INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION OF NURSES FROM PAKISTAN

May 7, 2022 – 8:16 PM | Be the first to comment

Migration of nurses from the developing countries to developed countries is
increasing day by day due to the shortage of nurses and quality care
requirements (Adkoli, 2006). Registered nurses shortage is a serious issue
throughout the world. Developed countries like Canada, France, Australia,
Ireland, Germany, United States and United Kingdom are facing the shortage of
nurses because of the increased demand and decreased supply of nurses (Oulton ,
2006). According to the 2008 population census there are 78,698 nurses and the
nurse patient ratio is 1:400 while the international nurse patient ratio is 1:35
(WHO, 2013). All countries around the world are mostly suffering from the
shortage of nurses, but due to the COVID 19 pandemic the demand is highly
increased because of the suffering of people all over the world due the Corona
virus or COVID 19 pandemic. Pakistan is suffering from the same level of
pandemic and the demand for nurses is increasing day by day both in public as
well as in private sectors. In 2020 and 2021 the Qatar and Kuwait demand for
nurses increased due to which they need nurses from all over the world and
especially from Pakistan, due to which migration of nurses from Pakistan to
other countries and especially Qatar and Kuwait is increasing.

Nursing is a highly demanding profession globally, and that’s why the majority
of foreign countries need skilled and professional nurses and that’s why they
are producing better opportunities, which attract nurses from all the developing
countries, and Pakistan is one of them. Pakistan is producing high skilled
nurses, but they are not satisfied from their job in Pakistan due to poor
nursing image, low attention of respect, low salary packages, and poor working
conditions. Furthermore, due to shortage of nurses in Pakistan, nurses are
suffering from fatigue and burnout (Hussain, & Afzal, 2015 ).

The other reason for migration of nurses from Pakistan is the COVID 19 pandemic
which has affected the entire world, because nurses are the frontline health
workers who are fighting with disease on a daily basis. Due to COVID 19 pandemic
most of the nurses have lost their lives and majority of the nurses left the job
due to hectic job fatigue, burnout and especially because of the fear of
catching the corona virus disease. Furthermore, the coronavirus patients are
highly effected and are kept in isolation, due to the high risk of spread of the
disease, due to which a nurse can attend and take care of only one patient. This
has caused nurses’ shortage, and that’s why they need more skilled nurses for
their hospitals. Countries like, Abu Dhabi, Australia, Canada and United States
of America are the interested countries and are offering very attractive
packages for them (Kline,  2003: Pittman, Aiken, & Buchan, 2007). Along with
these, Qatar And Kuwait are inviting Pakistani nurses during this COVID
pandemic. That’s why Pakistani nurses are migrating to other foreign countries
to make their future bright. Pakistani hospitals should increase nurse’s
packages. Pakistani nursing council should reform the policies and the hospitals
should apply better management practices to improve the working environment to
retain the nurses.

The main reasons of Pakistani nurses migrating to other countries or abroad are
basically related to contentment of human needs, safety and security needs, and
self-esteem. Because of the poor working conditions, low salary packages, poor
nursing image, and burnout in Pakistan, the nurses are moving abroad .The
nursing council needs to reform policies for retaining nurses and better
management practices could improve the working environment and thus retention of
nurses.
