House Democrats on Tuesday elected Rep. Gerry Connelly (D-Virginia) over Rep.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) to be the party’s top member on the
powerful House Oversight and Accountability Committee, sticking with a veteran
amid a broader shake-up aimed at taking on the second Trump administration.

In the run-up to the vote, younger lawmakers challenged ranking Democratic
members who have led their committees for years, appearing less concerned with
seniority and more willing to nudge out elder statesmen to make sure they have
the sharpest leaders in place to tussle with President-elect Donald Trump and
his allies.
