Zacks Equity Research December 09, 2024 LULU Quick QuoteLULU QQQ Quick QuoteQQQ TEAM Quick QuoteTEAM QQEW Quick QuoteQQEW VUG Quick QuoteVUG PDD Quick QuotePDD Better trading starts here. Zacks Equity Research Style Box ETF Cancel Read MoreHide Full Article Launched on 04/19/2006, the First Trust NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted ETF (QQEW Quick QuoteQQEW - Free Report) is a passively managed exchange traded fund designed to provide a broad exposure to the Large Cap Growth segment of the US equity market. The fund is sponsored by First Trust Advisors. It has amassed assets over $2.01 billion, making it one of the average sized ETFs attempting to match the Large Cap Growth segment of the US equity market. WHY LARGE CAP GROWTH Companies that fall in the large cap category tend to have a market capitalization above $10 billion. They tend to be stable companies with predictable cash flows and are usually less volatile than mid and small cap companies. Growth stocks have higher than average sales and earnings growth rates. While these are expected to grow faster than the broader market, they also have higher valuations. Something to keep in mind is the higher level of volatility that is affiliated with growth stocks. Even though growth stocks are more likely to outperform their value counterparts in strong bull markets, value stocks have a record of delivering better returns in almost all markets than growth stocks. COSTS When considering an ETF's total return, expense ratios are an important factor, and cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive counterparts in the long term if all other factors remain equal. Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.57%, putting it on par with most peer products in the space. It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 0.67%. SECTOR EXPOSURE AND TOP HOLDINGS Even though ETFs offer diversified exposure which minimizes single stock risk, it is still important to look into a fund's holdings before investing. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis. This ETF has heaviest allocation to the Information Technology sector--about 39.10% of the portfolio. Consumer Discretionary and Industrials round out the top three. Looking at individual holdings, Atlassian Corporation (class A) (TEAM Quick QuoteTEAM - Free Report) accounts for about 1.37% of total assets, followed by Lululemon Athletica Inc. (LULU Quick QuoteLULU - Free Report) and Pdd Holdings Inc. (adr) (PDD Quick QuotePDD - Free Report) . The top 10 holdings account for about 11.7% of total assets under management. PERFORMANCE AND RISK QQEW seeks to match the performance of the NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted Index before fees and expenses. The NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted Index is the equal-weighted version of the NASDAQ-100 Index which includes 100 of the largest non-financial securities listed on NASDAQ based on market capitalization. The ETF has gained about 13.98% so far this year and is up about 22.84% in the last one year (as of 12/09/2024). In the past 52-week period, it has traded between $112.64 and $133.68. The ETF has a beta of 1.02 and standard deviation of 21.63% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 102 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk. ALTERNATIVES First Trust NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted ETF holds a Zacks ETF Rank of 2 (Buy), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. Because of this, QQEW is an outstanding option for investors seeking exposure to the Style Box - Large Cap Growth segment of the market. There are other additional ETFs in the space that investors could consider as well. The Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG Quick QuoteVUG - Free Report) and the Invesco QQQ (QQQ Quick QuoteQQQ - Free Report) track a similar index. While Vanguard Growth ETF has $158.39 billion in assets, Invesco QQQ has $326.83 billion. VUG has an expense ratio of 0.04% and QQQ charges 0.20%. BOTTOM-LINE Retail and institutional investors increasingly turn to passively managed ETFs because they offer low costs, transparency, flexibility, and tax efficiency; these kind of funds are also excellent vehicles for long term investors. This dedication to giving investors a trading advantage led to the creation of our proven Zacks Rank stock-rating system. Since 1988 it has more than doubled the S&P 500 with an average gain of +24.35% per year. These returns cover a period from January 1, 1988 through December 2, 2024. Zacks Rank stock-rating system returns are computed monthly based on the beginning of the month and end of the month Zacks Rank stock prices plus any dividends received during that particular month. A simple, equally-weighted average return of all Zacks Rank stocks is calculated to determine the monthly return. The monthly returns are then compounded to arrive at the annual return. Only Zacks Rank stocks included in Zacks hypothetical portfolios at the beginning of each month are included in the return calculations. Zacks Ranks stocks can, and often do, change throughout the month. Certain Zacks Rank stocks for which no month-end price was available, pricing information was not collected, or for certain other reasons have been excluded from these return calculations.
