STRENGTHEN IT. CHANGES TO THE CITY’S IMMIGRANT FRIENDLY POLICY COULD BE
UNDERWAY. WE’RE STRENGTHENING IT. WE NEED TO BE WORKING TOGETHER. IT ALSO STATES
THAT CITY RESOURCES SHALL NOT BE USED TO ASSIST IN ENFORCING FEDERAL IMMIGRATION
LAWS. CITY COUNCILORS BROKE THE SUN AND RENEE GROUPS WILL BE INTRODUCING THE
PROPOSAL AT TONIGHT’S CITY COUNCIL MEETING. ANYBODY IS WELCOME TO COME HERE, BUT
IF THEY’RE COMING HERE UNDER THE WRONG INTENTIONS TO COMMIT A VIOLENT CRIME TO
TRAFFIC IN DRUGS OR IN HUMAN BEINGS, WE DON’T HAVE A PLACE FOR THAT IN OUR
COMMUNITY. AND THEY THEY SHOULDN’T BE HERE. UM, IF THEY CAN’T, UM, CONTRIBUTE IN
A POSITIVE AND GOOD WAY. THE CURRENT POLICY PROHIBITS THE CITY FROM USING ITS
RESOURCES TO IDENTIFY SOMEONE’S IMMIGRATION STATUS, OR TAKE THEM INTO CUSTODY
SOLELY BECAUSE OF THAT STATUS. IF IT PASSES, THE AMENDED POLICY WILL NO LONGER
APPLY TO THOSE CHARGED WITH VIOLENT FELONIES. HUMAN TRAFFICKING OR TRAFFICKING
OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES. FENTANYL IS A REAL PROBLEM IN OUR COUNTRY AND IN OUR
CITY, AND IT’S CONTRIBUTED TO SO MUCH OF THE CRIME THAT WE’RE SEEING. WE’VE GOT
TO STOP IT. IT’S NOT GETTING BETTER. AND, UM, THIS IS THIS IS ONE TOOL THAT CAN
MAKE A DIFFERENCE. GOES ON TO SAY THE CITY’S COMMITMENT TO INTEGRATION AND
INCLUSION REMAINS THE SAME. WE SHOULD BE WELCOMING TO, UM,

Video above: City councilors Renee Grout and Brook Bassan are proposing changes
to Albuquerque's 'Immigrant Friendly Policy.' Both councilors will be
introducing the amended policy at Monday's city council meeting on May 6, 2024.
The current policy prohibits municipal resources from being used to identify
individuals' immigration status or apprehend persons solely on the basis of
immigration status unless otherwise required by law. If it passes, the amended
policy will no longer apply to those charged with violent felonies, human
trafficking or trafficking of controlled substances. Stay up-to-date: The latest
