Organizers of a monthly job fair are inviting striking UAW members to attend the
next one in Southfield if they need to supplement their strike pay.

The Michigan Career Expo is a monthly job fair produced by the non-profit Hired
In Michigan Community Empowerment, a 501(c)(3).

“We wanted to let strikers know that the 50 employers represented at the
Michigan Career Expo support them,” said C.J. Eason, the Hired in Michigan’s
community outreach president, adding that those who need to supplement their
$500-a-week strike can take temporary jobs.

“The reality is a lot of autoworkers getting strike pay may not have enough to
pay all their bills so we wanted them to know about this event,” she said.

She said the jobs range from truck driving to customer service and
administrative positions as well as manufacturing. Hourly pay rates range from
$15 to $25 or more for specialty positions.

“The career fair is taking place regardless,” she said. “But there are employers
that support what the strikers are doing. It’s not crossing the picket line,
none of them are doing that. We just have employers struggling to find people
and are willing to take on temporary, part-time workers.”

The UAW requires striking members to participate by picketing or working in
other areas to get strike pay. The $500-a-week pay starts on the eighth day of
the strike, according to the union’s website. Any striker who earns $500 or more
from an outside job will not get strike pay, but the UAW will continue to pay
the striking worker’s medical and prescription drug expenses, such as COBRA
payments.
