VEGANS TO PROTEST AGAINST ‘EXPLOITATIVE’ DAIRY INDUSTRY IN MANCHESTER TOMORROW

Campaigners will be taking a stand in over 100 towns and cities across the UK.

Emily Sergeant - 26th January 2024

Vegans are set to stage protests against the “exploitative” dairy industry in
Manchester city centre this weekend.

Organised by one of the UK’s leading vegan charities, Viva!, this Saturday is
one of several ‘Days of Action’ that take place throughout the year, and it’ll
see activists assemble on high streets in dozens of major cities and towns
nationwide in an attempt to “educate members of the public about the modern
dairy industry”.

They’ll also be encouraging people to opt for plant-based milk alternatives
where possible, and sharing the benefits of switching to them.

Protests will be taking place in over 100 towns and cities across the UK –
including here in Manchester.

Campaigners will be taking a stand outside Boots on Market Street in Manchester
city centre this Saturday 27 January from 1-4pm to hand out leaflets, hold
placards, and have “friendly open conversations” with people about why they
should consider becoming vegan.

Viva! says its ‘Days of Action’ were set up after the charity conducted a recent
undercover investigation into Home Farm – a Red Tractor-approved dairy farm that
supplies milk to Freshways, which in turn, supplies milk to Costa Coffee.

The charity says it found cows at Home Farm that were emaciated, lame, and
struggling to walk, while others were manhandled, slapped, and shoved, and some
were even visibly-injured or in shackles.

But despite the shocking revelations from the investigation, and what Viva! has
called a “mountain of evidence indicating breaches of animal welfare laws”, Home
Farm is continuing to deny any wrongdoing, according to the charity, and Red
Tractor claims that Home Farm abides by their standards.

“After seeing first-hand the despicable conditions that these poor cows and
calves are being kept in at Home Farm, I knew Viva! had to act,” said Viva!’s
founder and director Juliet Gellatley ahead of Saturday’s protests in
Manchester.

“It was heart-rending to see these gentle curious animals being treated so
badly, so that’s why we’re taking to the streets to educate the public on what
the dairy industry is really like.

“We’ll be having frank and positive conversations with people about where their
food comes from, as well as giving out vegan samples to show that they do not
need to rely on this cruel and exploitative industry, or compromise on taste.”

WHO IS MAN CITY’S NEW WONDERKID, CLAUDIO ECHEVERRI, AND WHY HAS HE BEEN DUBBED
‘THE NEXT MESSI’?

Danny Jones

It’s been a relatively quiet January transfer window across the board, as it can
often be for many teams, but Manchester City has completed another bit of
exciting business as they officially announced the signing of so-called
‘wonderkid’ Claudio Echeverri — but who is he?

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder’s move from Argentine giants River Plate
was confirmed on Thursday, 25 January, with Man City confirming that he will be
loaned straight back to the club until this time next year.

Operating as an attacking midfielder, it’s fair to say that not only do the
Blues have plenty of stars that play in the position but any new signing, no
matter how senior, would struggle to find their way into that well-oiled
machined.

Being given a contract until 2028 on a deal worth around £12.5 million plus
add-ons despite only just turning 18, it’s fair to say City are putting a lot of
faith in the highly-promising prospect but why exactly is he being so highly
thought of at such a young age?

>
> Claudio has signed a contract until June 2028 but will remain at River before

Claudio Echeverri signs for Manchester City.

For starters, it’s worth noting that some of his closest admirers have dubbed
him ‘the next Lionel Messi‘, and not just because he’s young and a fellow
compatriot.

Playing in an advanced role and predominantly as a classic number 10, the
parallels are obvious and given his calmness and composure in front of goal, it
didn’t take long for fans and pundits to turn the marriage of nationality,
position, goalscoring and a fair amount of skill into the excitable comparison.

With a penchant for dribbling and having already captained Argentina’s youth
side to the semi-finals of the U17 World Cup late last year, he’s already had a
taster of having the weight of a nation’s hopes on his shoulders in some
capacity. That’s the kind of character that should take to the Premier League
well.

Scoring nine in six across the tournament, he bagged a hattrick in the quarters
against Brazil before they lost on penalties to Germany, earning himself the
chance to train with the first-team squad on a number of occasions.

At club level, despite only making six senior appearances for River Plate, he’s
already won two trophies with them — the Argentine Primera Division and the
Trofeo de Campeones — registering an assist within just four cameo appearances
coming off the bench.

Speaking to Sky Sports, South American football expert Tim Vickery, made another
key comparison, stating that “Echeverri is taking a similar path as Julián
Álvarez: River Plate and Argentina to Manchester City and England – but with
significant differences.

“Alvarez went at the age of 22 as a consolidated Argentina international and as
the best player in Argentine football.

“Echeverri has only just turned 18 and we’ve hardly seen him in senior Argentine
football. Just six games with most of those off the substitutes’ bench. It’s the
same journey but with a very different route map.”

Going on to caveat that although dubbing him the next Messi might be getting
carried away at this stage, he did insist that the youngster’s “promise is
huge”, highlighting his “real pace and changes of pace, changes of rhythm, real
knowledge of where to hurt the opposition and attacking space”, in particular.

The consensus seems to be that he’s Claudio Echeverri is definitely one of the
future and potentially a talent to build around in the long term and,
thankfully, his loan move straight back to his previous club will allow him to
keep playing more regular football just as Álvarez did before arriving at the
Etihad.

With Kalvin Phillips having just been loaned to West Ham from City in search of
minutes after missing valuable months due to being simply kept out by such a
wealth of talent in the middle of the park, Pep Guardiola and his staff
certainly won’t want to risk a similar situation.

One thing’s for sure, he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

MCDONALD’S IS ADDING TWO NEW LIMITED-EDITION PINK DESSERTS TO ITS MENU NEXT
MONTH

Emily Sergeant

McDonald’s is launching a new menu full of limited-edition treats next month,
and there’s an “unmissable duo” of desserts on the lineup.

Oh, and it’s an “unmissable duo” of pink desserts, no less.

Apparently set to “captivate the taste buds” of fast food fans across the UK, it
won’t be long before Maccies lovers will get to tuck into the KitKat Ruby
Chocolate McFlurry, and the Raspberry and White Chocolate Pie, as the two
brand-new sweet treats will soon be available from McDonald’s restaurants
nationwide.

A pink twist on the Nestlé classic chocolate bar, the KitKat Ruby Chocolate
McFlurry is made up of soft dairy ice cream swirled with Ruby Chocolate, covered
KitKat pieces and wafer bites, and topped with a sweet raspberry sauce.

If raspberry isn’t really your think though, don’t worry, as you can just keep
it simple with the return of the KitKat Milk Chocolate McFlurry instead.

And if a pink KitKat McFlurry doesn’t make life rose-tinted enough for you as it
is, you can pair it up with the all-new Raspberry and White Chocolate Pie too –
which is described as being an indulgent crispy pink pastry filled with a smooth
white chocolate ganache and raspberry compote.

The duo of desserts will officially be on the McDonald’s menu nationwide from
Friday 9 February for a limited time only.

For anyone keen to get on the action a little earlier though, you can download
the McDonald’s App for exclusive access two days before they arrive in store on
7 and 8 February.

It’s not just those with a sweet tooth that are being catered for with the
upcoming menu reshuffle either, as there’s also a couple of returning
fan-favourite burgers and massively-popular sides making a long-awaited comeback
too.

It’s already been revealed that the iconic Breakfast Wrap will be available to
tuck into from Wednesday 7 February, after it spent four long years off the
menu.

The breakfast classic’s return also comes after thousands of fans put their name
to several petitions calling for its comeback.

So, as you can probably tell, people were pretty chuffed to hear they’ll be able
to order it again.

Alongside the Breakfast Wrap and the two new desserts, the fast food chain has
announced that both the Big Tasty and the Big Tasty with Bacon will be making a
“triumphant return”, as well as the beloved Mozzarella Dippers – which will be
available either as a side of three, or in a Sharebox of nine, accompanied by a
tangy salsa dip.
