News & multimedia Event TRACKING PROGRESS TOWARD THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS) IN AFRICA USING AFROBAROMETER 24 May 2021, 12:00AM In 2015, all United Nations member states adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The SDGs are expected to drive national and global development agendas. Tracking progress toward these goals is challenging but essential for informing national decision-making. Afrobarometer survey data can make a unique contribution by providing a little-heard perspective – that of the ordinary citizen in Africa – on progress toward 12 of the 17 SDGs. Newly developed “Afrobarometer SDG Scorecards” highlight citizens’ experiences and evaluations of their country’s performance on democracy and governance, poverty, health, education, energy supply, water and sanitation, inequality, gender equity, and other SDG priorities that can be compared to official UN tracking indicators. For each country surveyed by Afrobarometer, the scorecard consists of a one-page summary (using “stoplights” to indicate progress and challenges) and four pages visualizing performance trends. Webinar on tracking progress toward the SDGs in Africa This webinar will launch the Afrobarometer SDG Scorecards and provide a platform for renowned global thought leaders to lead a conversation about progress toward the SDGs in Africa. Afrobarometer CEO Joe Asunka will present the Afrobarometer SDG Scorecards within the context of Africa’s progress toward the SDGs, with a special focus on SDG1 (no poverty), SDG3 (good health and well-being), and SDG16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions). A panel discussion will feature Dr. Mo Ibrahim (founder and chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation), Dr. Vera Songwe (executive secretary, Economic Commission for Africa), and the Hon. Margot Wallström (former Swedish deputy prime minister and foreign minister). Mr. Solomon Mugera (regional editor, BBC Africa) will moderate. Expected participants will include representatives of: * Development agencies * Government ministries and agencies * Civil society organizations * International and national media * Academia * SDG champions and influencers The Afrobarometer SDG Scorecards will be launched on 24 May 2021 1pm GMT (Accra).
