to
ensure the people retained their voice in government. DeSantis’s refusal to do
so is both troubling and illegal,” said Nicholas Warren, a staff attorney for
the ACLU of Florida.

LIP READER REVEALS TRUMP TOLD OBAMA THEY WILL ‘FIND A QUIET PLACE’ TO DISCUSS
‘MATTER OF IMPORTANCE’ AT JIMMY CARTER FUNERAL

WASHINGTON — Former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump had
what appeared to be a warm conversation Thursday ahead of former President Jimmy
Carter’s funeral , but a professional lip reader told The Post their smiles and
laughter belied more serious substance. Trump, 78, possibly wary of cameras
facing the pair as they sat shoulder to shoulder, cautioned Obama, 63, that they
would have to “find a quiet place” later in the day to discuss a “matter of
importance,” according to forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman. It’s unclear what
precisely that conversation would entail, but Obama and Trump...

Wow, the GOP is doubling down on ignorance. Any woman who would vote red must
desire to be barefoot, perpetually pregnant, and subservient to a man.

So Mr. Yenor, how are married couples supposed to pay their bills? Are you do
out of touch with reality that you fail to see both parties are working, and are
just getting by, and some, having to take a part time job. And having a child,
add more to the monthly budget. You gotta love these politicians in their lofty
perches telling people what should or shouldn’t be, when they haven’t a clue.
Tell you what, let Tallahassee work on lowering costs so people can have a
choice.

this offensive on do many levels. we as women (or men) can do or be anything we
want to be and can be more than one thing. if a man can be dad AND pursue higher
education and a career, why does it have to be higher education OR motherhood
for women? I am a happy mother who lives my child but I have a college degree
and a graduate degree neither of which have prevented me from being a mom. and
women fo delay motherhood for many reasons not just education and career.
perhaps they are delaying to save up money first since having children is very
expensive but I suspect this guy is totally out of touch.

are in school full time YOU take classes. Do you know how much it’s costing us

We are not living in the 40s or 50s anymore. Both the males and females should
have determined and established path thru life before committing to having and
raising children. Aside from having enough income to live fairly comfortable,
they each have a fallback position should something happen that causes a break
between them. I think it's very important for each of them to understand they
are capable of providing for themselves, if the need be.My sequence is
education, life, and then family. This gives each of you time to go through the
ups and downs of becoming responsible for raising a family.
