Topping in Local Government — Dec 4, 2024 ODESSA, TEXAS, FACES ONGOING SERVICE DISRUPTIONS FOLLOWING CYBER INCIDENT The City of Odessa, Texas, continues to experience significant disruptions to municipal services following a cyber incident that began on November 20, 2024. The attack, involving what the city described as a malicious script, has affected various city departments, including the Billing and Collection Department and the Municipal Court, leading to closures and a suspension of online payment systems. Essential services such as police, fire, and water operations remain operational. City officials have implemented state-provided cybersecurity software to address vulnerabilities and are collaborating with external agencies to investigate the breach. Despite initial expectations for a swift resolution, the recovery process has extended into its third week, with full restoration of services anticipated by December 5. In the interim, residents are advised to make payments via money orders or checks at City Hall, as credit card transactions and cash payments are currently unavailable. The city has assured residents that no late fees will be applied and no services will be disconnected during this period.
