Hi folks, I'm sharing a successful upgrade experience here, to thank the helpful
information in this forum.

My old GTX 1070 in an AORUS Gaming Box progressively deteriorated and eventually
caught fire after serving for three years. Thinking about reusing the box, I
decided to swap the broken card with a recently released card.

My eventual decision is the ZOTAC RTX 4060 SOLO, which is around 17cm long.
Although the 40 series is commonly seen as garbage, it is still a decent
performance boost from the 1070. It's basically a plug-and-play experience,
except for manually installing the graphics card driver.

I tested Baldur's Gate 3 briefly with 4k all max and DLSS (performance), and the
fps was around 50. The card temperature was kept between 50~55 ℃, thanks to the
low TDP of 40 series IMO.

Previously I tried MSI RTX 4060 Ti VENTUX 2x, whose length is ~198mm. The length
is exact to fit in the box, so I thought it would be good. However, the 24-pin
motherboard connector blocked the side corner of MSI RTX 4060 Ti's backplate. I
did a (inaccurate) measurement and it suggested that even if I remove the
plastic backplate and use an angle adaptor, the metal heatsink still blocks the
motherboard connector.

I also considered Palit RTX 4060 Ti StormX as an alternative, but just could not
convince myself to spend 50% more money (~$150 more) for a <20% performance
boost.

Did you change the original PSU of the aorus gaming box?

I tried to upgrade mine from gtx 1080 to Asus rtx 3060 Ti mini only to find the
original PSU won't work (and i can't justify if the PSU upgrade is worth the
money).

@iphone8gb, I checked the PSU in the box and it's 450W. The 4060 power draw is
115W maximum, lower than the original 1070Ti's 180W. I don't know about 3060Ti
but it seems to work.

I am also thinking about this upgrade. My system is a Sonnet Breakaway 350 with
1070. The 4060 with its relatively low power consumption should not be too much
for this box.

Can you tell me something about the fan noise of your 4060 and how much
performance gain did you get comparing to the 1070?

@bexus, The fan noise is pretty low, especially when compared with the original
1070 in the box. The temperature is around 50°C in my gaming experiences, so the
low noise is quite reasonable. 

 

I didn't do a fair performance comparison since my old 1070 had degraded much,
and eventually caught fire. However, on paper, there is a ~50% performance gain.
I can only say that it performs much better compared to my old experiences.

@pickspeng, how's the experience with that new card? Can the system
automatically identify that aorus gaming box when you restart / cold boot from
beginning?

 

My gaming box sometimes can't identified by system with cable connected when i
restart / doing cold boot from beginning (and sometimes must turn off the box
for a while first or reconnect the TB3/TB4 cable again to my notebook until the
system identify it).

@iphone8gb, I believe the problems caused by the box motherboard are still
there, i.e., sometimes need to replug the TB3 cable & sometimes cold booting
does not work. I used the box occasionally with hot plug-in, so I didn't find
much to complain about. For the rare cases for me to cold boost the system /
restart, it worked, though the sample size is too small here.

Thanks for posting this! I have a GTX 1080 in an Aorus Gaming Box and want to
upgrade to a RTX 4060. Last year I considered the Asus RTX 3060 Ti mini, but
couldn't justify the price to performance ratio. I also looked at the same cards
you did. I almost pulled the plug on the MSI GPU but kinda glad someone tried
installing it first, so thanks!

What firmware are you running on the Aorus Gaming Box?

@obake78, The MSI 4060 Ti barely fits in the 1070 box, so I guess it will fit
perfectly in the 1080 box. I think adding 30% cost for 20% performance gain is
valid since it has dual fans and it will accompany you for 2-4 years. I would
love to have a 1080 box with 4060 Ti in it :-). With an 1080 box, you may also
consider dual fan 4070, whose shortest version is around 22.6 cm, though I
didn't test.

@iphone8gb, The Asus RTX 3060ti Dual Mini OC V2 does work with the Aorus Gaming
Box. I switched mine from a GTX 1070. I had read somewhere on this forum (It was
probably a build by @itsage where he uses an external power supplied mini-PC)
that if you happen to use the same psu setup in the AGB along with the RTX
3060ti upgrade with a PC that has an external power supply (I use a Mac Mini
2018) it would work fine as the there would be no power draw from the AGB to
power the system. Thus, the RTX 3060ti can draw required power from the AGB's
PSU.

Also, both AGB 1080 and ABG 1070 use the same PSU 450W, so it should work fine
in both enclosures:
