Home Login STUDY ABROAD AND THE LAW: WHAT POSTSECONDARY ADMINISTRATORS NEED TO KNOW Author: Dennis Gregory. Source: Volume 10, Number 04, Summer 2009 , pp.77-80(4) next article > |return to table of contents Abstract: With active wars in several countries around the world, and with issues of potential terrorism and politically focused attacks on Americans—not to mention other forms of potential injury or death to American students studying abroad—it appears that it is important for student affairs administrators, academic administrators, legal counsel, faculty, and students all to be mindful of potential threats. Clearly, with the foreseeability of potential incidents, the potential applicability of state and federal law, and plain old common sense, we need to support efforts by study abroad professionals to provide appropriate care during study abroad programs. It is particularly incumbent on these professionals to work with faculty who sponsor programs and teach classes with a study abroad element to emphasize the importance of reasonable care. As a faculty member who provides a class with a study abroad element, I know how important preparation can be in these programs. Keywords: Bloss v. University of Minnesota; King, et al. v.
