ARCTIC EXPLORATION

Arctic exploration is the physical exploration of the Arctic region of the
Earth. It refers to the historical period during which mankind has explored the
region north of the Arctic Circle. Historical records suggest that humankind
have explored the northern extremes since 325 BC, when the ancient Greek sailor
Pytheas reached a frozen sea while attempting to find a source of the metal tin.
Dangerous oceans and poor weather conditions often fetter explorers attempting
to reach polar regions and journeying through these perils by sight, boat, and
foot has proven difficult.

FIRST ATTEMPTS

ANCIENT GREECE

Some scholars believe that the first attempts to penetrate the Arctic Circle can
be traced to ancient Greece and the sailor Pytheas, a contemporary of Aristotle
and Alexander the Great, who, in c. 325 BC, attempted to find the source of the
tin that would sporadically reach the Greek colony of Massilia (now Marseille)
on the Mediterranean coast. Sailing past the Pillars of Hercules, he reached
Brittany and even Cornwall, eventually circumnavigating the British Isles. From
the local population, he heard news of the mysterious land of Thule, even
farther to the north. After six days of sailing, he reached land at the edge of
a frozen sea (described by him as "curdled"), and described what is believed to
be the aurora and the midnight sun. While some historians claim that this new
land of Thule was the Norwegian coast or the Shetland Islands, based on his
descriptions and the trade routes of early British sailors, it is possible that
Pytheas reached as far as Iceland.

Archipelago, in search of an elusive Northwest Passage. At the large mouth of
channel, they were met by two whaling ships, who saw them off shortly afterward.
These would be the last individuals to see the ships or the men on board ever
again. For over a century, their whereabouts remained a mystery, but slowly over
the past few decades, what happened to the ships and the men on board has been
discovered, and it is far more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. This
is Franklin’s Lost Expedition. Attributions/Special Thanks for Photographs Léna,

donat@was.media In 1909, the South Pole remained the last major geographic
trophy to be won. Captain Robert Scott, who led the British expedition, was not
going to rush: he developed a three-year program that involved extensive
scientific research and systematic preparations for the trip to the Pole. He had
no idea how much the Norwegians would interfere with his plans. In this episode
of ‘How It Was,’ we'll tell you about one of the most dramatic confrontations in
the history of geographical discoveries - the rivalry between the British and
Norwegians for the title of the first conquerors of the South Pole. Who coped
better with the task: strong and hardy Norwegians, dressed in animal furs, or
British scientists, equipped with the latest science supplies? What mistakes can
cost lives in Antarctica, and how can a literary gift turn defeat into victory?
These are the topics explored in our new video. The covers and animations were

In 1845, two ships entered the dark waters of the frozen and barren Canadian
Archipelago, in search of an elusive Northwest Passage. At the large mouth of
channel, they were met by two whaling ships, who saw them off shortly
afterward. These would be the last individuals to see the ships or the men on

on board has been discovered, and it is far more horrifying than anyone could

Expedition of 1913–16. The Karluk, pioneered by Vilhjalmur Steffanson, is a
tragic story of an arctic expedition gone horribly wrong. While attempting to
push east, north of Alaska, the ship became stuck in the ice and was forced
to drift for hundreds of miles. Ultimately, stranding those aboard in the
middle of the harsh ice floes of the arctic ocean. This ship wreck is one of

donat@was.media In 1909, the South Pole remained the last major geographic
trophy to be won. Captain Robert Scott, who led the British expedition, was
not going to rush: he developed a three-year program that involved extensive
scientific research and systematic preparations for the trip to the Pole. He
had no idea how much the Norwegians would interfere with his plans. In this
episode of ‘How It Was,’ we'll tell you about one of the most dramatic
confrontations in the history of geographical discoveries - the rivalry
between the British and Norwegians for the title of the first conquerors of
the South Pole. Who coped better with the task: strong and hardy Norwegians,
dressed in animal furs, or British scientists, equipped with the latest
science supplies? What mistakes can cost lives in Antarctica, and how can a
literary gift turn defeat into victory? These are the topics explored in our
new video. The covers and animations were designed using https://crello.com/.

These would be the last individuals to see the ships or the men on board ever

PayPal: donat@ was. media In 1909, the South Pole remained the last major
geographic trophy to be won. Captain Robert Scott, who led the British
expedition, was not going to rush: he developed a three-year program that
involved extensive scientific research and systematic preparations
for the trip to the Pole. He had no idea how much the Norwegians would
interfere with his plans. In this episode of ‘How It Was,’ we'll tell you
about one of the most dramatic confrontations in the history of
geographical discoveries - the rivalry between the British and
Norwegians for the title of the first conquerors of the South Pole. Who coped
better with the task: strong and hardy Norwegians, dressed in animal furs,
or British scientists, equipped with the latest science supplies? What
mistakes can cost lives in Antarctica, and how can a literary gift turn
