ABOUT THIS APPEAL Tonga has been devastated by the violent eruption of Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai. Not only have communications, infrastructure and food crops been severely damaged - there are developing risks of contamination from ashfall, most notably to Tonga’s water-supply and air quality. Though the situation is still unfolding, there is an urgent need for water and emergency food supplies. UNICEF is leading the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) response in Tonga alongside partners enabling children and families to access safe drinking water as a top priority. As COVID-19 has forced Tonga to keep its borders closed we will be working through our established partners on the ground. It is through these networks that we will disinfect and rehabilitate the current water system in affected communities, schools, and health care facilities. UNICEF has pre-positioned humanitarian supplies within the region ready to support impacted communities as a matter of urgency. Aid for Tonga We are urgently calling on the renowned kiwi generosity to help our neighbouring whānau in Tonga. If New Zealanders want to help, the most effective response is to donate money rather than send supplies that may not be needed.
