BACK STORY ON HIGH SPEED TRAINS IN FLORIDA TEN BILLION DOLLARS IN RAIL MONEY TURNED DOWN BY FLORIDA In the early days of former Governor Scott's administration, the US Government had offered $10 billion to the State of Florida to fund a mono rail from Tampa to Orlando. For some unknown reason, the money was turned down by then Governor Rick Scott. Had that money been spent, today Florida would have a mono rail along that same corridor. It would have been finished about eight years ago and serving residents and visitors alike. The fares would have been much less than the proposed Brightline extension because the riders would not have to be repaying the loans used to fund construction of most of Brightline. EXPANSION PLANS TO TAMPA, FL Brightline intends to build two additional stations in the Orlando area as part of its planned extension toward Tampa. "One new station is expected to be located at the Orange County Convention Center and a second station is expected to be convenient to the I-Drive business community and multiple theme parks," the report stated. Those theme parks include SeaWorld Orlando, Universal Orlando Resort, and Walt Disney World Resort, the report added. TRAIN LINE OWNERSHIP Both Brightline and Amtrak share railroad tracks owned by other railroad companies. BRIGHTLINE Brightline is owned by Florida East Coast Industries (FECI) which is owned by Fortress Asset Management Company, which in turn is owned by Abu Dhabi-based sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company. Fortress, a real estate development company, has owned FEIC since 2007 and borrowed the money to build the present rail infrastructure using mainly tax free bonds. Fortress has developed and is developing commercial properties along the east coast route of Brightline. Brightline operates partially on Florida East Coast Railroad tracks owned by Grupo Mexico. Grupo Mexico is a Mexican holding company with various interests in US railroads. Florida East Coast Railway operates freight trains on its 352 miles of tracks along Florida's east coast. It shares its tracks, upgraded by Brightline to accommodate high speed trains, with Brightline from Miami to Cocoa, FL. Brightline owns the tracks it has installed along Hwy 528 between Cocoa, FL and Orlando, FL. AMTRAK Founded in 1971 as a quasi-public corporation that now operates many U.S. passenger rail routes in 48 states. Amtrak receives a combination of state and federal subsidies but is managed as a for-profit organization. Amtrak owns some rail lines but mainly operates on the tracks of other railroads. In Florida, Amtrak operates on these host railroads: Auto Train CSX, Florida Central Rail Corridor 36%. Silver Meteor operates on CSX, Florida Central Rail Corridor, and Florida DOT 44%. Silver Star operates on CSX, Norfolk Southern, Florida Central Rail Corridor, and Florida DOT. Questions? Comments? Advertise?
