PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICALS These medicals provide a baseline assessment on a candidate before they begin their role. PERIODIC MEDICALS Periodic medical assessments are performed on your existing employees over regular periods during the course of their employment. SPECIALISED MEDICALS Many industries are required to obtain a specific medical due to the health and safety risks associated within their work environment. PREPARING FOR YOUR MEDICAL ASSESSMENT Sonic HealthPlus has been appointed to provide a medical assessment on behalf of your prospective employer. The main purpose of this assessment is to determine your suitability to effectively perform the tasks involved with the role you have applied for and to ensure this can be achieved without risk to yourself or others. Sonic HealthPlus does not make the final determination about your suitability to be employed. This is at the sole discretion of the prospective employer and Sonic HealthPlus will not know if you have been successful with your proposed employment. FAQ Below are some frequently asked questions, regarding employment medicals. ENQUIRE Complete our enquiry form below and one of our qualified client partners will be in touch. Preparation * How it works * Pre-employment Medicals * Periodic Medicals * Specialised Medicals * Preparation * FAQ * Enquire HOW IT WORKS Employment and Pre-employment medicals work by creating medicals around the requirements of the role to determine risk and safety of the candidate in the workplace, which is vital to the performance of your business. These medicals are performed by our multidisciplinary or multifaceted occupational health team. By performing these medicals prior to a candidate’s role confirmation, your workplace is assisting with risk management and ensuring suitability of the person in this role. The assessments will be determined by role description provided by your workplace for each candidate. They are typically the below areas, however if the role is specialised we will create a specific assessment. SCREENER / NURSE / EP / PHYSIOTHERAPIST * Screening (Blood Pressure, Vision, Height, Weight, Urinalysis) * Drug Testing (Instant and/or Lab DAS) IF REQUIRED * Blood Testing * Audiometry * Spirometry * Musculoskeletal + Fitness Assessment DOCTOR REVIEW * Medical History Questionnaire * Cardiovascular * Oral and Ear * Respiratory * Nervous System * Basic Musculoskeletal * Abdominal * Skin The assessments will provide you and your employee with evidence based medical screening to ensure their health is not being adversely affected whilst performing their role. Many industries by nature, will have a range of health risks from noise, dust, chemicals or hazardous substances in their environment. Over time, ongoing exposure to these hazards can affect an individual’s health. Sonic HealthPlus will tailor a medical assessment around specific hazards which are relevant to a particular group of employees. Our doctors and medical staff are industry specific trained allowing them to perform the medicals your industry requires to comply. For the best possible outcome we recommend the following preparations: AUDIO (AUD) Learn more AUDIO (AUD) CONTENT Avoid exposure to loud noises such as loud music, riding a motorbike or travelling in an aeroplane for at least 16 hours prior to the test. On the day you will be asked to sit inside a booth wearing headphones and to indicate to the screener when you hear variations in sound intensity and pitch, involving thresholds and differing frequencies. Note: If you have a cold, or ear wax build up we may not be able to complete the audio on the day and will need to reschedule. SPIRO (SPIRO) Learn more SPIRO (SPIRO) CONTENT If you are using bronchodilator medication, where possible and safe, ensure that you withhold your current treatment for at least 4-6 hours prior to your appointment. Refrain from the following activities prior to testing: Consuming alcohol or other intoxicating substances - 8 hours prior Smoking/vaping/water pipe - 1 hour prior Vigorous exercising - 1 hour prior Avoid wearing tight clothing This assessment requires you to place a mouthpiece just past your teeth, inhale completely until your lungs are full and then force out the air as fast and hard as possible until your lungs are completely empty. To ensure results are valid, three acceptable and reproducible tests will need to be completed. Note: You may need more than 3 attempts to achieve the desired result. DAS SCREEN (DAS and INSTANT) Learn more DAS SCREEN (DAS OR INSTANT) CONTENT Urine Drug Screens You will be asked to provide a urine sample, during which time you may be supervised when providing the sample. Bring a list of medications both prescription and non-prescription you may have taken in the last 30 days. Prior to the DAS you will be asked to remove any jackets, bulky items of clothing and empty your pockets; your belongings are securely stored. Sometimes the results may require confirmatory testing which includes additional paperwork, this doesn’t necessarily mean the result is positive. Note: Confirmatory testing does incur additional costs. Breath Alcohol Tests Avoid eating or drinking approximately 20 minutes prior to the test (this includes chewing gum and water). HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO GET THE RESULTS? Results are usually released 24 – 48 hours after the assessment. WHY ARE MY RESULTS DELAYED? There are many reasons why the results may be delayed these include: * Additional services requested on the day, i.e. confirmatory testing on Drug screen results * Follow up information may be required, i.e. GP or Specialist letters/reports provided for additional information regarding a medical condition/s * Unable to complete all of the services on the day, i.e. build-up of earwax WHY CAN WE ONLY GET THE FIT SLIP, NOT THE FULL RESULTS? The most common reason for issuing the fit slip is to protect your privacy or as directed by legislative or regulatory guidelines such as Drivers or Rail Medicals. CAN I ACCESS MY MEDICAL RECORD? Patients and Candidates In accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 – any person who has a medical record held by Sonic HealthPlus is entitled to request access to their medical record. Once the request has been received, it will be actioned accordingly. WHO CAN VIEW MY MEDICAL RECORD? Patients No other person can access your record without valid consent. The only time your information will be accessed without your consent, is if we are legislatively compelled to do so. Candidates Clinical and administrative staff will have access to your information in the capacity of their relevant jobs. No other person can access your information without your consent. When you initially present for your medical, you will be asked to complete a Privacy and Consent Form. Please note, information about your assessment results and progress may be given to relevant other service providers and third parties, who are involved in your management. These may include your personal doctor (if not a SHP GP), specialists, insurers or your employers (referring employers/potential employers). Consent may be withdrawn at any time. The only time your information will be accessed without your consent, is if we are legislatively compelled to do so. CAN I CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE CONFIRMATORY TESTING ON A NON-NEGATIVE DRUG TEST? No, in order for a drug testing result to be legally defensible in an industrial court the current Australian Standard AS/NZS4308:2008 must be complied with. According to this standard all samples with a non-negative result MUST be subjected to confirmatory testing, at this point you will be provided with an interim report stating only that the sample was non-negative and confirmatory testing is underway. SHP is also NATA accredited for compliance with this standard which gives you confidence that the result you receive from SHP is robust and will stand up in an industrial court. WHY CAN’T WE BE TOLD WHAT SUBSTANCE THE INITIAL TEST IS NON NEGATIVE FOR? We conduct our drug screening and provide results in line with the current Australian standard AS/NZS4308:2008, this protects both you the client and also the candidate in the following ways: This standard does not allow the testing company to disclose the nature of an unconfirmed “Non-Negative” drug screening result to the employer. In doing so we would breach confidentiality and our NATA accreditation requirement that require us to comply with this standard. If we were to release these unconfirmed results, an employer may make assumptions based on certain metabolites in a candidate’s sample which may turn out to be unfounded or may inadvertently reveal medications taken, illnesses or conditions that will not affect work performance but may cause discrimination or innuendo.
