Among the most revered photographers of the 20th century, Ansel Adams is celebrated for his majestic black-and-white images of the American West. For nearly 60 years, Adams explored and recorded the grandeur of nature, initiating a lyrical way of viewing the world in photographs that convey beauty, awe, and emotional drama. Advocating "pure" photography favoring sharp focus, Adams placed great value on technical mastery and elevated photography as an art form throughout the 20th century. "Ansel Adams and the Legacy of the American Landscape: Photographs from the NBMAA" considers Adams’ immeasurable contributions to photography, art, and environmental advocacy over the past century. The exhibition places iconic images by Adams in dialogue with works by photographers who practiced during and after his life to provide deeper perspectives on themes central to his practice, demonstrate the power of his legacy, and inspire consideration about the state of the American landscape in the 21st century. Originally an abstract painter, Charles Yoder shifted to figurative art after a pivotal night when he found himself standing in the shadows of a pine forest in deep snow under a sparkling full moon. The simple beauty of what he saw led to an epiphany: all that he had been looking for in painting was there before him. Struck by that image, his subsequent work became a meditation on that glimpse. He has worked ever since to share that exhilarating sensation. Yoder was raised and educated in Europe and the United States, where he finished his formal education with a BFA from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn. He teaches printmaking at the School of Visual arts and served as director of Castelli Graphics and curator to acclaimed artist Robert Rauschenberg. Burtynsky's "Quarries" series explores the extraction of "dimension stone"—blocks of granite or marble that are used in architecture or tombstones. Measuring over 600 feet deep and among the largest "deep-hole" dimension quarries in the world, the Rock of Ages granite quarry in Barre, Vermont, immediately captivated Burtynsky and became the source of many of his most iconic early images. Established in 1885, Rock of Ages now operates ten active quarries in and beyond Barre; however, Burtynsky was fascinated by its abandoned and inactive sites in particular, where nature can be seen reclaiming terrain. Located throughout these quarry sites, stagnate pools of water radiate in deep teal blue or bright turquoise colors created by algae that feed on the mineral deposits in the water. Deceptively tranquil, the pools are often hundreds of feet deep. "Edward Burtynsky: Earth Observed" is on view at the NBMAA through April 16, 2023.
