* Home * * * * * * * * * * MUSIC ARTIST BIO Equal Creatures has been building their dedicated Atlanta fanbase during the last two years with their raw, intimate, and dynamic sound. Live performers first, they are known for their infectious onstage energy. Each member brings a diverse range of musical influences to the project, resulting in genre-bending songs that create Equal Creatures' singular sound. They have made a musical home for themselves in Atlanta, presently a regular act at 529 and The Earl in East Atlanta Village, the central location for the pulse of the city’s local music scene. As they continue to build their fanbase, they are consistently asked to open for established touring artists from various genres, including The Worriers, Thelma and the Sleaze, The Indigo Girls, and The Amy Ray Band. With a growing number of regional shows, Equal Creatures is currently pursuing opportunities to build their national and international audience in the coming years. The band was birthed during the pandemic from a collection of songs lead singer and songwriter Laurie Ray had in draft form, songs inspired by Ray’s roots in grunge, Americana, and indie-pop. In their search for a collaborator to finish these demos, Ray connected with Josh Mousie (lead guitarist). The two of them found immediate, mutual inspiration from their creative partnership, and in the months that followed, they completed drafts of the songs that would later become their first EP. Adding drummer Sam Horwitz and bassist Athieno Nwgowe, the original four-piece polished these songs, played dozens of shows in Atlanta, and recorded and released their “Prey Animal” EP, a five-song release that explores queer identity, the isolation of love and loss, and living in the wake of traumatic experiences. Emotional and raw, these five songs were often dubbed sadcore or bubble grunge. Two years on, Equal Creatures is a staple in the Atlanta indie-rock music scene. March of 2024 marked the release of their first full-length album, “Everything that Hurts,” a noticeable sonic maturation from their first release. One crucial development that made this possible was the addition, in 2023, of synth player and background vocalist Laura Wilson. Filling out their sound and adding earworm harmonies, the band developed a more atmospheric and electronic sound with Wilson, and are now likened to bands such as The Beths, The Cranberries, Pillow Queens, and Beach House. “Everything that Hurts” is a colorful collection of ten songs that examine grief, love, lust, heartache and heartbreak, mania, and depression. The band always has an eye to the future and the evolution of their sound. They are currently demoing several songs for what will become their second LP, with plans to release a single in mid-to-late fall 2024. Finding new inspiration from artists like Low, Wye Oak, Courntey Barnett, Son Lux, St. Vincent, Radiohead, and Broken Social Scene, upcoming releases will lean further into their electronic and atmospheric landscape as well as utilizing the vocal abilities of all band members.
