U.S. Population Just Had Its Largest One-Year Increase In History

Cities in the South continued to report the largest population growth in the
entire country last year, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census
Bureau, with Texas alone accounting for eight of the 15 fastest-growing cities
in the region.

The fastest-growing city among the ones with a population of 20,000 or more was
Celina, Texas, whose population grew by 26.6 percent in 2023—more than 53 times
the growth rate of the country, 0.5 percent.

The other 14 fastest-growing cities were Fulshear, Texas (+25.6 percent);
Princeton, Texas (+22.3 percent); Anna, Texas (+16.9 percent); Lathrop,
California (+13.6 percent); Centerton, Arkansas (+11.2 percent); Haines City,
Florida (+10.8 percent); Georgetown, Texas (+10.6 percent); Prosper, Texas
(+10.5 percent); Forney, Texas (+10.4 percent); Kyle, Texas (+9.0 percent);
Lebanon, Tennessee (+8.9 percent); Fort Mill, South Carolina (+8.8 percent);
Leesburg, Florida (+8.7 percent); and Athens, Ohio (+8.6 percent).



The biggest population increase in the U.S. last year was reported by San
Antonio, Texas, which added 21,970 residents between July 1, 2022, and July 1,
2023—more than any other city in the U.S. The city's population in 2023 was
estimated at 1,495,295—nearing the 1.5 million milestone.

The other cities with the largest numeric increase within the same period were
Fort Worth, Texas (+21,365 residents); Charlotte, North Carolina (+15,607);
Jacksonville, Florida (+14,066); Port St. Lucie, Florida (+13,169); Atlanta,
Georgia (+12,052); Houston, Texas (+11,669); Georgetown, Texas (+9,250); Celina,
Texas (+9,110); Raleigh, North Carolina (+8,872); Fulshear, Texas (+8,678);
Washington, D.C. (+8,023); Denton, Texas (+7,914); Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
(+7,589); and Cape Coral, Florida (+7,540).

"The population growth across the South in 2023 was driven by significant
numeric and percentage gains among its cities," Crystal Delbé, a statistician in
the Census Bureau's Population Division, said in a statement. "Thirteen of the
15 fastest-growing cities were in the South, with eight in Texas alone."

Large cities in the Northeast and Midwest also reversed previous declines in
2023. Cities with populations of 50,000 or more grew by an average of 0.2
percent in the Northeast and by 0.1 percent in the Midwest, after declines of
0.3 percent and 0.2 percent in 2022. Large cities in the West grew by an average
of 0.2 percent between 2022 and 2023, while in the South by 1.0 percent.

The 15 most populous cities in the country, as of 2023, were:

 3.  Chicago, Illinois (2,664,452)
 4.  Houston, Texas (2,314,157)
 5.  Phoenix, Arizona (1,650,070)
 6.  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1,550,542)
 7.  San Antonio, Texas (1,495,295)
 8.  San Diego, California (1,388,320)
 9.  Dallas, Texas (1,302,868)
 10. Jacksonville, Florida (985,843)
 11. Austin, Texas (979,882)
 12. Fort Worth, Texas (978,468)
 13. San Jose, California (969,655)
 14. Columbus, Ohio (913,175)
 15. Charlotte, North Carolina (911,311)
