Surprise! Google updates Pebble App.

Early Kickstarter darling and smartwatch pioneer Pebble was purchased by Fitbit
which ended support back in 2018. Google recently bought Fitbit, and two days
ago it updated the official Pebble App to provide compatibility with the new
Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The app is no longer hosted on the Play Store but the
APK is signed using the official Pebble keys for an easy update. Good on ya
Goog.

“Go to the App Store.”

When the Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern asked why there isn’t a calculator
app on the iPad, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vp of worldwide marketing, said
you should just download a (presumably non-scammy) third-party one.

Apple’s getting fond of these types of answers; CEO Tim Cook recently responded
to a question about adopting RCS by jokingly telling someone to buy his mom an
iPhone.

“Where did the Tweeters Go?”

Internal Twitter research seen by Reuters indicates that the number of “heavy
tweeters,” which is already low, is in “absolute decline.”

> These “heavy tweeters” account for less than 10% of monthly overall users but
> generate 90% of all tweets and half of global revenue. Heavy tweeters have
> been in “absolute decline” since the pandemic began, a Twitter researcher
> wrote in an internal document titled “Where did the Tweeters Go?”

ShakeAlert appears to be working as designed.

An earthquake just before noon that occurred near San Jose has alerted many
phones in the Bay Area, which received warning notifications from the
recently-rolled out ShakeAlert system.

It’s unclear how much detection came from Android devices, but Google CEO Sundar
Pichai said his notification arrived before the actual rumbling did.

Trunk-or-treat gets an EV upgrade.

I grew up in the Midwest, but I still had no idea about this phenomenon of
people dressing up their car’s trunks to look like monsters and then filling
them with candy for the little trick-or-treaters. So I was delighted to see that
EV owners are now doing the same, but with their vehicle’s frunks. Tesla owners
do it, and now so do the Ford Mustang Mach-E owners. Maybe skip the F-150
Lightning, though? I doubt most kids could reach that high.

Did ByteDance push out TikTok’s security chief?

That’s the question posed by a new report from Forbes, which says that an
internal security team at ByteDance — TikTok’s Beijing-based parent — ran
investigations into a US-based security leader that may have contributed to his
departure last month. This is the same team that Forbes reported on last week,
saying they planned to monitor the location of specific American citizens.

Check your candy! You might find Doom running in your Milky Way.

Okay yes, there’s been a meme for ages now of ludicrous things found in candy
that riffs off the long-time urban legend of drugs and needles in Halloween
candy. But someone actually put a tiny computer in a candy bar that runs the
MS-DOS iteration of Doom.
