Join us, in collaboration with Infineon, for the Low Power IoT Design Challenge
with the PSoC™ 6S2 + AIROC™ Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Pioneer Kit !

Make IoT work in industry, using Infineon’s low-power compute, connectivity, and
sensing technology!

The Challenge

The element14 Community is pleased to introduce the Low Power IoT Design
Challenge, in partnership with Infineon Technologies.

So many different applications in industrial and enterprise environments can
benefit from lower-power and easier-to-use embedded solutions. From remote
monitoring of raw materials, to battery-backed sensor hubs on a factory floor,
no company wants to spend money, time, and operational bandwidth to service
devices that are energy inefficient. Add in the design issues that come with
optimizing system power, implementing analog and digital sensor processing,
integrating security, and connecting to the cloud or mobile applications.

Infineon Technologies is deeply committed in its effort to “Make IoT Work.” That
means giving developers like yourselves the right hardware platform to build
smart, energy-efficient, and secure IoT systems, along with an easy-to-use,
flexible, and complete software to bring your ideas to life.

That is why for this Design Challenge, Infineon and element14 are inviting you
to use the PSoC™ 6S2 + AIROC™ Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Pioneer Kit (CY8CKIT-062S2-43012)
, along with the ModusToolbox™ Software Environment, to build a low-power IoT
device. Optimize power in a cloud-connected predictive maintenance module on a
production line, extend the battery life of a rugged device technicians would
wear to get smart alerts, detect human presence in a smart building doorway
using a coin-cell powered sensor node, and more, the possibilities are endless.
We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

20 successful applicants will receive the PSoC™ 6S2 + AIROC™ Wi-Fi/Bluetooth
Pioneer Kit (CY8CKIT-062S2-43012) to build and blog their project with.

For the chance to win one of the prizes below, you must build your low-power
project using the kit above and the ModusToolbox™.

We aren’t necessarily defining “low-power” parameters, as it varies greatly in
different applications, and we want to give you the creative agency to do what
is best for your design. We have lots of enablement to help optimize system
power (see technical resources below), as well as to implement features such as
CapSense capacitive-sensing, graphical displays, machine learning, and much more
(again – see resources below!).

Example applications could include:

 * Factory Automation Sensor Hub
 * Predictive Maintenance Module
 * Human Presence Detection
 * Fall Detection Device
 * Cloud-Connected Robot
 * Air Quality Monitor

This looks like a really cool design challenge.  I'm not too familiar with
the ModusToolBox, so I am looking forward to seeing what people think of it
and how they use it for IoT.   Definitely will spend some time brainstorming
   for this one.

I've not worked with audio before, but it would be cool to see someone use
the IM69D130 Microphone Shield2Go to send audio over bluetooth.  Not sure if
that's possible though since the mic seems to use I2S to transmit PCM audio,
and Bluetooth seems to use AAC.  I'm just genuinely curious because I haven't
seen one used for anything other than DSP applications.

You can read about ModusToolbox in my roadtest review PSoC 6 Pioneer Kit
Roadtest - Review of Development Software. Please note that Cypress
released new version of ModusToolbox since roadtesting time and of course
     new version is better.

I have the same question to e14phil

On surface CY8CKIT-062S2-43012 has more Flash (2MB instead of 1MB) and SRAM
(!MB instead of 288KB), a better radio (type 1LV with WiFi 5 instead of
     type 1DX with WiFi 4).

If my application can run on CY8CKIT-062-WiFi-BT can I use it in the
     challenge?

CYW43012 (which is on 1LV module) support 802.11 ac only basicaly and
does not support all 802.11 ac channels and configurations. Features of
CYW43012 and CYW4343W are very similar. Main benefit of CYW43012 (which
is on 1LV module) over CYW4343W (which is on 1DX module) is that it
consume less current (1.2uA vs 3.5uA in OFF mode, 0.4mA vs 1mA in power
       save DTIM1 mode, 18.5mA vs 37mA when listening, 187mA vs 260mA when
transmitting) so it is more suitable for low power applications.

   Hello e14phil, pchan

What kit is offered exactly? Cypress offers multiple Pioner Kits which differ
in main MCU, Wi-Fi module and onboard peripherals. While you mention (and
describe) kit with code CY8CKIT-062S2-43012 (it is the exactly the same kit
which was Roadtested in Cypress PSoC 62S2 Wi-Fi & BT5.0 Pioneer Dev Kit), but
images and video show different kit (most probably CY8CKIT-062-WiFi-BT but
multiple kits may look like this). Also note that CY8CKIT-062S2-43012 has
   CYW43012 Wi-Fi/BT chip, but linked documentation describes CYW4343W Wi-Fi/BT
   chip instead.

Thank you for information. To summarize kit code (CY8CKIT-062S2-43012)
was correct but images and links to WI-Fi Chip documentation are
incorect. Offered board looks as follows (picture taken from kit user

and links to Wi-FI chip documentation should be:

       CYW43012 Single-Chip, Ultra-Low Power, IEEE 802.11n, 802.11ac-friendly TM

     Some more inspiration:

The AnyCloud: WLAN low power example that's available in ModusToolbox shows
how you can save energy on an active TCP WiFi connection.

It uses the same Low Power Assistant that I'm using for UART receiver with
FreeRTOS - Deep Sleep support . This assistant is a great way of managing
     peripherals in low power mode.

You can see on the chart below that the design goes to sleep when there's
no traffic from the access point:

(this is actual data from my board, a 2000 datapoints (50 seconds) subset
     of 27000 measurements)

Additionally, you can apply additional measures from the related app note
     AN227910 - Low-power system design with CYW43012 and PSoC 6 MCU.

   Very interesting question misaz vlasov01
Let me speak to the sponsor and see if they want to expand the definition of
which boards are in the T&C.

A core part of this challenge is using the Modus Toolbox platform.

Let me get back to you

   Thanks!

If you go to your profile page and choose "content" you will see the

through on that link, and you should find an option for editing (it's at
the top right on the desktop browser I'm using).

Hi Ashok! I'm so sorry to hear about this, I will reach out to you today
and we will get an inventory of what was received and what has not been
received. I suspect I know the issue, and we may need to find an
alternative prize, as the supplier has been very unresponsive on emails.

Update to the Terms and Conditions
After discussing it with Infineon we are happy to allow challengers who
already own a PSoC 6 series kit to enter this challenge.

"Sponsored Challengers Selected official applicants will be chosen to receive
the "Kit" listed above. These successful applicants will be our sponsored
   challengers, and they must use the PSoC™ 6S2 + AIROC™ Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Pioneer
Kit (CY8CKIT-062S2-43012) within their project, and publish their final code
and designs on the element14 Community for others to use.
Those not chosen as sponsored challengers may also join the competition, but
they must base their projects around the kit listed above OR another PSoC 6
Kit and adhere to all terms and conditions of the challenge."

   Just remember to use either the PSoC™ 6S2 + AIROC™ Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Pioneer
Kit (CY8CKIT-062S2-43012) or another mumber of the PSoC 6 Family, along with
the ModusToolbox™ platform in your project

I think the main reason with the delay are problems in supply chain. This
board is out of stock at this moment. Probably some components are not
available to manufacture this board. Just look at the announcement from
Toyota today. It cuts global production by 40% due chip shortages. It is an
on uncharted territory for the business.

The good indicator when challenge will be started is the availability of
this board at Newark/Avnet. You can click a button buy now and it will show
     the availability.

Obviously it will be great to hear when the challenge may start as we can
     commit to other endeavors meanwhile.

If the contest has to be delayed due to a part shortage, you would think
an inventory would have been secured before rolling out the competition.
The application dates were extended to encourage more entrants and have
more people commit their time to this endeavor.  Each individual who
submitted an application devoted personal time to this project.  It is
not an unreasonable request to ask the organizers to provide an update,
since we should already be building the project under the original
       timeline.

Board is availaible on official Cypress store
       (https://www.cypress.com/documentation/development-kitsboards/psoc-62s2-wi-fi-bt-pioneer-kit-cy8ckit-062s2-43012
) and it is also availaible at farnel and other distributors so I think
this is not an significant issue in this case. Selecting
chalengers/winners always take some time because they must read lot of
applications and evaluate them. Usualy it takes about week or two so I
       recommend just wait.

Congratulations to all sponsored challengers, I am excited to see what you
have with your brand new Infineon kit!   I was not too active in the past 2
months and I most definitely missed the application deadline for this
contest. I do in fact have an old kit lying around (PSoC 6 WiFi-BT Pioneer
Kit). Perhaps I might join as a non-sponsored contestant once I think of a
   cool idea
