What are the odds of Patrick Joseph Oliver, Oliver Patrick Joseph and Joseph
Oliver Patrick all signing up for your service on the same day?

Whether it's adding extra characters or shuffling names, criminal aliases are
increasingly common in promotion abuse scams.

In tests carried out on 100,000 existing customer records, one business found

MAILBOX IDENTITY MASKING

There are many legitimate reasons for using a mailbox or mail forwarding
address, but proof of address in an account application is not one of them.

Identity criminals trying to circumvent customer due diligence and to break into
an unsuspecting business often use a genuine ‘virtual’ address to mask their

BOGUS POSTCODE DETECTION

Postcodes are formed and formatted differently from country to country,
sometimes covering a wide area, sometimes a single address. This creates space
for identity fraud.

Wired telephone connections may be on the way out but many landline numbers are
still added to applications.

International fraudsters trying to fake a fixed-line number can often be caught
out by their unfamiliarity with local dialling (area) codes.

The virtual mobile number is to digital identity fraud what the prepaid or
‘burner’ mobile is to street crime – a cheap, easily accessible aid to
anonymity.

Designed for legitimate software testing applications, these disposable mobile
numbers are not tied to a SIM card and are shockingly simple to acquire.

One UK mobile number [07488******] has to date been detected by GBG Trust 132
times in online applications to 16 businesses.
