The tournament which took place at the Boundless FC grounds hosted twenty two teams (16 seniors and 6 under 17) from as far as Gqeberha, Mthatha and other areas. Even though the tournament did not have major sponsors and received only small donations, the stakes were high with the biggest winner taking home a whooping R10 000. The tournament results were as follow: Soccer seniors Quarter finals: Boundless FC vs Eleven Attackers 1-1 (4-2) Zimbane Eagles vs Real Sundowns 3-1 Rainbow Stars vs PK United 0-0 (4-2) Academy vs Dokolwane Stars 1-2 Semi-finals: Zimbane Eagles vs Dokowane Stars 2-0 Boundless FC vs Rainbow Stars 1-0 Final: Boundless FC vs Zimbane Eagles 3-0 With these results, Boundless FC won the biggest share of the cake, taking home the prize money of R10 000, a cup and medals. While Zimbane Eagles settled for the second prize of R5 000 and medals. In the Under 17 division, Hot Pool FC beat PK United 5-4 on penalties, taking home R800 in prize money, a cup and medals, and PK United received R500, a cup and medals as runners up. BYD is a registered NPO whose mission is ‘to provide opportunities for personal growth, skills development, and positive experiences for underserved communities and create an educational atmosphere for children’ as stated in the organisation’s profile. Director and Project Manager Thando Manxiwa, started the organisation after relocating to Wesley Village a few years ago when she found out that the village’s youth were not involved in many activities and lacked resources. She began by organising kids-friendly activities in a safe and stimulating environment. Currently, the organisation has soccer and netball teams and plan to add athletics and rugby soon. Manxiwa said that though the tournament was a success, it could have been better with more sponsors and support from the community. “There was less support from the community, but we appreciate the support we get from the parents of BYD members, helping us realise their children’s dreams”, said Manxiwa. She also said that one of the challenges that they are facing is that the sport grounds they are currently utilising are not officially theirs. “This restricts us from developing the space and build facilities like proper netball courts as the space does not belong to us”, she added. Anyone who would like to assist Boundless Youth Development realise its dreams of changing young people’s lives in Wesley Village and beyond, can contact Thando Manxiwa on 065 918 5801 or via email on boundlessfc@gmail.com. Latest News NEW MINING MUST STOP ON WEST COAST, SAYS FISHERMEN Details Mandla 17 August 2024 By: Mandla Ndeya Introduction In a growing movement that underscores the intersection of environmental conservation and economic livelihoods, fishers along the West Coast have voiced strong opposition to new mining operations in their waters. This call to action comes amid increasing concerns about the potential ecological impacts of mining activities on marine life, fisheries, and coastal communities. Background on Mining Activities The West Coast has long been a site of rich natural resources, including minerals that are essential for various industries. However, as demand for these resources escalates, proposals for new mining projects have emerged. These projects often promise economic benefits such as job creation and increased local revenue. Nonetheless, they also pose significant risks to the delicate marine ecosystems that support local fisheries. Concerns from the Fishing Community Fishers argue that new mining operations could lead to detrimental effects on fish populations and their habitats. The process of extracting minerals often involves dredging and other disruptive techniques that can destroy underwater ecosystems. This disruption not only threatens fish stocks but also affects the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing for their income. Local fishermen have reported declining catches in areas near existing mining operations, attributing this decline to habitat destruction and pollution caused by mining activities. They fear that expanding these operations will exacerbate these issues, leading to further declines in fish populations and jeopardizing their way of life. Environmental Implications The environmental implications of mining are profound. The extraction process can release toxic substances into the water, which can accumulate in marine organisms and disrupt food chains. Additionally, sedimentation from mining can smother coral reefs and other vital habitats necessary for fish reproduction and growth. Moreover, many species along the West Coast are already under stress from climate change, overfishing, and habitat loss. Introducing new threats through mining could push some species closer to extinction and disrupt the balance of marine ecosystems even further. Regulatory Landscape Currently, regulatory frameworks governing mining activities vary significantly across states along the West Coast. Some regions have stricter regulations aimed at protecting marine environments while others are more lenient in granting permits for new projects. Fishers are calling for a unified approach that prioritizes sustainable practices over short-term economic gains. Advocacy groups are urging state governments to impose moratoriums on new mining permits until comprehensive environmental impact assessments can be conducted. They argue that without thorough evaluations of how these projects affect marine life and local economies, it is irresponsible to proceed with any new developments. Community Response In response to these concerns, several fishing communities have organized protests and campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the potential dangers of new mining operations. They emphasize the importance of preserving marine biodiversity not just for ecological reasons but also for cultural heritage tied closely to fishing traditions. Local businesses reliant on tourism associated with fishing activities have also joined forces with fishers in this fight against new mining initiatives. They argue that a healthy ocean ecosystem is vital not only for fishing but also for attracting tourists who contribute significantly to local economies. Conclusion As tensions rise between economic development interests and environmental protection efforts along the West Coast, fishers remain steadfast in their opposition to new mining activities. Their calls highlight an urgent need for dialogue among stakeholders—including government officials, industry representatives, environmentalists, and local communities—to find solutions that balance resource extraction with ecological sustainability. The future of both fisheries and coastal ecosystems hangs in the balance as this debate continues to unfold. Latest News MALEMA SHATTERED AS FLOYD LEAVES FOR MK PARTY Details Mandla 17 August 2024 By: Odwa Funeka Former EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivhambu announced on Thursday that he did not renew his membership as an EFF member because he will be joining the newly formed MK Party as its active member. Shivhambu, a founding member of the EFF also wrote to the party requesting that it remove him from all his roles in the party including being its member of parliament. Alongside EFF president Julius Malema, Shivhambu played a pivotal role in the formation of the party in 2013 after their expulsion from the ANC. The two were expelled from the ANC when Jacob Zuma (now leader of the MK Party) was the president of the party. Shivhambu announced his departure in a media briefing held at the Winnie Mandela house, the party’s headquarters. “I will be actively involved Umkhonto Wesizwe Party and shape its direction”, said Shivhambu. Shivhambu did not divulge his reasons for his departure from the EFF. But explained that “both the MK Party and EFF are anti-capitalism, anti-racism, anti-sexism and anti-imperialism” and that those are the values that are common in both parties. A visible distraught Malema likened the news of Shivhambu’s departure to that of the passing of his late mother and said that it is a darkest moment for the party since its formation. “I never had doubts about Floyd and that there was a possibility of a competition between the two of us”, said Malema. A few hours before the media briefing, Malema took to his Facebook page and wrote “As painful as it is, we must take a decision about him”, before he later posted that “More is about to follow him”. The national parliament later announced that it is yet to receive a formal resignation from Shivhambu, and that it has received a resignation letter from Mzwanele Manyi a former EFF MP who is also said to be jumping ship to the MK Party that has recently fired eighteen MPs. Though Shivhambu said that he has not been promised any senior position in his new political home, various political analysts have warned that there might be more than what is being presented to the general public. Some indicated the fact that Shivhambu made this bold statement in a ‘gathering attended by the party’s senior leadership, at the party’s headquarters and the common values that Shivhambu highlighted’. Also, even though the party’s constitution does not allow those who leave the party for other pack to the party, its leader Julius Malema said that Shivhambu is welcome to come back to the party anytime he changes his mind. Security PREMIER MABUYANE COMMENDS POLICE SWIFT RESPONSE FOLLOWING N6 CASH-IN-TRANSIT ATTACK Details Mandla 12 August 2024 By: Odwa Funeka Eastern Cape premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has commended the swift and decisive actions of the police force in the aftermath of a cash-in-transit attack on the N6 between East London and Stutterheim on Monday the 29th July 2024 in the morning. Later that same day, police followed information to Keiskammahoek, where upon arrival they were attacked by suspects using high calibre rifles. The perpetrators of this heinous act were met with a highly organised and strategic response from the police, who acted with both courage and precision, as they later gunned down five suspects in Keiskammahoek. The money was recovered in the original money bags. Premier Mabuyane has stated that the safety and security of the province's residents and the protection of the economy are of paramount importance, and it is moments like these that the true mettle of the province's law enforcement is tested and proven. "The bizarre nature of this crime posed a significant threat to both the security personnel involved and the innocent citizens around the vicinity. The police response is a testament to the dedication and bravery of our officers that they were able to respond so effectively. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to every officer who played a role in this operation. Their commitment to protecting citizens of the Eastern Cape does not go unnoticed," premier Mabuyane said. The premier has further assured the people of the Eastern Cape that their safety is top priority, and that government will not be deterred by those who seek to disrupt peace and stability in the province. "As government we remain steadfast in our resolve to support our law enforcement agencies and to implement measures that enhance the safety of our people. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that criminals are brought to justice. Together, with the support of our law enforcement and vigilance of our communities, we will continue to build a secure and prosperous province," he concluded. Business BEEF, CANNABIS AND FUNDS IN THE POT OF PROMISES OF EC DRDAR Details Mandla 12 August 2024 By: Odwa Funeka As South Africa’s national and provincial governments transition into the seventh administration, different government departments are tabling their policy and budget speeches for the 2024/2025 financial year. Yesterday, Eastern Cape MEC for the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Nonceba Kontsiwe tabled her department’s Policy Speech in front of the province’s members of legislature. This comes at the time the province is faced with recession and increased poverty unemployment rate. As was expected by many, food security was on top of her speech as the department’s ‘priority goal to guarantee food security in the province’. Kontsiwe said, her department is committed to support the province’s people in cultivating the land, regardless of its size to produce their own food. “In this term, we aim to establish rural food hubs in our rural areas. These hubs will enable subsistence and home-based vegetable producers to collect, store and process their produce for local market,” said Kontsiwe. “This initiative will include establishing small-scale vegetable nurseries to produce high-quality seedlings and this will reduce production costs. DRDAR and DALRRD are collaborating to support 42 000 households in growing their own foods in the 2024/25 financial year,” she added. The MEC also spoke highly of the commercialisation of agriculture in the province. She said that, despite having the highest livestock population, the province only contributes 8% to the country’s livestock GDP. Kontsiwe said that, in this term, her department will partner with Development Finance Institutions (DFI) to support black farmers in establishing feedlots through district clusters and beef aggregators to secure commercial scale at both production and processing. “This will be implemented by fodder and grain production programs to facilitate manufacturing of feed, aimed at enhancing value addition and processing in the province. We have already commenced with the development of a commercial feedlot program in collaboration with the Ngqushwa Beef Complex, which will consist of a commercial feedlot and abattoir. We are also assessing commercial feedlot potential and possible partners in other districts,” she explained. Kontsiwe added that her department aims to get irrigation schemes back to production. She said that the province’s irrigation schemes are underutilised due to poor infrastructure, community conflicts and lack of investment. She said that her department through partnership with Office of the Premeir (OTP), Provincial Treasury (PT), National Treasury (NT), World Bank Group (WBG) in South Africa and Infrastructure South Africa are currently developing an infrastructure business plan to revitalise ten irrigation schemes with an estimated investment of R 3 billion. “Five irrigation schemes are currently partnering with Amadlelo Dairy for milk production. Three irrigation schemes are focused on commercial vegetable production, and two are dedicated to Lucerne production. The Department of Water and Sanitation is implementing bulk infrastructure upgrade in the Ncora, Keiskamma, Qamata and Shiloh irrigation schemes,” said Kontsiwe. She said that during the 2023/24 financial year, her department and ECDC distributed R32 million to 18 agricultural enterprises, creating 455 jobs. “We are committed to this initiative with a budget of R75 million allocated to attract equal or more funding from DFI and the private sector”. She added that, the push to integrate Cannabis into the provincial economy is gaining traction, and that the recently signed “Cannabis for Private Purpose Act” in May 2024 includes provisions for amnesty for individuals with Cannabis-related criminal records, eliminating the need for a Police Clearance Certificate when applying for Hemp permits. She said that several agreements with different stakeholders will boost the provinces economy and create thousands of jobs. On August 15, the MEC will award top performing women in the province who are contributing in the economic development and job creation through the agricultural sector. The event will take place at the Feather Market Centre in Gqeberha during the annual Women Entrepreneur Awards.
