Program in Creative Writing at UMD in the late 1980s. The inaugural speaker is 2018 MacArthur Fellow John Keene, who is Distinguished Professor and department chair at Rutgers University–Newark. Keene is the author, co-author and translator of several books, including the 2022 National Book Award-winning collection “Punks,” and “Counternarratives,” published by New Directions in 2015 and Fitzcarraldo Editions in 2016. Keene will read from his work on Nov. 14 and deliver a lecture on Nov. 15. To learn more about the lecture series and events, please go to the link in our bio. Check out these creations from the Oct. 15 community cartonera workshop co-sponsored by umd_booklab and umd_lan! English Ph.D. candidate and BookLab graduate assistant dadadiana_protozoa collaborated with Claudia Barragan of the UMD Latinx Alumni Association to put together this workshop in honor of Latinx Heritage Month. Cartonera is based on a Latin American tradition of creating books out of bound recycled cardboard that originated during the 2002 economic crisis in Latin America and has since become global. The movement brought together artists, writers and laborers from recycling plants to publish a wide variety of art and texts, from reprinted canonical works to local emergent art. "It's a democratic medium that became a way for lower income people to afford books and become involved in handmade independent presses. The role of the workshop is especially important, which is why it was exciting to hold that at UMD. We opened it up to everybody getting a chance to bind their books and paint them." —Diana Proenza This Thursday, hear about the smart dissertation research of LWR graduate student Erin Green and umdcommdept student Carolyn Robbins.
